Here's how to create an ergonomic workstation for studying
New Post has been published on https://dailysmalljobs.com/heres-how-to-create-an-ergonomic-workstation-for-studying/
Here's how to create an ergonomic workstation for studying
Although we usually don’t realize it, our body is under a lot of stress when we don’t sit properly. This is especially true for those who sit for long periods of time such as students and office workers.
A recent study reinforces the idea that bad posture while sitting has a bad effect on our musculoskeletal system. Among the consequences of bad posture habits, we can experience pain in various parts of the body, including the neck, shoulders, middle back and lower back. Poor posture is also often associated with headaches and digestive problems.
The way we sit can also greatly affect our mental well-being. In a study published by Dr todayPsychologists at the University of San Francisco found that, while sitting slouched, slouching stimulated negative thoughts, sitting upright prompted positive memories and thoughts.
This article will introduce the ergonomic workstation, explain its benefits and explain how to easily set it up.
What is an Ergonomic Workstation?
Ergonomics refers to the science of designing things and environments to maximize human comfort, health and overall well-being. Create an ergonomic workstation Means setting up your desk, chairs, and other items that enhance usability, prevent injuries, and promote a healthy posture. The right setup for an ergonomic workstation can vary from person to person based on individual characteristics, activities and needs.
What are the benefits of an ergonomic workstation?
There are many ways an ergonomic workstation can improve your life. The most obvious benefit is the reduced risk of developing musculoskeletal problems and experiencing nagging pain in various parts of your body.
Studies also show how ergonomic systems can significantly reduce the risk of injury and cardiovascular disease. They can reduce muscle tension levels, improve the feeling of relaxation, and consequently, your concentration and the quality of your work or study.
By taking simple measures, students can see noticeable improvements in both their physical and psychological health.
What are the steps to set up an ergonomic workstation?
Here’s a simple step-by-step guide on how to easily create an ergonomic workstation.
#1 Adjust your chair ergonomically
Use your chair’s adjustments to set the angle, depth, and armrests so that you perceive it as comfortable. Keep your wrists straight and your elbows parallel to the floor while hanging with your upper arms in a vertical alignment.
The height of your chair should be set so that you can keep your feet flat on the ground.
#2 Place your monitor the right distance from your face
The distance between your face and the monitor should not be less than 20 inches (about 50 cm) and 40 inches (about 100 cm). Using a flat monitor can help you save space if you have a small desk. It is also important that your monitor is positioned in front of your eyes or at a very slight angle. Its contrast and brightness should be configured so as not to strain your eyes.
#3 Place your keyboard at the right height
Your keywords should be positioned so that your upper arms hang vertically and do not require bending your arms too much from a horizontal position. Consider using a keyboard tray, which can give you more flexibility to adjust its angle and position.
#4 Position the mouse correctly
Arrange things so that you cover as little distance as possible when moving your hands between your mouse and keyboard. This is especially important if you are trying to reduce your risk of experiencing wrist pain. It’s also good practice to use a mouse that fits your hand size Ergonomic mouse pad This allows your wrists to rest and reduces stress on your arms and shoulders.
#5 Keep other items within reach
Any other tools, equipment and things to keep on your desk should be within easy reach without too much effort. Avoid placing your pen, paper, printer, lamp or drink in a way that forces you to stretch or strain your muscles. It is a good practice to use a cable organizer to keep cables out of the way and keep your feet in a relaxed position.
In conclusion, poor posture while sitting can have a negative impact on both our physical and mental health. An ergonomic workstation is a solution to this problem, as it maximizes comfort, prevents injury and promotes a healthy posture. Benefits of an ergonomic workstation include a reduced risk of developing musculoskeletal problems and experiencing pain, as well as reducing the risk of injury and cardiovascular disease. Setting up an ergonomic workstation is easy and can be done by adjusting your chair, positioning your monitor and keyboard at the right height and distance, placing your mouse correctly, and making sure other items are within reach. Overall, creating an ergonomic workstation is an easy and effective way to improve your overall well-being.

Untold benefits of ASMR
In the endless pursuit of daily bread, and the routine activities that consume each day, many things cause our body pain and psychological stress.
Some of this comes from things beyond our control, usually external factors like our population, traffic, workload and the like. Others are things we make up right in our heads, like we stress about them before they happen. Tired yourself!
Searching for answers to questions is healthy, especially if you have a known source for qualified results. This article, like those looking for answers to potential questions, will highlight the untold benefits of ASMR, and if you should engage in it or not.
Whoah! Before that, if you have ever considered any reason to get involved in web development, Web designDigital marketing, and all its wonders SEO Serviceswatchtower – Web Design Agency Dubai A good name to save you stress.
What is ASMR?
ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. According to Wikipedia, ASMR is a tingling sensation that usually starts on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and up the spine.
It is a pleasant form of paresthesia; It has been compared to auditory-tactile synesthesia and may overlap with frisson.
ASMR is considered an imaginary state of “low-grade pleasure”, characterized by “a mixture of good feelings and a certain static-like tingling sensation on the skin”.
It is more often set off by specific auditory or visual stimuli than by deliberate attention control.
A series of ASMR-inducing videos have enjoyed more than 25 million uploads on YouTube by 2022. ASMR also dominates a category for live feeds on Twitch.
What does ASMR do to you?
Having better understood this term, it is only fair that I share with you how ASMR works and what it can do for you.
After triggers such as repetitive movements or talking, ASMR produces a tingling sensation in the head and neck. Most people say the sensation is incredibly soothing and very enjoyable.
The Journal of Experimental Brain Research published a new study in May 2022 that found participants’ heart rate and relaxation levels increased while watching an ASMR video.
Whether they felt the tingling or not, it was proven that people who had ASMR had reduced feelings of depression.
What Chemical Releases Are Associated with ASMR?
Although ASMR is considered by many to be a form of pseudoscience therapeutic Benefits, it’s proven to be worth it because the brain releases certain neurochemicals such as endorphins and oxytocin during ASMR.
These neurochemicals are what induce the deep sense of relaxation a listener experiences each time.
Is it possible to beat the buzz that ASMR provides?
Yes, you may lose the feeling of responding to the therapeutic tingling that comes with ASMR by default.
People who stop experiencing ASMR often attribute it to overindulgence, the result of watching too many triggering videos too quickly.
If you’ve lost it, you should take a month or two to reset your mind before engaging in another ASMR episode.
Does ASMR promote sleep?
People often ask if ASMR makes one sleepy, well, the answer is yes. Most ASMR users use this experience to help them fall asleep.
Previous studies have shown that bedtime was the single most common time to use ASMR, with 81% reporting that they used ASMR before bed.
Conclusion
ASMR is an interesting branch of science that has recently been embraced treatmentit is always found to provide a tingling sensation on the scalp and down the spine, sending light vibrations that release feel-good hormones and relax one.
ASMR has been identified to help people sleep better, release endorphins to calm nerves, and lower heart rate. This means that doing ASMR frequently ensures you have a lower heart risk than a routine.

Neural Networks as the Core of Deep Learning
New Post has been published on https://dailysmalljobs.com/neural-networks-as-the-core-of-deep-learning/
Neural Networks as the Core of Deep Learning
Complex computer science algorithms known as neural networks serve as the fundamental building blocks for artificial intelligence. This network is active Software developer and data scientists to automate speech recognition, image classification and other tasks on computers. More information is available on this cutting-edge aspect of computer and data science.
Neural Networks: What Are They?
Deep learning networks called neural networks, commonly known as artificial neural networks (ANN), are capable of teaching computers to imitate human reasoning.
Just as neurons in the human brain connect through dendrites and synapses, they rely on a network of nodes, layers, and connections. These are artificial network Can perform tasks significantly faster than human neural networks.
These tools often form the basis of time series analysis, chatbots, facial recognition and natural language processing software and apps In other words, they enable your computer to look, speak and hear like a human.
A summary of neural network history
The study of human neuroscience serves as the basis for the development and implementation of neural networks for computers.
Cognitive scientists Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts proposed the idea that it might be possible to create artificial neurons for computing systems that resemble biological neurons as early as 1943. The perceptron, the first network of its kind, was developed in 1958 by the psychologist Frank. Rosenblatt.
Since then, computer and data scientists have explored various methods to enhance the performance of artificial neural networks. The technical approach sometimes lags behind other deep learning techniques in popularity, although it has recently gained ground again.
4 types of neural networks
Artificial neural networks come in a wide range of different types, each with specific applications. Some examples of neural nets are as follows:
Convolutional neural networks are a particularly useful computational model for certain types of image recognition. Softwarean algorithm searches for real-time images fed through several convolutional layers the date to discover an exact match. As this process is repeated more frequently, the neural network becomes more sophisticated and elegant.
Feedforward neural networks are a smart alternative for nonlinear decision making due to their adaptability. These nets, sometimes referred to as multilevel perceptrons, employ numerous levels and thresholds in addition to sigmoid neurons. This multilayered machine learning approach contributes to both increased output speed and recognition specificity.
Perceptrons: First of all, these are straightforward neural networks. Machines still have access to nearly human-level intelligence thanks to basic architecture. A perceptron has one node, unlike other, more modern neural networks, which have more. In other words, it has some limitations in working with large datasets because its learning models are a bit too simple.
Recurrent Neural Systems: These deep neural networks, also called RNNs, are famous for their back-propagation efficiency. RNNs have the ability to feed both backward and forward information through their neural network using feedback loops and regression methods. It improves their ability to absorb new knowledge quickly.
Neural Networks: How Do They Work?
Artificial neurons fire just like human neurons. Check out the practical application of neural network architecture:
Data Addition: Large Data analysis This requires the computer to have access to a wide range of data. In a technique known as supervised learning, computer and data scientists feed their neural networks a ton of use cases as training data. After completion of these extensive introductory tutorials, neural networks can progress to additional unsupervised learning by interacting with regular users.
Allowing for different layers is important because each node in a neural network requires different types of input layers to simulate human reasoning. Each input in a deep learning algorithm has a certain weight, which determines whether a neuron will fire before moving on to the next level.
Applying input: Neural networks apply input by filtering each new data through several hidden layers. In order to more accurately identify the importance of each feature of the algorithm as a whole, they evaluate the features of the data and assign their numerical values.
Assigning weights: After classifying the inputs, the neural network processor assigns a weight value to each. This is the most important factor in determining whether the initial input will travel through the node to any number of hidden layers and ultimately trigger an output. Combining input values and weights results in a relatively small number of alternatives, all of which pass through different layers of the network.
Evaluation against threshold: The computer will apply a Activation function Product and sum of all inputs and weight values. This quantity acts as a threshold that ultimately determines which output levels an input will exceed. On this front, constant practice leads to neural optimization of pattern recognition.
A final word:
It is no longer news that our world is yielding fast Artificial intelligence (AI) is in nearly every field of human endeavor, and super-smart computers are driving this guard change. These computers rely on a complex scientific algorithm as the critical foundation for building a social system that is greatly simplified by AI.

Is aspiring to be a teacher a good idea today?
New Post has been published on https://dailysmalljobs.com/is-aspiring-to-be-a-teacher-a-good-idea-today/
Is aspiring to be a teacher a good idea today?
Teaching is a noble profession. No one would argue that these roles are not important.
However, teacher supply has dwindled over the years, with shortages remaining today as head teachers struggle to recruit for the coming academic year. The reasons for this are also well documented, with many leaving the profession due to long hours, low pay and the pressures of their work world.
That said, positive progress is turning things around for the better. Here’s why aspiring to be a teacher can still be a good idea today.
Coping with workload
It’s no secret that teachers face heavy workloads. Although there is still some way to go, there are many measures in place to help reduce these burdens
Such as Totality Services An IT company in London who work hard to reduce the workload of teachers through their services. They believe that technology is a tool that enhances skills, facilitates a sense of community, and engages students more in the digital age. With extensive experience in providing IT support to London colleges, trusts and schools, they ensure that everything works efficiently and as promised. Schools in other areas should also work on such services.
Some organizations are also working to promote a healthy work culture. Teachers are often asked how they feel about their workload and are encouraged to leave on time. Using automation to reduce admin work. Staff meetings may be fewer and pre-planned for efficiency. Of course, these things will vary between organizations, but try to find out where your potential workplace stands on these concepts before accepting an offer.
Extensive experience provides knowledge
Good schooling is more than sitting in a classroom. It can provide a wide range of experiences to both teachers and students.
For example, some grammar schools help promote overseas communities, helping to build schools and hospitals in places like Ghana. While taking on such a large initiative at such a busy time for teachers may seem unrewarding, these are collaborative efforts that can change everyone’s lives. Important memories will be made.
Investments in EdTech are increasing. E-learning resources are engaging kids differently, and online resources are increasingly helping teachers improve at what they do. Teaching is evolving alongside technology, providing support for teachers and a rich learning environment. Moreover teachers are offering Online English Speaking Courses Or preparing students for exams can improve the teaching process due to new technology.
Motivation is building
While some teachers quit the profession, others redoubled their resolve. Recent adversity has boosted their motivation considerably.
Remember, some people may be passive about their work, but teachers are passionate. The rest love their work and are determined to make a difference in their organization and community. Teaching is still worth exploring if you have a similar desire to do well. After all, some people have a calling.
Teachers will never be replaced by the technology they are using. Hardware and software are only tools, which help teachers improve their skills, level of accountability and quality of education they deliver. If used correctly, you will gain strength in the profession, defying any negative odds against you.

6 things you need to know as an employee
New Post has been published on https://dailysmalljobs.com/6-things-you-need-to-know-as-an-employee/
6 things you need to know as an employee
Discussing the things an employee should know before joining a company is very common and is entirely in the interest of the company. But what should an employee know to protect their interests?
An ideal workplace will provide opportunities for professional growth, flexible schedules and a positive work-life balance. They consistently rank high on candidate priority lists in employers’ polls.
You can find out how likely these topics are by researching employer websites, reading articles about the company, and coming up with a list of questions to ask before each interview.
1. The terms of your employment contract
The vast majority of businesses have their administrative, professional, and executive staff members sign a contract or employment agreement. Employment contracts are not necessary unless in certain circumstances, although they can protect both the employer and the employee.
As an employee, you must know Terms that should be included in an employment contract. Employment contracts define the roles of employees and employers and allow the employer to define the relationship. Most contracts contain clauses that prohibit employees from competing with the employer, soliciting clients, or disclosing trade secrets. The employment contract should also outline termination and dispute resolution procedures.
2. Company reputation and culture
When measuring a company’s credibility, it’s important to look at a wide range of indicators. Ideally, it would be successful, well established and ethically and legally sound. The firm’s website should have an “Investors” section where you can view financial data and Securities and Exchange Commission filings if the business is publicly traded.
Verify that the company has a history of growing profits and sales, even accounting for a weak quarter or rare declines caused by the economy. Find out if it ever happened Subject to investigation, fine or prosecution For engaging in illegal or unethical practices. Checking news items in local newspapers or industry publications can provide information on the company’s success, even if it is privately held.
Make sure it’s in a thriving sector that hasn’t been hit hard by technological advances or market changes. If you want to work in media, you should look for digital media jobs rather than print media jobs.
3. Company growth rate and brand value
A company’s value in the sector is an important consideration when choosing a career. Joining a company with an average or below-average brand value guarantees less professional advancement in the long run.
Knowing a company’s growth rate is as important as knowing its brand value. Growth rate can be measured in terms of workforce size or revenue/turnover growth. A corporation with a strong growth rate can help you advance in your career.
4. Career development opportunities
Before hiring you, your employer must have an open position that matches your training and experience. You can contribute more quickly if your employment suits you. Additionally, inquire about career possibilities with the business. Ask the interviewer about the average career path for the position you are applying for.
Find out if members of other departments have advanced in their careers, if so, at what level they have done so and how long it took them to reach each level. Check if the business has training programs to help you learn your job and acquire new skills. Check if the employer offers tuition reimbursement to encourage continuing education.
5. Work life balance
A good balance between work and personal life is another important element that employers must provide. You don’t have to work long hours every day at the expense of your personal and family life. Additionally, employers must provide employees with adequate time off, including personal days, holidays and maternity leave.
Some employers allow men to take time off to help their wives during pregnancy. Inquire about flexible scheduling and work-from-home options during the interview. Additionally, you can look at online studies on employer job satisfaction that are often promoted on job search and career websites.
6. Company attrition rate
A corporation’s attrition rate is the number of employees who leave the company. Before joining a company, it is important to understand its attrition rate. You don’t want to be a short-term employee of the company. Furthermore, a high attrition rate indicates unhappy and disaffected employees, where you don’t want to work.
Other considerations
Salary, bonuses, profit sharing and health benefits are all key aspects to consider in an employment relationship and should be considered when looking for the perfect job. Bureau of Labor Statistics”Professional Outlook Handbook“Most jobs pay above average.
Of course, this is one of the most important factors to consider when making a career decision. Since your paychecks will cover your bills, you must analyze the salary you are being paid. If the income is sufficient you should consider joining. Insurance, sick leave, health insurance, and other benefits are part of what an employer offers to their employees. If you want to secure your future, you should consider these things before joining.

Should we expect layoffs at Google?

Should we expect layoffs at Google?
Those who follow tech news must have noticed that even big names are laying off workers among other precautionary measures to cut costs. It was said that we might be facing another recession, but will this be the main reason for downsizing and will Google be in news to join the league soon?
in fear Inflation, the recession, and the potential ripple effects of the Ukraine and Russia wars, another thing that has caused a stir around the world is the eroding level of job security. The tech space has been a spotlight for many reasons, and how we could miss updates to Meta, formerly known as Facebook, and potential fears experienced by Google.
In this post, I’ll clear some of your doubts about the potential scare, how Google is handling the situation, and if they may no longer be in control.
Why are Google employees afraid?
Some Google employees fear they will be laid off later as industry-wide cutbacks take a bigger hit Technology Name last week.
Internal concerns are growing at Google, although the company has so far been spared the massive job cuts that have affected tech companies, particularly those supported by a struggling advertising market, according to documents seen by employees who spoke on the record.
Which tech companies will shrink in size in 2022?
This month in November, Meta told its employees it was laying off 13% of its workforce, or more than 11,000 workers, as the business deals with declining advertising revenue.
Under the guidance of its new owner, Elon Musk, it’s got everyone talking Twitter’s blue tickTwitter It has recently cut its employment by about half. Snap also announced a 20% reduction in August. Popular computer brand, Hewlett Packard HP announced on Tuesday that it plans to lay off 4,000 to 6,000 workers over the next three years in other parts of Silicon Valley.
What damage has Google suffered?
Even if Google’s business isn’t as severely impacted as many of its competitors, the potential recession, skyrocketing inflation and rising interest rates are all taking a toll. The business reported last month that, aside from a quarter during the pandemic, YouTube’s ad revenue fell from a year ago as Google experienced its weakest growth since 2013.
Google announced at the time that it would significantly slow down hiring in the final three months of the year.
Is the decline of crypto a part of this decline for tech companies?
No one can claim not to have felt the impact of COVID-19, likewise the new wind of cryptocurrencyEspecially after the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX.
The crypto market has taken a hit in Google’s recent search results and raised concerns about the contagion of the industry.
How is Google dealing with the fear of downsizing?
The business has announced that it will discontinue Stadia, its online gaming service, and cancel the next iteration of its Pixel Book laptop. It also cut funding to Area 120, its internal incubator.
Ending is a growing source of concern, at least in some areas. Additionally, some activists are using memes to humorously express their concerns.
While we hope the corporation can make it through this phase, Google employees motivated by their possible fear of being laid off have created sheer humor.
Should we expect layoffs at Google?
Well, until now, Google has been able to manage its workforce by cutting costs, allowances and other perks. Although it’s considered a temporary safety net, hopefully, if the corporation can shake its way out of this phase, Google likely won’t experience layoffs. But then again, it’s safe to prepare for the worst when making fun memes around their dismissal.

Buying VS Renting for PhD Students: Key Factors to Consider
New Post has been published on https://dailysmalljobs.com/buying-vs-renting-for-phd-students-key-factors-to-consider/
Buying VS Renting for PhD Students: Key Factors to Consider
Across the UK, students of all ages and types are struggling for accommodation, with many forced to live in neighboring towns and commute to campus.
For PhD students, the situation is a bit different, as the average PhD student is 30 or older, as you must already have a bachelor’s and master’s degree.
As such, you may be more settled than the average graduate and may want to think about getting on the property ladder.
Still, buying a home isn’t always easy, so deciding whether to buy or rent a home is always a challenge. Here are some key things you need to consider when making this important decision.
flexibility
For most students, renting is seen as the most desirable option because it gives you the flexibility to be able to move if and when you need to. If you own your home, you will need to find a buyer or tenant to occupy the property. However, if you are a PhD student who has no plans to move to another university or who lives in a city with multiple universities, such as London, you may want to consider buying a house. So, if you haven’t mapped out your future yet, or aren’t sure where you want to work after you finish your studies, you may want to continue renting. However, if you have a family and want to live in the same area, you can consider buying a property in your preferred area.
Fund your accommodation
Whichever option you choose, you need to consider how you are going to pay for your accommodation Everyone needs a safe place to live, so it’s a necessary expense, but you need to consider how much you’ll spend and what you’ll get in return. The main difference between renting and buying is that when you finish renting, you have nothing to show for your investment. As such, someone looking to put money aside for the future may want to consider buying a property. If you decide to buy a home, you will likely need a mortgage to cover the cost of the property. Fortunately, experts like Jamie Thompson Mortgage can help you find the right one. Ph.D LoansSo you can use your stipend to cover your payments and get yourself on the property ladder.
Living alone or having a roommate
When renting a property, especially in a large university town, many students find that they have to live with roommates to afford their dream home. If you want to live downtown, you may find that you have to have a roommate whether you rent or buy. If you can afford a tiny house, you can live alone. The more roommates you have, the cheaper your accommodation will be, but you may not feel comfortable living with too many people, especially if you don’t know them well. So, when you’re considering whether you can afford to rent or buy, think about who you want to live with and what you’re comfortable with.
Overall, every PhD student is different and faces a unique situation. As such, what works for you may not be a good idea for someone else. As you consider whether to buy or rent a home during your PhD studies, consider these factors and take the time to review your situation to make an informed decision that will benefit you now and in the future.

Will learning to code help you get a job? , parenting careers
If you accidentally hit Ctrl+u on the keyboard and a box of random characters appears on the screen, you’ll know what the code looks like.
While these strings of letters, numbers, and templates seem terribly illogical, I’ve always been fascinated by how these symbols fit together to create a webpage. For those unfamiliar with coding – the front-end is what the user will see, as it usually refers to everything the user encounters.
Centers for teaching these 21st century skills are popping up all over the country and recently I found myself fulfilling my curiosity in a day. Front-End Coding Workshop Islington, London.
While one might expect coding clubs to be filled with fashionable computer whizs, silently tapping away at their computers, instead I found myself in a cozy studio with stylish 70s floor lamps and a striking red “S” on the exposed brick wall, lit with vintage . the bulb
There was also a surprising mix of ages and genders – our class was a mix of careers from small business owners to digital designers and artists. Everyone had a different reason for wanting to code. “I’ve always paid someone to design my website and I could learn to do it myself for less, so I thought why not? I’ll give it a try,” said Chris Cray, a freelance animator.
Steer trainers Sam, left and Tim, right. Photo: Steer
Similarly Tom Butler, a website producer on the course, said: “I wanted to be involved in the design of our site. Seems like an easy way to start learning front-end development.”
The computer languages HTML, CSS and Java sound complicated, but it was surprisingly easy to learn. HTML is your site’s furniture, while CSS is the decoration that changes font color and spacing – making everything look stylish. It was oddly rewarding to type a command, refresh the webpage, and see your changes pop up. If you have an artistic streak, you can also have fun experimenting with new colors, images and designs.
It’s creative and amazingly fun, but what’s the point of learning to code? Will it really benefit your career? The short answer is yes: the software is currently in development Fastest growing industry in the UK and have International shortage of coders In the job market.
In fact, understanding software can be an essential skill for some startups. “Learning to code was incredibly rewarding – I wouldn’t have started my company without it. From day two I was able to jump into the code and change our site,” said Silas Walton, Founder. watch exchange and former coding student.
Another career benefit is learning to work with developers. Take John Hitchcox, Digital Art Director GQ, who learned to code while launching the iPhone version. “Now when I start working from digital creative I understand how things are made and, importantly, how long things take and therefore cost.”
So, learning to write computer scripts can have practical benefits for your career. But what about other jobs that don’t traditionally require a lot of computer use?
“As the world becomes increasingly digital, coding is becoming a necessary skill for more and more jobs,” said company founder Amelia Humphreys. steering, which runs workshops. “Similarly, as the digital economy continues to grow, we’re seeing a greater business demand for people with coding skills.”
Right now coding is a valuable skill for any business trying to connect with customers online, Humphreys added. “We’ve taught everyone from dentists to ballet dancers and tennis coaches how to code.”
This is also reflected in industry trends – digital careers are emerging Other industries have double the growth rateAnd work for those Pay more than othersEven at entry level. So, whether you’re early, mid or late in your career – coding is fast becoming an essential resource for the modern worker.

Was Yoda a medieval monk? It takes a museum curator to tell you. Guardian Careers
uUntil the advent of social media, being a curator at the British Library was a lonely, outside job. In many ways it still is for Julian Harrison, curator of pre-1600 historical manuscripts. Behind the scenes he cares for priceless collections that include copies of Beowulf, some of the world’s oldest Bibles, the Lindisfarne Gospels and Henry VIII’s state papers. He currently curates exhibitions such as Magna Carta: Law, Liberty, Legacy The difference for Harrison these days is that he does it all with a virtual audience of thousands.
Harrison has worked at the British Library since 2006 “I can’t imagine how we could communicate what we do without the occasional story in the media,” he says The transition began in 2010 when the library started an experimental blog to chart the digitization of Greek manuscripts. “It was a special thing for a special audience,” he added.
This pilot project was developed at the British Library Medieval Manuscripts Blog, a vivid and illuminating account of the curator’s life. “We use it to promote what we do,” Harrison said. “A popular post explains why we don’t wear white gloves when handling manuscripts, but we also strive for a non-academic readership. Our most popular post is Knight vs Snail which shows why images of armed knights fighting snails are common in illuminated manuscripts.”
These images have proved very popular online. “People often don’t realize how beautiful illuminated manuscripts are and how technically proficient they were in the Middle Ages,” he says. Then there are pictures with a comic twist. One of Harrison’s posts is entitled Lolcats of the Middle Ages, another features a doodle figure, curiously looking like Yoda from Star Wars. The images appeal to the same online audience, Harrison noted, that enjoys watching cats play the piano on YouTube.
When Harrison took over the Medieval Manuscripts blog it had two hit readers a day. Now its record daily traffic stands at 36,000. A supports this Twitter account With 23,400 followers, and it’s clear that rather than doing a quiet, hidden job, his daily life as a curator is being presented in a new, exciting way.
“We’ve got an incredibly international readership,” Harrison said. “We have visitors in every country you can think of with the exception of Antarctica, Greenland and North Korea. We get a lot of inquiries from people who want to do the same thing as us. Many young aspiring curators. social media Certainly the dynamic has changed.
Harrison talks about the enriching effect of social media; How it allows many people a peek into a world that was previously hidden from them. And just as Harrison found an audience by chronicling the life of a curator, James Rebanks, a shepherd charting his work at Lakeland Falls, attracted a formidable social media following with daily tweets.
Rebanks has built a social media following, tweeting about his work as a shepherd. Photo: PR
Rebanks tells me he’s long wanted to write about his work as a shepherd, a job still guided by the ancient rhythms of the annual calendar. There are spring, summer lambs as he sends his flock to fall, autumn fair and winter darkness. His life is closely tied to the landscape. “It wasn’t until 1998 or 1999 that I wrote for the magazine that we [shepherds] did,” he says, “but the Twitter part was completely accidental. It started when some friends encouraged me to tweet about the farm.
He wrote his first tweet on 18 January 2012, An image of his flock in fawn green falls under a dark winter sky, it set the tone for what followed. Beautiful pictures of sheep herding through skinny northern lanes, playful shots of his college at work, snippets of rural wisdom and insight. “I was nervous,” Rebanks says. “I started anonymously and didn’t appear at all in my first 13,000 tweets There are many shy and modest people in the society. I never post pictures of people I don’t approve of.”
But soon Rebanks was attracting a following, a Twitter swarm of her own that numbered in the tens, then hundreds, and then thousands. “It took a while to get to 700 followers,” he recalls. “Then it doubled in 2014 and now it’s really taken off.”
Today Rebanks has 57,000 followers on Twitter who travel with him to the falls and back to the market. Last month she tweeted about the birth of 10 sheepdogs, Posting a video clip to Vine That has been viewed 780,000 times. All this attention has propelled him into the mainstream. His first book this month, shepherd lifePublished by Penguin. It is currently being read as a Book of the Week on BBC Radio 4.
“The reason I’m doing this is because I think we’re the forgotten people in the landscape. The Lake District is the chocolate box, the picture postcard. People forget us. What I’m really doing on Twitter is ‘we’re still here’,” Rebanks said. is about an infectious enthusiasm about what you love and sharing it with other people.”
Like Harrison, Rebanks’ success lies in opening windows into hidden worlds, an enduring attraction of social media. This is something that novelist Clare King also tried to achieve. He had not previously documented his writing life but decided to Start a blog While he was working on what would be his first novel, rainbow at night,
Her posts chart the writing process, practical tips on the novelist’s craft, and her experiences in the publishing industry. “I didn’t really expect people to listen to me because there are so many writing blogs out there,” she explains. “But it was a way to publicly state my intentions and therefore hold myself accountable.”
This regular, well-crafted mediation by a working novelist found a like-minded, engaged audience on Twitter. Raja lifts the lid on an industry that many want to break into, but has long been considered mysterious and exclusive to outsiders. Have any of his readers or followers gone on to get their own publishing deals?
“Yes, many have and I am always happy to hear and share their good news. We all need a little cheerleading in this world,” she says.

Mindfulness meditation can boost your career and help you get a job. Guardian Careers
lLike yoga before it, mindfulness is the latest Eastern practice to go thoroughly mainstream in the West. class is Offered by the NHS and for mental well-being Teaching at school It helps students to stay calm and concentrate on their studies. So what can it offer in the workplace and can it help your career?
Geelong Thubten was a Tibetan Buddhist monk For over 20 years. He teaches monthly classes at Google’s headquarters in Dublin and says there are three ways mindfulness can help you at work.
pressure reduction
Mindfulness became popular in the West when University of Massachusetts professor Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn adapted Eastern meditation methods into stress reduction programs. For the chronically ill. Thobten says it does more than just help people manage their stress — it changes how they deal with it. “You’re going for a deeper approach,” he says, “because you want to take the mind off stressful thoughts.”

But in a high-octane work environment, a newsroom or a stock exchange, for example, is there any benefit to stress? “This adrenaline can get people going,” Thobten says. “But the problem is that if you’re on it, you’re flooding your body with stress hormones all day long, and you Get tired, age quickly and get sickit gains people, but it is very short-lived.”
mental clarity
Stress at work has been shown to reduce mental capacity. And Thobten claims that people who practice mindfulness can achieve more than adrenaline-junkies. Because they are more aware and “don’t miss a beat”.
A 2011 study Among HR workers, it was found that those who took an eight-week mindfulness meditation course were less likely to switch between jobs and showed improved memory. Regular exercise “brings a greater sense of focus, non-distraction and concentration,” says Thubten — all things that will improve work performance. “I think it’s very important to bring that aspect into it,” she says, “because focusing on stress is negative, and some people don’t even want to admit they’re stressed.”
Compassion and empathy
“Compassion and empathy are very important for all the conflict, judgment and resentment that goes on in the workplace,” explains Thobten. “If you can engage in meditation practice and learn how to develop a more positive attitude toward others, it has amazing benefits.”
A sense of tolerance and non-prejudice is essential to working in any workplace.
Geelong Thubten
Can too much empathy dull a competitive edge that might be necessary to get ahead? “It’s a really interesting question,” Thubten said. “It depends on how you define compassion. If we think of compassion as a pushover, of course it won’t work, but the kind of compassion we talk about in Buddhism is a deep understanding of others.
“A sense of tolerance and non-prejudice is essential to doing well in any workplace. If we’re going through our workdays feeling resentful of our colleagues, our bosses, our clients, and we don’t know how to let go, then our lives are a mess.”
The key to this approach is to have compassion for yourself as well. “People in the Western world are so self-judgmental, so hard on themselves, and meditation is an amazing tool for developing self-acceptance, a sense of inner peace.”
That sense of self-acceptance can help people when they’re job hunting and during the interview process. “Mindfulness definitely makes people more confident, makes them more comfortable in their own skin,” says Thobten. “They learn how to be more in control of the present moment and they come out better.”
How much meditation do you need to experience the benefits? Thubten recommends 15-20 minutes a day, but also to integrate it into everyday life. “I teach techniques that my students can do at their desks, in meetings or on the tube home. All the while you can learn to connect with the present moment and reduce stress.”
Mindfulness is currently undergoing a surge in popularity with countless articles in the media extolling the benefits of the practice and apps such as headspace A promise to help us pause and be present no matter how busy we are.
There has been some criticism of the mainstreaming of the practice, dubbed “McMindfulness” – a modified package divorced from its spiritual roots, Thubten is generally very happy that mindfulness is so popular and so accepted, but has concerns about people who are not well trained, offering classes for money. He does not accept money for his work, but asks the organizations he teaches to donate to his charity. “I don’t mind if people make a living out of it, but if they do it as a way to get rich, it loses its heart,” he says.
Mindfulness meditation has one Proven ability to reduce anxiety And people are there to help Greater power of concentration, but Thobten says the main benefit it can bring to your career is that it makes you a nicer person. “If you’re kind to people, you get along better with them,” he says. “And when you meet people you do good in the world. They will reward you and your career will go well.

Apprenticeships aren't just for school holidays: Why I changed careers late in life Guardian Careers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
wWhat do you picture when you think of an apprentice? Perhaps a 16-year-old who wants a fast track into the workforce and can’t wait to get paid. But apprenticeships aren’t just a valuable way out of school leave, they can be the catalyst for a career change and follow up on missed opportunities.
Money invested in apprenticeships for over-19s has increased steadily since 2009-10. In 2013-14, £770m was spent on older apprentices In sectors ranging from publishing to construction. To find out why people train later in life, we spoke to four apprentices – and ex-apprentices – about why they took the risk and what the results were.
Kevin Eggleton, 45, left his office job in 2013 to start an advanced apprenticeship in the care and management of racehorses.
In 2013, I was 43 years old and had been working nights for 20 years at a dairy company in Somerset. I was not enjoying it, and I was getting very tired. One day, I said to my wife: “I have to see if I can do something I enjoy for the rest of my career”.
I have had a passion for horses since childhood so I decided to write a letter to help out at the stables. I have sent this to many instructors. I heard from my current manager, we set up an interview and I was successful.
I met my NVQ assessor through working there, he came horse riding at the weekend. He asked if I would think about getting a qualification. At first I thought, ‘Why would I want to do this at my age?’ But I took the chance, and I’m so glad I did – what I learned during the 18 months of my apprenticeship was incredible. It involves learning about horses’ digestive systems, muscle structure and how they should be fed for optimal health.
Starting an apprenticeship is a sacrifice. I took a £15,000 annual pay cut and had to move my family from Somerset to Wiltshire, where the stables are. It was a big disaster, but we don’t regret it.
I am in charge of feeding all the horses and now running the main box for the races. When I look after a horse wins a race, the emotion is incredible – it’s my hard work paying off. My wife says she sees such a difference in me. I now return home happy and joyful.
Jack Cave, 19, gave up his place in a professional rugby team to take up an apprenticeship in civil engineering
At 17, I won a professional contract with the under-20 Sheffield Eagles rugby team. At that age, the idea of getting paid to do what I loved – even if it was just a small training fee – seemed fantastic. But the reality of playing full-time in the first team was slim.
After a few years of training, I started thinking about what I wanted to do with my life and how I wanted to get there. Even if I succeed in making it full-time in professional rugby, it may only last until I’m 30 when I have to go out and find another job.
I added it all up and thought about what I wanted to do. When I was in school, my teachers advised me to look into apprenticeships. I’ve always had an interest in building things, so I kept an eye out for opportunities in the construction sector on the National Apprenticeship website. My mom and I have talked about it for ages. Ultimately, I decided that an apprenticeship would broaden my opportunities.
I started at Carillion in 2014. I worked on site four days a week and studied at college the other day. I loved being hands-on so quickly and having so much support; I was paired with an engineer who became my mentor.
The work can be long hours. Recently I’ve been helping to build a new road to ease traffic congestion and that sometimes means working until 10pm. If you start pouring concrete, you can’t just stop halfway.
The thing I enjoy most is helping to build something from scratch and seeing the end result – it’s really satisfying. I am now working towards my level three NVQ, which will eventually lead to an HND which can be converted into a degree. I am really happy about my choice [to take on the apprenticeship]I know where I am going and how I want to improve.
Before my apprenticeship, I was working as a model maker for my friend’s advertising agency for 10 years. But when the economic crisis hit, the work stopped because people didn’t want to spend as much on advertising. I needed to find something new.
I never knew what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to keep my mind active. I’ve always had an interest in the creative arts, so I was really excited to get the opportunity to apprentice in Real SFX.
I left school at 16 and part of the apprenticeship was a one-year NVQ course, so I’d go back to college for a few months after spending six weeks with Real SFX. Returning to a learning environment at age 30 scared me. All my junior course mates in college were up to date with computing and I was not. I was behind from the start, but I still did well and I’m really proud.
I also took a big financial hit for a year. I earned £34 a day as an apprentice and when I worked at Real SFX I spent £20 a day on petrol driving from my home in Swansea to my office in Cardiff.
But it’s worth it – I’ve been involved in lots of exciting projects. I have worked on TV programs including Sherlock, Casualty, Doctor Who and Hollyoaks, helping to create explosion scenes through atmospheric smoke and fire.
I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to others trying to find work in this industry. Television sets can be a foreign place to work, and you don’t understand them until you’re on one. There is a different language. As a beginner you can take it before you go there.
