Junebug
Writhing on my bathroom floor
The cat and I both stare
Wondering about you
Wondering different things.
I wonder if I can help you,
Perhaps
You have simply fallen over
Trapped by the smooth slickness of the floor, and of your own body.
But no
Each time
I flip you upright
You flip back over, the legs
That were your own, once
That should have helped you
Twisted and gnarled
Betraying you
Making you go
Belly-up.
Around you is a dark brown stain-
Your own blood. I know that now.
There is only one thing left now, that I can do to help you
I don’t want to do it
But I won’t leave you there
To die
Slowly.
Instead, I help you
To die
Quickly.
I hope it is better for you,
As I wrap your body in paper meant to be thrown away
And crush you swiftly,
with something smooth and flat,
So no part of you is left
So I don’t miss and cause you greater pain
Before you go.
I don’t look at your body
And I give you no funeral
But this poem.
You are discarded with the paper, as if you are trash
But you aren’t.
You were alive
I am sorry.

TW: Domestic animal, Domestic mammal
TW: Cat
Always the saddest when I have to post one of these. Got an alert about this on nextdoor. Went to check because I am missing a cat. Not mine, so I just moved them out of the road. Wanted them to stay visible in case other owners searching. Can't take to check for chips since its the middle of the night. Hope someone does in the morning. Put leaf and branch under their paw so that the cat and bystanders will know someone cared.
Personal vent: When I asked what to do with the body, meaning should we take to freeze to check for a chip in the morning or leave visible for search or make hidden to prevent traumatizing ppl (but still findable) and they said 'theres a trash can right there'.... literally thats worse than leaving it in the road no one would be able to find that, and to disrespect any creatures body especially a domestic cat in that way to just consider it TRASH... So, so, so deeply against my moral code and my spirituality that i dont know that our relationship can continue.

How Many People Like Dead Things?
How do you quantify them?
I'm finishing a book proposal for a book about carcasses. My agent wants me to quantify how many people are interested in dead things. How do I quantify that?
Can you tell me:
The Facebook Groups for vultures that have the highest membership rates?
Any other social media I should consider to put in the pitch (to convince publishers that there are a lot of us?
Any other ways I could quantify that?
I could quantify the number of hunters, morticians, taxidermists, farmers in the US....who else is part of a group I might be able to get numbers on, who would want to read a book about carcasses?

⚠️ Domestic animal warning ⚠️
June 18 2022. Domestic cat. Found in road, likely car strike. Moved to feild, given flowers. Would have liked to situate it nicer but had to go to work. Same streatch of road as kitten was found on.
Keep your cats indoors.
---
Edit: I regret not taking this and other carstrike cats to the vet to check for microchips. Having an escaped indoor cat we never found, I am terrified he has died and was disposed of without anyone realizing there was people to call and notify. Not knowing is worse than anything. If you find a dead cat, do better than me. Take it to a vet.

Sep 10 2021. Monarch butterfly. I was going to bring it home but i read some stuff about vulture culture hurting the enviornment by taking nutrients away so i decided to put it back and just preserve it here.
