After all the unfair hardships in his life, if anyone tells me that Dean Winchester deserves anything other than a happy ending, I'm not interested in listening. And I'm not interested in letting anything take him and his story from me (especially not one hack of a "writers' room" that hated Dean all along). So, as far as I'm concerned, the show ended with them driving off into the sunset, to watch the stars together one more time, and then Dean finally gets to go out on his own, finally free of all the burdens and responsibilities that have been forced upon him all his life, and he gets to build a life for himself, based on what he wants. He gets a job, where he still helps people but doesn't have to look over his shoulder every minute. He gets safety and stability, and maybe even a white picket fence. His wife isn't blurry because he actually loves her, and he finally has a family and children because he chose to, because after a lifetime of being forced to raise other people's children, he deserves that. And he gets to be happy about the little things in life without anyone judging him, but there's also big things to be happy about now, because it isn't all doom and gloom. And he's free and he's happy, and it's finally what he deserves 💖

Because he deserved to have his mother and she deserved to be there for her children, and neither got it. Because she didn't deserve the absolute slaughter of her character that the resurrection arc committed and he didn't deserve to be vilified for being the only person around acting like a human being and having completely logical feelings. Because when she got brutally murdered a second time, which neither she nor he deserved, he deserved to be able to grieve and to hold the people who murdered her responsible, without being defamed and called evil, and without having to ask for their forgiveness. He deserved to be able to demand justice, instead of having to be vilified and slandered, without having to care about their feelings being hurt more than his mother getting killed, obliterated. Because they both deserve better than this story (that is, the later seasons) gave them. And because I can never listen to this song without thinking of everything Dean went through and feeling angsty.

I couldn't possibly tell you what this song really means, but here and now, to me, it's an anthem of perseverance, and it feels so very Dean. And that's what I choose to believe in, that somewhere out there, Dean finally, finally put himself first, as hard as it was for him. And now he's off on a new adventure, finally with a career that he wanted, safe and happy, meeting a woman who'd put him first, and building a home and a family of his own. That's all I've ever wanted for him, and a life of his own is what he deserves (doesn't mean I won't still be crying about the finale that shall not be named, periodically, but, hey, that's called balance) ❣
