<< Le comité, convoqué extraordinairement pour rétablir les pouvoirs ou les suppléer, n’osa prendre aucun parti et s’en tira par un il n'y a pas lieu à délibérer. Ainsi les intérêts de la Commune auraient été sacrifiés, si les réclamations n’avaient obtenu le soir même un décret suspensif. Mais, dira-t-on pourquoi le procès-verbal du district ne faisait-il pas mention de la députation à l’Assemblée nationale, puisqu’elle avait été arrêtée? Ah! Pourquoi?...C’est un mystère qui achève de démontrer que tout sera prévarication dans la nomination aux places municipales et que l'asservissement des Parisiens est près d’être consommé. >>

Translation: “The Committee, which was extraordinarily convened to restore the powers or substitute them, did not dare to take any and decided to leave it at that. In this way, the Commune's interests have been sacrificed, if the claims had not obtained a suspensive decree that very evening. But, one might ask, why didn't the district's minutes mention the dispatch to the Assemblée nationale , since it had been stopped? Ah! Why?...It's a mystery that just goes to show that all will be prejudiced in the appointment to municipal positions, and that the [continued] subjugation of Parisians is close to being achieved.”

<< L’Assemblée nationale vient de recevoir, par un courrier extraordinaire,la nouvelle de l’arrestation du sieur Bonne de Savardin à Châlons-sur- Marne, conjointement à l’abbé de Barmond, député. Elle a chargé son président de demander au roi de donner les ordres nécessaires pour qu’ils fussent conduits à Paris sous bonne escorte. A cette nouvelle, le sieur Guignard prendra sans doute la fuite, s’il ne l’a déjà prise. Mais à qui confiera-t-on la garde de ces conspirateurs? Est-ce au pouvoir exécutif, l’âme de toutes conspirations?Est-ce à la garde nationale, dont l’état major, composé de ci-devant comtes et marquis, est à la dévotion des conspirateurs? Ne favorisera-t-on* pas une seconde fois son évasion? Telle est l’affreuse situation de la patrie, qu’elle doit toujours être en garde contre les trahisons. >> [~favorise]

Translation: “The National Assembly has just received, by an extraordinary courier, the news of the arrest of Mr.Bonne de Savardin in Châlons-sur-Marne, together with the Abbé de Barmond, deputy. It instructed its president to ask the king to give the necessary orders for them to be escorted to Paris. On hearing this news, Mr. Guignard will no doubt flee, if he hasn't already done so. But who will be entrusted with the custody of these conspirators? Is it the executive power, which is the soul of all conspiracies? Is it the national guard, whose general staff, made up of former counts and marquises, is devoutly loyal to the government? Marquis, is at the conspirators' mercy? Will we not encourage his escape a second time? Such is the awful situation of the fatherland, that it must always be on guard against treachery.”

Here is an excerpt of Marat's notes at the end of the day's issue.

<< Je le dis avec douleur: l’édifice de la constitution est manqué, et il l’est pour toujours, à moins que nous ne prenions enfin le seul moyen propre à contenir dans le devoir les ennemis de la révolution. Or, si après le 14 juillet [Fête de la Fédération], époque à laquelle le parti patriotique était tout puissant, il s’était trouvé un seul homme d’Etat dans le sénat de la nation, il aurait senti que nos tyrans, revenus de leur première terreur, ne cesseront de conspirer contre la liberté naissante qu’après l’avoir détruite [ou] après avoir été exterminés. >>

Translation:

"I say it with pain: the edifice of the constitution has failed, and it is so forever, unless we finally take the only proper means of containing the enemies of the revolution in duty. Now, if after July 14 [massive celebration held on the first anniversary of the Seige of the Bastille], when the patriotic party was all-powerful, there had been a sole statesman in the senate of the nation, he would have felt that our tyrants, having returned from their first terror, will only cease to conspire against nascent freedom after having destroyed it [or] after [tyrants] have been exterminated."
