As likely mentioned before, this journal has been an indispensable tool for taking stock of how my approach and focus has changed over the years of drawing folks. Sure, you’re bound to get a different line quality depending if you’re riding a train or a bus (potholes are way more difficult to predict 😅), but overall this sketchbook’s been a great teacher, reminding me of where and how to focus my attention.

I’m now averaging about a page per month on this sketchbook journey, which is already significantly more portraits than I was putting down at the end of last year.
More often than not it feels like I’m starting from the ground up. I’m trying to tell myself that the actuality is that I’m building a heck of a sturdy foundation. 🙃

For me, the younger crowd has always been more difficult to draw, since they usually aren’t inclined to sitting still lol. But, I could stand to be humbled now and then anyway, so I endeavor to keep drawing *everyone*, all ages included.

Got my first compliment on the bus today. A kid said he liked my faces, just as I made a very gnarly mistake drawing an ear (not shown here, just trust me lol). Very unexpected, but was a nice boost for morale nonetheless.

There’s been a LOT happening in my neck of the woods as far as life updates go, some things ever so wonderful, some things requiring substantial perseverance. So art and updates have been, and will continue to be, a bit slow-going as “it all gets figured out™️” for now.
Which means I’m all the more excited to share new finished projects with y’all!
Last summer, I had the honor of having this piece exhibited in a group show in Hartlepool, UK, during the Northern Illustration Festival, which thematically coincided with the Tall Ships Races event, for where Hartlepool was a participating destination! It was very exciting and surreal to be apart of these events in even such a small way (internationally! 😵), and was quite inspired by the other artists’ work I got to share the space with.
This piece will be available to order as prints later this week (I’ll throw the bat signal up when it’s ready!).

Ran two and a half blocks to catch my bus, only to have it drive right past my stop as I arrived. Bummer!
But then, the bus pulled over down the road, and I finished my eighth mile sprint through its doors.
Was too elated and wayyy out of breath to jot down any faces that night, but here’s what I got the rest of the week.
