Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1

The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.

So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.

So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.

Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.

And the probe is working again.

From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

And when everything in your life requires work, your balance goes out the window.

Being a young adult is so strange. You enter a coffee shop. The 20 year old girl waiting behind you cried all night because she just came to a new city for university and she feels so alone. That 27 year old guy over there works a job he is overqualified for, he lives with his parents and wants to move out but doesn't know what to do about it. That one 24 year old dude already has a car, a house, and a job waiting for him once he graduates thanks to his dad's connections. The 26 year old barista couldn't complete his higher education because he has to work and take care of his family. The 28 year old girl sitting next to you has no friends to go out with so she is texting her mother. That couple (both 25 years old) are married and the girl is pregnant. I was raised without the knowledge of cars and general machinery that my younger brother was because it's "dirty, hard work and car garages aren't the right place for girls" and "petrol flows in the veins of the men throughout our family line". I wanted to be a heavy machinery mechanic but I was pushed into teaching; now I'm 37k in debt from a college degree in teaching and working in a factory with forklifts and trucks. I agree, this form of sexism in particular needs to stop.

this "passanger princess" shit bothers me so much because i'm a motorsport fan and i want to see more female drivers!!! i am tired of seeing male drivers whose sons also become drivers, but their daughters don't. it's clear that girls don't receive any incentive to be interested in cars and this "i can't drive i'm just a girl" bs doesn't help.
