Liszt - Funérailles
The most famous piece from his suite Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, this work is an almost impressionistic tombeau for Liszt’s friends who had died in the Hungarian Uprising of 1848. However, many accidentally assume it is an elegy for Chopin who passed away in 1849, because a the “military march” segment around halfway through has a left hand ostinato that resembles a passage of Chopin’s “Heroic” Polonaise. The work here is gloomy, opening with dissonant funeral bells, and haunting “war trumpet calls”. While there is a contrasting passionate melody that becomes even more grandiose in a restatement, the work never leaves the bleakness of war and death. I usually reserve this piece for autumn time because, as cliche as it sounds, it seems much more fitting then. But I had an itch to hear it again today.
