Pro Tips for Nomadic Workers
I’ve had the chance to take meetings and TCB remotely around New York City this past month, often for just short bursts of time or half days. For two occasions, I used “official” co-working spaces - The Yard near Penn Station and The Farm in Soho. Both were friendly and utilitarian in their own ways, had reasonable day rates, and I’d use them again.
That being said, sometimes you don’t want to spend the money, or a workspace is just needed for a quick “get off the noisy street” phone call etc.
This post is going to be a living document of useful, free or cheap spaces in NYC and beyond that serve such a purpose. Please message me if you have some of your own.
Location #1
Starbucks 40th between 5th and madison
Tumblr media
This nearly hidden Starbucks is a perfect blend of spaciousness, nicely arranged seating, plenty of plugs, not too crowded, wifi & bathrooms, near transit options etc. Its so hard to find a coffee shop that’s not super crowded or small, this place is a gem. Only share this valuable info with trusted friends!
Location #2
Convene: 101 Greenwich / 2 Rector
Tumblr media
Convene is a cool looking co-working space in the financial district, near a few train lines. I was in the area and desperate for a quiet place to take a call, and BAM - right around the corner was this amazing lobby nook with a couch, two chairs, some benches, a book case - it’s like a free to use living room without having to pay to go upstairs. That’s how I used it anyhow. Your mileage may vary if you wanted to camp there for any period of time, but it was perfect for a quick 30 minutes.
Location #3
Wasabi Sushi & Bento Penn Station
Tumblr media
On the lower level of Penn (right next to the big Starbucks) is a well designed space to sit, with table-height plugs. Outside of mealtime rushes, this is a great place to work or kill time before a train. Nowhere near as crazy as the Starbucks, super clean and the food and drink options look good. Seems to have a bathroom, wifi is unknown, but you may be able to piggyback off of Starbucks.

Desks I admire #1
Tumblr media
My grandfather had somewhere around four different art studios scattered throughout his home. Some of the rooms were more library-like, one seemed reserved for napping-thinking and others were more utilitarian, to get the art done.
This office looks like a great place to quietly think, read and get writing done. It’s comforting that the books are there if you need them, but visually, they are out of range.
The plant and window really make this space come alive though.

The Goal Here
I’m reviving this blog in an effort to have some sort of centralized creative outlet for myself other than the big social platforms (which are always stealing away good stuff into their void).
I aim to bring some of the free spirited, raw nature of classic personal blogging back as well as offering an interestingly-curated selection of the world.
Lastly, this blog will be as simple and clean as possible, since the internet at large is trending towards a garbage heap aesthetic of ads and pop overs and whatever those things are at the bottom of every web site these days.

The Power of Being Idle
Conscious mind wandering is most definitely a 21st century skill.
in an article in the Annual Review of Psychology, Schooler and psychology professor Jonathan Smallwood found that when people learn a challenging task, they do better if they work first on an easy task that promotes mind-wandering, and then go back to the more difficult one. The idea is to balance linear thinking—which requires intense focus—with creative thinking, which is borne out of idleness. Switching between the two modes seems to be the optimal way to do good, inventive work.
Happiness research shows the biggest obstacle to creativity is being too busy

Everyone is grabbing as much data as possible with very little attention on what is actually necessary for the services being provided. Most companies shouldn’t by design be collecting data unless it’s necessary for their service. Also, no one is auditing the data, and a lot of if is crap. Only a few companies have the really good big data.

Not sure where I stand on this but will entertain the idea.
