A fool gives full vent to his spirit, But a wise man quietly holds it back.” Proverbs 29:11 The question of how to deal with anger in a biblical way is an important one. But it’s certainly not the cookie-cutter answer many of us have heard. Have you ever had a moment where you said something in red-hot anger? Only to ask yourself moments later: “How could I say that?” Sadly, I’ve had far too many of these moments. And today’s devotional verse calls me out as acting like a “fool” who let anger control my words and actions. However, I don’t think the heart of this passage is to simply suppress anger or other negative emotions. It’s not about pretending anger isn’t there. After all, psychologically speaking, shoving emotions aside doesn’t make them go away. Instead, it creates a tangled pile that will surface and need dealt with later. So, what does the Bible teach us? Jesus has some pretty tough words against acting in anger. He taught that everyone who is angry with his brother is liable to the same kind of judgment as a murderer (Matthew 5:20–21). And yet, he also chased predatory business people out of the synagogue with a whip (Matthew 21:12)! There are ways ways to deal with anger biblically: Ask for the Holy Spirit to increase the fruit of the Spirit in your life (Galatians 5:22–23). When we’re angry, it’s actually the quickest path to being pruned and prepared for incredible growth. And understand that we absolutely need the Holy Spirit’s power to mature us here! Address the anger head on by making peace with the person or situation you’re angry with. Jesus teaches us that conflict is actually the path to peace (Matthew 18:15–17; Matthew 5:23–24). Lashing out and attacking is not the way Christians do conflict. But avoiding it altogether and seething in anger is unbiblical as well. Ask if your anger is righteous and justified—which is sometimes the case. And if so, does it require action? Is there evil or injustice to confront? Someone who is weak to defend? If so, act! But don’t do so to give “vent to your spirit” just to make yourself feel better. Shalom. https://www.instagram.com/p/CoUTYViry1U/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” 1 John 2:15–17 What is the spiritual state of your life? If you desire the things of the world, here are three things you’ll find dominating your heart: Desires of the flesh: sinful cravings characterized by lust. Desires of the eyes: sinful cravings characterized by greed, envy, and coveting. The pride of life: sinful cravings for the approval of man, fame above all else, and one’s own glory. We can ask the Holy Spirit to scour them out. To banish and starve them. To do this, we learn that he doesn’t simply remove things like this… He progressively replaces them with the “love of the Father.” God doesn’t leave a void in our hearts—he fills them with himself! God is eternal, the things of this world are “passing away.” Love what is eternal above everything else; and that is God himself. Ask the Holy Spirit to examine your heart today and show you places you have fallen in love with world. Specifically, where are the desires of the flesh, of the eyes, and the pride of life living within you? Now, let those areas be exchanged for the love of the Father. Give it a try, you’ll be happy that you did! (at Las Vegas, Nevada) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl3CQSlOYG5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The church at Philippi was the first one Paul planted in Europe (Acts 16:6–40). He was their first pastor, and had huge a huge impact on their lives. They loved him, and he loved them. They were also deeply worried about him. Why? He was in prison in Rome, and likely had the penalty of execution looming. Imagine if your first pastor or spiritual parent was imprisoned and facing death…It would be heart wrenching, wouldn’t it? It would, and yet, even facing death, Paul assures them his imprisonment is actually a good thing! Because his persecution is advancing the Gospel (Philippians 1:12) in more ways than he can count. Today is an invitation for us to live like Paul. So often, I’ve realized my life turns into a pursuit of maximizing my personal comfort. Paul’s life wasn’t about comfort. His “great expectation” was that Jesus would be glorified in his body either by his life or his death. For Paul, success in living or in dying was measured by this: did I pursue Jesus' glory above all else? Now, ready for a hard question? If your life was a movie, what statement would best describe the plot? “For me, to live is Christ,” or, “For me, to live is comfort”? Comfort is an idol that wriggles its way into the smallest nooks and crannies in our lives, until it becomes a groundswell that takes over every waking breath. To truly live is not to be maximally comfortable. To truly live is to seek and savor Jesus above everything else this world has to offer. It is only in Jesus that eternal life is found. Remember Peter and the disciples in John 6? Jesus had just fed the multitudes with five loaves of bread and two fish. But afterwards, he said some hard things that the people didn’t like, so they left him. Jesus asked the Twelve: “Do you want to go away as well?” Peter answered: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” Paul believed “to live is Christ,” because like the Disciples, he knew eternal life is found in Christ alone. Will you pursue comfort or Christ, today? https://www.instagram.com/p/ClqcGjTr3m7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Almighty Father, I am grateful for this wonderful gift of life with which you have blessed me. It is ripe with chances and choices I can make, the many things I can learn, the awe-inspiring sights I can see, the delightful sounds I can hear and the different people I can meet. There are many beautiful things in this life you have given to me, along with its many paths I can travel. I am alive with the will to think and act, and I thank you for such blessings. In the busy-ness of my day, I sometimes forget to stop to thank you for all that is good in my life. My blessings are many and my heart is filled with gratitude for the gift of living, for the ability to love and be loved, for the opportunity to see the everyday wonders of creation, for sleep, food, and water, and for a mind that thinks and a body that feels. Amen. https://www.instagram.com/p/ClYLGwFOOkw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Fellow Citizens, We all know America is divided in half politically. Our problem is not really a political one. It’s a heart issue. Until we develop empathy for one another, we will become increasingly weak as a nation. As Lincoln said, “United we stand, divided we fall.” Our international enemies love to see us squabble. Try this: listen carefully to your opponent’s argument. Imagine you are them. Ask yourself if you can see why they believe what they do. If you can make that leap, say this: “I can see why you believe that. I disagree but I do support your right to voice your opinion.” Be the bigger person. Take a step toward mutual understanding. We need this if our country is to survive and thrive. Respectfully yours, Dale Davidson https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck8AUVZrvqf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A few things to keep clear in the upcoming elections: 1. Congress had nothing to do with the overturning of Roe v. Wade. That is the US Supreme Court. 2. National races (US Senate, US House) have little to do with controlling crime. That is up to your city police department or county sheriff’s department. The elected officials closest to those issues are city council, county commissioners and the mayor’s office. The state legislature has some say in the laws regarding crime and budgets of law enforcement agencies. 3. Your federal taxes are set by laws passed by the US Congress. Looking closely at the votes of your representatives and senators is wise. Their votes on spending bills are also important. Government spending causes inflation. Don’t be fooled by political commercials that have no basis in fact and are trying to manipulate you emotionally. Voting takes research and careful thought. https://www.instagram.com/p/CkchyixrVHz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Beneath this snappy hat is a gash with 18 stitches holding my head together. The tumble down the stairs wasn’t so bad, it was the sudden stop against a chest full of books which my head moved 2 feet. To those who say that I’m hardheaded, I concede. On the plus side, I’m halfway there on my Frankenstein Halloween costume. My wife’s advice for all: the stair railing is there for a reason! https://www.instagram.com/p/CkFX289rlfx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

TO CLICK OR TO PRAY? THAT IS THE QUESTION. “Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him.” Psalm 4:3 It’s easy to forget how God works in this world. One kind of distraction that blinds us most easily is an earthly formed solution. Businesses are spending big advertising money to give us earthly solutions: 5 Ways to Make Your Business Profitable 7 Tips for Getting Out of Debt 9 Sage Proverbs for Getting Over Your Bad Relationship What to Do When You’re Diagnosed: The Definitive Guide Why pray when you can just click? Of course, there is nothing wrong with being industrious and diligent to resolve our earthly problems. Jesus commands us to do as much: “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves” (Matt. 10:16). Prayer is casting ourselves on the mercies of God, trusting that even his painful “Yes” and “No” is according to “Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Cor. 1:24). Theologian William Temple once said, “When I pray, coincidences happen.” We do not live in a closed, materialistic universe that only moves when we move. We live in God’s world. Therefore, let’s be diligent in work. Let’s be wise in our preparation. Let’s be industrious with our life hacks. But when the breakup happens, when the pink slip comes, and when the diagnosis is given, “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful” (Col. 4:2). Be diligent in prayer. God works in this world beyond our machinations. And he not only works—“all things work together for good to those who love God” (Romans 8:28). God is industrious on our behalf. He is working his way toward us. He wants to be in a close relationship with each of us if we would only pray. What’s the best place to start? Start a prayer journal. This will enable you to keep track of your prayers each day so that you don’t lose sight of God’s faithfulness in the long term. Start a prayer meeting. This will get you outside your own head. When suffering ensues, don’t forget—pray. You might not know what will happen. But you do know one thing for sure…God will act! https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj2Mwb6u8RQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” Ezekiel 36:26 NIV When God saves us, he exchanges a “heart of flesh” for our “heart of stone.” Instead of dying, we live. When you think about it, it’s a lot like an organ transplant. This happens when a sick person with a non-functioning organ gets a new one to replace it. Everything from hearts to kidneys to corneas get transplanted. It’s a medical miracle that saves thousands each year. But, it’s not without its risks. A big complication is called transplant rejection. This happens when the recipient’s body sees the new organ as a foreign invader. Ironically, the old tissue attacks the very thing meant to bring it life. When God saves us, the “old man” — as Paul so often calls it — rebels against this life-saving transplant, too. Where has the “old man” been getting the upper hand? In Colossians 3:5, Paul calls this what is “earthly” in us, saying: “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.” Submit these areas to God right now by first confessing them. As David said in Psalm 51:4, “Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight…” When we specifically confess our sin, we put a target on it. This is the first step to putting it to death. This year, what sin do you need to confess and kill? As John Owen famously said, “Be killing sin or sin will be killing you.” Don’t let your spiritual organ transplant get rejected! “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1 The “Word” John writes about is three things: Eternal; A distinct personality who is God’s companion; God himself. Later in John 1, we discover that this “Word” also “became flesh and dwelt among us…the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). This Word is none other than Jesus himself. But isn’t that a funny way to introduce Jesus, as the “Word”? Why would God be described this way? There are many ways to answer this question, but one of the most straightforward is this: Jesus is the most perfect communication of who God is, what he cares about, and what his mission is in the world. So if we want to know what God is like and who he is, we go to the Gospels and look at Jesus. Everything he said and did was exactly what the Father wanted him to say and do. His compassion, his brilliance, his backbone, his miracles, his heartache… Everything perfectly communicates the heart and personality of God. Through Jesus, we can know exactly who God is. How Jesus Answers, “What Is God Like?” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?” John 14:9 When we look at Jesus, we see the clearest picture of who God is. When we listen to Jesus, we’re hearing God’s words from the Word himself. “When we believe in Jesus, we’re trusting in God. If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” John 14:15 When we obey Jesus, we’re loving God. So, what is God like? 1. To look at Jesus is to look at God. 2. To listen to Jesus is to listen to God. 3. To believe in Jesus is to believe in God. 4. To obey Jesus is to love God. Today, read one story about Jesus in Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John and identify which one of the four things that are listed above that Jesus is revealing to you about God. Please have a safe and blessed week. (at Las Vegas, Nevada) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjSEpqPOK3L/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
