things in my dark academic room
This isn't meant as a 'suggestion' list (but feel free to take it as such if you'd like). These are just things I do because it makes me feel more confident and put-together!
•─•°•❀•°•─•
Waterfall lights hanging over a blood-red curtain, to give late-night studying a more fantasy-novel dorm room feel
Old mason jars filled with crystals and sea glass from adventures long past. Tall jars stocked with fancy pens and stained paintbrushes
Candles. An unnerving number of candles.
A sizable chunk of smoky quartz, gifted to me from a friend whom I helped pass Statistics
Small, delicate angel statuettes. When I was a little boy, my grandmother put them around my room for protection.
Stacks of books (quite obviously), but especially the stack of battered, thrifted ecology and wildlife identification books I've collected over the years (since long before my decision to study the natural sciences)
A four-generation family photograph, taken with relatives I barely got a chance to know
Several ornate wooden lockboxes, protecting anything I hold dear to me

the fact that i'm no longer the same age as the protagonists of novels and films i once connected to is so heartbreaking. there was a time when I looked forward to turning their age. i did. and i also outgrew them. i continue to age, but they don't; never will. the immortality of fiction is beautiful, but cruel.

dark academia on a poor university student budget
Because tuition is expensive and my job doesn't pay much.
•─•°•❀•°•─•
Letter-writing. Decorate the margins with simple doodles that you know they'd appreciate. Find your own, distinctive sign-off. (You can also do this online by customising emails, Google Docs links, etc.)
Libraries. Campus libraries and their hum of student chatter. Once they begin to get too loud for your liking, visit a public library and study amongst the towering shelves.
Thrifting. Slowly phase old porcelain tableware into your kitchen. Walk to class in a gently-battered long coat. Thumb through copies of classics with worn corners and an old love note on the inside cover. Especially if you find an ornate teacup or mug that you can keep at your study space to be completely yours.
Make it yourself. Press flowers between heavy books and use them as decoration in your journal or sketchbook. Cut up some scrap paper and make bookmarks with your favourite book quotes.
Explore. Wander around public parks in your favourite pullover or blazer, taking photos or sketching whatever it is that catches your interest. Investigate back corridors and secret passages on your campus.
Read all those books in your TBR. (I know you have a lot on there.)
Journal, write, sketch, paint, compose... indulge in whatever creative respite you choose. Create.

When you thought that reading The Secret History would fill that empty hole inside of yourself that no book has ever and instead it burns a larger void called: a morbid longing for the picturesque at all costs.

‘nfwmb’ by hozier except he’s a siren singing out to you beyond the crashing waves in the dead of night, drawing you in until you eventually dive underwater and dissolve into the ocean. (headphones recommended) (youtube)

Hot take.
In the Homeric world, as a hero (e.g. Achilles Odysseus), you gain HONOUR during life, and after you die, you gain the GLORY, which will offer you immortality through songs that start getting written in your name. Basically, you remain in the memory of everyone, and this is the way you become immortal!
Henry was so in love with Homer and the Homeric idea of GLORY, that he tried turning himself into a Homeric hero. He wanted to become immortal, and through his "action" from the end of the book (trying to not spoil it), he thought that he'd be a saviour, a hero, saving others by sacrificing himself. Therefore, becoming immortal according to the Homeric laws.

Punk Academia, in my opinion.
Studying either at home with music blasting or at the public library, very quietly.
Possibly drinking a pepsi or something, whatever you got from a vending machine.
Whatcha reading? Books on anarchy, or maybe history, political movements, social studies -- anything that opens your horizons and educates you.
Hell, maybe you're even studying the history of punk rock? Getting familiar with its core philosophies?
Or, you know, you could also be reading a fiction book or a zine.
Taking notes on your notebook with a pencil.
The notebook is filled with poems and lyrics you've created or you've liked from other places.
Written rambling on whatever you read, something that might go up on your blog, or your zine if you have one.
Doodles, designs and stickers all over that notebook and the notebook cover too.
You're dressed however the fuck you want??? As you should??
Your hair is also however you want, casual, mundane, crazy as fuck, who cares.
Finding ways to help your community and those in need, that seems very punk academia.
Discussing what you learned with others.
Educating people who aren't in your scene, too.
Or, hell, talking to yourself about it while you work on a patch.

dark academia / winter
• waking up in your warm bed, seeing the condensation on your windows & looking out to see all the snow that fell down during the night
• wearing your softest slippers to go get the post in the morning & noticing the thin layer of ice on the pavement faintly cracking at each step all the way to the mailbox where you pick up the newspaper that still smells of fresh ink
• making a big cup of ginger tea, wrapping yourself up in a thick blanket & reading prose in the soft armchair by the fireplace
• listening to j. s. bach’s oratorios while practising chess – you don’t quite know how to play yet, but you are determined to learn
• the fire crackling softly in the library as you are working, black ink sliding feverishly on thick, cream paper, to finish your very last essay before the holidays
• the cold, sharp air hitting your nose when you step out of the door & the smell of fresh snow all around you
• draping a long, warm scarf around your neck one more time as you look up to see delicate, light-as-feather snowflakes falling from the bright blue sky
• ice-skating on a frozen lake in the woods & taking breaks to drink warm cocoa, holding the warm cup in both hands to warm up your fingers
• feeling the little tingling on your cold cheeks as you get back inside, wearing your warmest wool jumper & putting up fairy lights
• drinking mulled wine out of an old russian tea glass & feeling the warm liquid make its way to your stomach as you are reading poetry about the darkness of winter out loud with your closest friends

dark academia / winter capsule wardrobe
tops
• a black turtleneck. preferably cotton or cashmere.
• a white collared shirt. silk, cotton or linen.
• a dressier top. something to wear with jeans when having poetry nights with your friends; i would still advise to go for black, but the style can be more extravagant – puff sleeves, maybe?
• a basic long-sleeved t-shirt. choose a dark, muted colour or go for black.
• an oversized knit. white, grey or black; wool is best at keeping you warm.
• basic knit. possibly black; doesn’t have to be boring in style – could be a wrap cardigan, a turtle or mock-neck, balloon-sleeved…
bottoms
• a pair of black straight-leg jeans. stick to 100% cotton.
• a pair of black or dark grey trousers. wool or cotton is good.
• a black skirt. mini or midi; wool is, again, great for winter, but anything will do.
dresses
• a long-sleeved little black dress. pick a style you like, be it frilly or clean cut.
• a dark knit dress. just try to stay away from acrylic & polyester, they won’t keep you warm.
underwear
• a few pairs of bras. go for neutral colours & comfort.
• enough underpants. black or baby pink lace is always nice; cotton is good.
• different types of socks. black & white, thick & thin; make sure your ankles are covered.
• black tights. they keep your legs warm when you wear a skirt or a dress.
jewellery
choose gold or silver, whichever suits you best, & stick to it.
• two dainty necklaces. you can wear them on their own of stacked together.
• a few rings. one bigger & more interesting, the rest more minimal to complement the more intriguing piece.
• a pair of everyday earrings & a more elegant pair. if you wear earrings; make sure both pairs fit your other jewellery.
accessories
• an over-the-shoulder leather bag. black or brown; it should fit your school papers & at least a few extra books.
• a small bag for special occasions. whatever style you like; it should go together with your little black dress & fit at least a lipstick & everything you might need at a party – a tiny bottle of vodka & a small notebook?
• a black or checkered (but dark in colour) umbrella. for those beautifully gloomy, rainy days.
• a leather belt. black or brown, depending on the colour of your bag & shoes.
• a scrunchie. black velvet or white satin.
shoes
• a pair of black or brown boots. either a chelsea boot or a dr. martens type shoe; these should be the same colour as your everyday bag.
• a menswear-inspired shoe. should match your bag; oxfords, brogues, derbys…
• occasion footwear. type depends on your style; could be heeled ankle boots, pumps, ankle-strap heels, loafers, ballerinas or even the same derby shoes from the previous point.
outerwear
• a long woollen coat. preferably black; could also be a checkered dark grey.
• a tweed jacket or checkered blazer. in grey or brown tones; could be worn under the oversized coat for added warmth.
• a pair of mittens. in a dark colour; maybe a friend or a lover knitted them for you?
• a big long scarf. matches the mittens; favour natural materials for warmth.

illegible handwriting, coffee rings on notebooks, putting gloves on only to take them off again, dark lipstick, walking to class when it's not raining enough for an umbrella but just enough to fog up your glasses, stone buildings, latin poetry, pen smudges, waking up while its still dark outside, cinnamon, cold noses, swaying trees, half moons, cuffed sleeves, silence

As much as I love studying Psychology, my intrusive thoughts are telling me to learn Italian & then study art history in Florence instead. I love this city so much~

Do not fall in love with people like me. I will take you to museums, and parks and monuments, and kiss you in every beautiful place, so that you can never go back to them without tasting me like blood in your mouth. I will destroy you in the most beautiful way possible. And when I leave, you will finally understand, why storms are named after people.

> random things that bring me peace🗝️
birds chirping at dawn
the gentle crack of opening a new book
dusting my bookshelf
buying a fresh bouquet of flowers
the soft sizzle of butter as the pancake batter hits the pan
writing love letters to the unknown
stroking my cat
old people smiling at me
“I’m proud of you”
the crackle of fire
Cat purrs
a throaty chuckle
coming across a relatable poem
The sound of rain against a window
Thunder and lightning
