the storm had been raging outside for the past two days, meaning that cyrus had absolutely nowhere to be except in the confines of his warm home with his boyfriend and their dogs. the sounds of violent rain had been keeping him from a deeper slumber but that still hadn’t stopped him from waking up at the early hours of morning, though the lack of his normal routine was starting to make him crankier than usual. still, he felt extremely thankful that he got to be somewhere safe with zefa, especially as the other’s birthday approached. 

on march 3rd, cyrus woke up with purpose. it was the first time they’d be spending his boyfriend’s birthday together and even if the circumstances weren’t the best, he still wanted to make his day as special as he could. that lead him to the kitchen, the flickers of the lights keeping him company as he made breakfast. an hour and a very stressful call with his mother later, cy had managed to make the perfect looking heart-shaped pancakes—or as close to perfect as his limited cooking skills allowed. placing them on a tray with the company of orange juice and zefa’s morning meds, he nearly skips his way back to their shared bedroom with excitement. the food is put aside as he sits on the edge of the bed, kisses placed onto zefa’s shoulder. “wake up, baby. it’s your birthday.” he whispers, lips still skimming against his boyfriend’s skin, bringing his fingers to gently run through his hair. “and i have a surprise for you.”

“see, motor oil is, like, one of my favorite scents on a guy, same as burnt rubber, so i guess i’ve never really concerned about scent. i mean… when a guy smells good, got a nice cologne, it’s totally amazing, but i don’t really think about it that much,” winter hummed, her head cocking to the side just a touch as she thinks about it for a moment. “i think it was the accent for me. a good southern accent? how could i ever resist? plus, the looks he serves in eclipse… i’m into the black hoodie and long blonde hair. it’s… so hot.” but then again, she liked rough and tumble types, and jasper was clearly a fighter, whereas edward kind of seemed like the exact opposite. but her nose scrunched up when he mentioned alice, her head shaking quickly. “god, i couldn’t stand her. i just wanted to tell her to shut up whenever she showed up - she got on my nerves, even in the books.”

“oh, so you’re tellin’ me your type is bikers? yeah, baby girl, that ain’t surprising in the least.” he says teasingly as a chuckle follows, throwing his head back onto the couch. “nah, i already feel that smell enough because of my own bike, i’m more of a strong cologne type. the kind that overwhelms your senses whenever the guy’s close and doesn’t leave you for days? that happens with zefa. i swear i can barely feel the smell of my own cologne sometimes because his is always clung onto me.” he sighs with a little smile on the corner of his lips. “i get what you mean. jasper is a cutie but he definitely looked his best in eclipse—they knew exactly what they were doin’ with that. and i don’t know, i just have always liked girls with short dark hair, ya know? thought she was so fuckin’ pretty.” he shrugs. “but speakin’ of the books, it’s been years since i’ve read ‘em. you think it’s worth it givin’ it another read?”

Spruce laughed. “I don’t really listen to music… which like… I know that’s something a lot of people say, but I don’t. I like classic music, because I always put it on for the dogs, and I really enjoy like… movie soundtracks, not the ones where they make popular songs for movies, but the big band ones.” They blushed a little. When the subject got back to their life, Spruce just shrugged. “It’s okay,” they said. And even if it wasn’t, what could they do. Once again blushing, glad for Cyrus to move on, and yet also aware that he probably really didn’t know any song. “Nope, but I still probably heard the music, I’m bad with names. Can I look it up now? Or is that too… I don’t know, confrontational?”

his face always contorts into a slight grimace whenever someone says they don’t listen to music, which isn’t out of judgment or anything of the sort, cyrus just can’t imagine what his own life would be like without music in it. “well, our songs definitely stray a bit further away from that but i can say that a couple of them have classic influences to them.” he says. clearly, family was a sensitive subject for spruce, which cyrus could understand all too well, so he doesn’t say anything else about it. and they were still catching up after years of not seeing each other—he didn’t want the mood to plummet down during that conversation. “yeah, yeah, of course. i’ll feel kinda weird seein’ your reaction to my own music but knock yourself out. maybe no love in la can be a good one for ya? it’s upbeat. we released it a couple of months ago.”

Suraj nodded. They didn’t have that one, just Netflix. Perhaps someone in the Trailer Park would let them borrow their subscription. “There are a lot,” they agreed, nostalgic for the video stores, or the little stands in the poorer neighbourhoods where ripped dvds were sold. Suraj nodded along, they had heard of the Office, and they had seen the new Hindi version of it, but Brooklyn Nine-nine wasn’t ringing a bell. “3 Idiots has a lot of different subgenres… uhm… it does have songs… because… it’s a Bollywood movie.” Most of their fave movies included songs, even though in some it was really weird. It was why they were finding themselves slowly growing invested in the Korean Dramas on Netflix, they too combined different genres. They blinked, they knew what a chihuahua was. “They can have long hair?” horror image.

cyrus rarely ventured out of what he already knew and liked when it came to movies because he didn’t exactly have the attention span to watch new things. however, he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t at least curious to know what bollywood movies where all about. sure, he had an idea of what they looked like but he’d never actually watched one. “sounds like it’s fun.” he nods his head. “3 idiots, that’s on netflix? ‘cause i’ll definitely be lookin’ it up.” he decides. a short chuckle passes through his lips at suraj’s question and the expression present on their face, already pulling his phone back out to look up a picture of little chubby dex to show. “yeah. but it’s cute, it’s cute, promise—look!” he turns his phone slightly, like a proud parent showing a picture of their kid. “that’s him. adorable, right?”

“hey, it takes place at christmas - and if the bullshit that hallmark comes out with every year counts as christmas, then it counts as christmas too,” gunner hummed, a smirk spreading over his lips as he did. he didn’t make it a habit to watch a great deal of hallmark movies, of course, but he’d seen enough, and heard enough, to know that nothing good ever came from the channel. a scandalized gasp escaped the male’s lips when the shot the other a look, giving an almost disappointed shake of his head. “how can you be my leech if you don’t like action movies? what the hell kinda movies do you even watch if you don’t watch action?”

“alright, fine. maybe you have a point there but i’ll only give it to ya because i also can’t stand hallmark movies. that’s comin’ from a person that actually fuckin’ loves cliché romance stories in movies but i cannot bring myself to stomach one of those movies.” cyrus shudders as to make his point, shaking his head right after. “i thought we were already aware of the differences between the two of us, which makes it perfect that i’m your leech. wouldn’t want someone exactly like yourself around all the time, would ya? what a bore.” he rolls his eyes, moving his face away from the movie to look at gunner. “and there’s plenty of better shit to watch. like, horror movies for one. that’s my thing.”

           a nickel-plated coin rolls between two fingers , her last one . dangled , teasing the coin slot as a glimmer catches the old , hanging , yellowish light just right . attention is quickly moved from the old , dust encased old jukebox to the person nearest by .  ❝ hey , you , ❞ she starts off , an attempt to steal their attention . ❝ come pick out the worst song on this thing . i wanna see what you got . ❞ and she wanted to see how long it would take one of these old , beer guzzling regulars to complain , but there was no need to spill that just yet .

          straw stuck between his lips, he raises one finger in the air before he’s abandoning his drink, jumping up from his seat and making his way towards juni. “step aside, babes, i know just the thing.” lips form a small pout as cyrus surveys through the list of songs in the jukebox, trying to find the one he already knew wouldn’t have a good effect on the crowd currently at the bar. “this shit is fuckin’ awful. played it a few months back when i was drunk and sad and wanted to sob into my vodka sour—nearly got my ass kicked out.” says as he returns, the sound of you’re beautiful by james blunt starting to fill up the place. “don’t fuckin’ know whose idea it was to put that in there but...”

his expression faltered . fletcher wasn’t entirely sure how to decipher the words of the other , but he figured thinking too hard about whether the comment had been an insult or a compliment meant it was the former , by a long shot . “ well , he’s cool , so .. “ was his argument , a pathetic one ; other than batman fletcher had never really cared for superheroes , brushing them beneath the umbrella of being ‘ uncool ‘ or ‘ dorky ‘ , and don’t even try and ask him about any of the lore surrounding such characters . he was clueless , and that was the way he liked it . the next comment , though — now that was something he could get on board with . a wag of his finger in cyrus’ direction showed his agreement . “ i absolutely should’ve . people love it when guys dress in skirts these days . when jaden smith does it it’s cool and avant-garde , but when i do it ?? everybody laughs and points fingers at me , and i can’t go anywhere for a week without somebody asking why i’m not wearing a dress . “ anything for his sibling , though ; fletcher hated most people , but his counterpart was one person that took up the entirety of his chest without fail , without condition . “ i don’t think i’ve met your sister yet . do they live around here too ?? “ 

          cyrus simply shrugs at the other’s response about batman. he didn’t care about superheroes, at all, and had never wasted more than a couple of minutes watching one of the movies so he couldn’t really say it was a subject he was interested in. and by the way fletcher moves right past it, he assumes it’s the same for him. he snorts, tearing his eyes away from his sketchbook to look at the other, arms crossed on top of it as he leans forward a bit. “well, maybe it’s because you’re this really muscular dude that just screams alpha macho man and people don’t really expect you to be out here wearin’ a fucking skirt, which they’re completely wrong for doing so, or maybe it’s because you looked absolutely miserable, fletcher. like, you were bein’ forced at gunpoint to put on a skirt and parade around roswell.” he continues to laugh, knuckles pressed onto his lips until he stops. “yeah, they do. we all moved back home when i forced the band to go on a hiatus, ya know?” not his proudest moment but it was a necessity for all of them.

“I can understand that, yeah. It can be a tricky balancing act between sticking to your guns and doing what you want to do, and also being open to other’s ideas and requests. As for me, I was moving around a lot when I was trying to actually get my foot in the door being a broadcast engineer. A lot of internships and trying to get a wide variety of different ways stations run under my belt. But that made acquiring new close friends a lot more challenging.” They shook their head a bit, as if trying to clear their thoughts. “It is quite a bit calmer out here than some places I have been. But I also like that it isn’t totally isolated either, you know?”

          “maturing is realizing i was a real ass at times because i wanted so badly to be in control of something that isn’t just mine, you know? this will sound kind of douchey but workin’ with my family is what forced me to be more open to other people’s ideas. because you don’t wanna screw things up with your own family, ya know?” the idea of being in a band with your siblings, as fun as it sounds, was also nightmarish as fuck. and even if cyrus didn’t regret a single thing about it, he sure wishes he had thought things through back then. he wonders if his relationship with his older brother would be as ruined as it is now if their band had never taken off. “yeah, yeah. it’s definitely a breath of fresh air for people who spent most of their lives movin’ around a lot, right? at least it feels like that for me.”

“So horchata, in Mexico, is made out of rice milk, and it usually has vanilla, and often times cinnamon too, which is how I like it.” The tiny little cloud that is Poppy is held up to Zeferino’s face, touching his cheek as he cuddles her; she’s far too adorable for him to resist. “It’s drank cold. But atole is drank hot, and it’s made from corn flour, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Champurrado is the same thing as that but with chocolate. It’s really popular around día de muertos and Christmas. We have it a lot with tamales. But it works great for breakfast too.” He isn’t the best teacher but he doesn’t mind sharing about his culture with someone who actually seems interested, and someone he cares about too. Several kisses are pressed to Poppy’s little head before Zef sets her back down reluctantly. “Gardenias, too!” he adds to the list of flowers as he moves to wash his hands in the sink so he can start prepping dinner. “Those are the ones that smell so fucking strong.” He’s no expert in flowers but he trusted the florist when it came to the meanings of the ones decided upon, so he could only believe that they all meant what was claimed. 

Drying his hands, the kitchen towel is then draped over Zef’s shoulder, making him look like some sort of kitchen wizard househusband. “You might get in my way,” he remarks, coming over to pat Cyrus’ thigh, and winks to show he’s just teasing; he grew up in kitchens not much bigger than this one so he’s always been able to work with limited counterspace. “¡Ay! I don’t think I told you but I’m planning on adopting a dog really soon!” His first step in the cooking process begins with finding the produce selected for him, inspecting them, and then washing. “His name’s Dexter, he’s this longhair Chihuahua at the shelter. He’s already an adult because his previous owner couldn’t take care of him anymore, she was this older lady who overfed him pretty bad so now he needs help losing some weight.” Zef doesn’t stop working as he talks; honestly it’s so much nicer than just cooking for himself and trying to occupy the empty space somehow, usually by singing. “I’ve got some pictures of him on my phone, back pocket—” Hands busy with chopping, he sticks his butt out to indicate it’s okay for Cyrus to remove the phone himself. “My password is 3-5-6-9. He’s really cute, he reminds me of a little sausage. I’ve never had any pets before, actually, so I’m wicked excited.”

           cyrus hums idly as he listens, long legs swinging carefully so he doesn’t kick and ruins the counter he’s currently sitting on top of. phone in hand, he’s typing away the names of the flowers and looking up their meanings, but doesn’t focus on reading until zefa’s done explaining. “champurrado sounds fuckin’ incredible but maybe i’m a little biased because i love chocolate.” he shrugs lightly and lowers his face, lit up by the screen of his phone as he starts to read into what comes up. now he wasn’t someone that ever cared enough to do such a thing but he also never had any reasons to. sure, he had received plenty of flowers previously from fans all over the world, but never from someone special. and cyrus isn’t really sure if his search will actually mean anything but from what he knew of zefa by now, the man seemed like the type to actually care about such details.

          small chuckle bubbles out of him at the comment, not tearing his eyes away from the screen as he answers. “hey, baby—if you want me to leave ya alone, you can just tell me.” he teases but his expression changes a little as he actually focuses on what’s coming up, the words causing him to start chewing on his bottom lip. adoration, affection, feelings for you. he shouldn’t be as surprised, seeing as though whatever they’re doing is leading towards something more, but he can’t help the warmness that fills up his chest, the good kind that makes him smile and brings that pink shade back to his cheeks. still beaming, cyrus looks up from his phone and returns his attention to zefa, nearly interrupting whatever he’s doing to kiss him fucking breathless. but he holds himself instead. he’d have the opportunity to do that later. “oh, wait, wait. did you just say you’re adopting a dog?” mouth hangs slightly open in surprise when the words finally register in his head. “oh my god, that’s so fuckin’ adorable. and a chihuahua, too?” he chuckles. apparently they both had a soft spot for tiny pups. eyes fall to zefa’s butt, chuckling to himself as he does as he’s told and grabs the phone. “that is exciting as hell. poppy is also my first pet but i’ve always wanted to get one. it just wasn’t viable because i mostly lived on the road for almost a decade of my life so there was no point in leavin’ the poor baby all alone at home. and bringing a pet on tour can be fuckin’ stressful. roswell seemed like the perfect place to finally get myself a little companion.”

“that’s better than me, honestly. i feel like pirates of the caribbean was released, and i fell in love with jack sparrow, which is like. questionable at best, considering he was kinda grimy and dirty, but…” but she had a type, apparently, and captain jack sparrow fit into it. it wasn’t exactly something she boasted about, but she wasn’t as ashamed of that fact as she should probably be. but she could fantasize about whoever she wanted, because at the end of the day, no one had ever wanted to stick around her for the long haul - not in any way that mattered, at least. “god, yes, please. we’ll just judge all of them on how pretty their faces are, which means jazz-bear is definitely the top of the list for me. followed closely by paul.”

          a snortle escapes him at winter’s admission but cyrus can’t really say he’s surprised by that from what he already knows of his friend’s taste in men. “the whole grimy and dirty isn’t my thing because i love me men who smell so good you can’t stop thinking about it for days, ya know? but depp made that look work somehow so i can’t blame you for that.” he shakes his head at it. “hmmm, i dunno, jasper’s too much of a pretty boy for me to place him at the top of the list, though the same title can be applied to edward and i feel like we’ve agreed that i had a major crush on him back then. nowadays, i’m definitely leanin’ more towards paul, too.” though no one, fictional or not, could compare to his actual boyfriend in his mind. “oh, and alice? i remember thinkin’ she was the prettiest girl i had ever seen.”
