Why May?
Have you ever wondered why the Indy 500 is in May? Or why so much time is dedicated to practice during the month of May?
The answer to this is rooted in the beginning of the Speedway itself.
The Speedway opened in August 1909 and the Speedway management had jammed the weekend full of races — short 5 and 10 mile races as well as longer 100, 200 and 300 mile races to try and keep people busy. The first weekend nearly killed the Speedway before it even started but that’s a whole separate topic.
So while they had to shift gears and pave the track with bricks, the Speedway management did not bother to tinker with the way race weekends were set up. They held a race weekend over the Decoration Day weekend (which is now known as Memorial Day) as well as on the Fourth of July Weekend.
Attendance was not nearly what the Speedway management wanted, though the May date had been better for attendance — especially because the May date happened to coincide with a two week break that farmers took.
The Founders had already sunk an enormous amount of money into the Speedway and they were businessmen after all, so the Speedway needed to turn a profit. So the management and founders went to the drawing board.
It is not known who came up with idea of the 500 mile race first. Carl Fisher’s ex-wife credited him while James Allison’s ex-wife credited him. We do know that Carl Fisher had already suggested a 1,000 mile or 24 hour race so it’s possible that perhaps James Allison suggested 500 miles to compromise with Carl (but again, nobody is really sure).
And 500 miles was a radical idea — at this point, to my knowledge, it was the first time a motorsport event would even attempt to run 500 miles without stopping.
The Speedway held races over Labor Day weekend and the attendance was even more dismal and so, the plan for the 500 mile race was announced shortly thereafter.
While the practices now may seem excessive, they actually are minimal compared to what they had in the early days of the Indy 500. The track opened usually at some point in April, weather permitting and was open essentially as long as it was daylight. Most out of town drivers arrived at the beginning of May, providing themselves with ample time to tune their cars (which was especially helpful when things would break and they’d have to ship parts from New York etc).
It also provided drivers with an ample opportunity to acclimate to the track. Not only is IMS a difficult track to drive on but in early days, motorsport was seen more of a hobby than a career and there were numerous drivers that would only run this race in the year so the practice time gave them plenty of time to get back into racing shape.
As the cars have become more specialized and reliable and most of the drivers are full-time drivers (or oval specialists), the need for a whole month of track time isn’t quite as necessary (plus the Indy GP has been added in)
Ever wondered about something that happened with the Indy 500? Why something is the way it is? Wondered who a person is and why people talk about them? Let me know!

Someone Asked…Are You Struggling With Your Judaism?
I struggle not with my Judaism, but with others twisting Judaism to fit their goals. Taking Sacred words and making them profane. Taking magic and grinding it beneath their feet. Telling Jews they are not Jewish for not falling in line.
My Judaism will hold me in my last breath, lay me to rest in my shroud, carry my soul to the next life. My Judaism will burn brighter in these moments when people wish it will die out.
Those who wish my Judaism to die will always be disappointed. I understand the feeling of deep betrayal. I know your loss. Your grief. Our anger. Our rage. Our sanctified fury.
Remember the words of Jewish wisdom: ours souls are like a candle. As they flicker and dance, so do we. Questioning is normal. Burning brighter at times and smaller in others is part of the process.
Know that we cannot relinquish Judaism to those who wish to turn it to the idolatry of nationalism. Of blood shed. Of horror.
We know of Her magic and wisdom and love. We know of the words written and whispered and carried by those not praised by the regimes in power.
It is okay to struggle. There is no shame in that.
