August 1913.
During a trip to Dorset, UK, amateur photographer Mervyn O’Gorman snaps colorful autochrome pictures of Christina*, the daughter of a family friend, philosopher Edwyn Robert Bevan. (In the background, the iconic landmark Durdle Door can be spotted.)
You’d think someone had taken photos of actress Mia Wasikowska and artificially aged them. The photos have the ethereal atmosphere of a dream.

Oh, by the way—behold a photo of my dog, Tommie, taken at the same location 101 years later, in September 2014.

“I was a woman with a plan. I knew the only thing, that could really stopped me, in my opinion, was to fall in love.
I went in, at lunch, to put my books in the locker and I got to the doorway and … I saw John Cassavetes, and I thought : oh, oh damn! No, no, no. No!
That’s just exactly what I don’t want.”
Gena Rowlands on her first meeting with John Cassavetes

Dante and Virgil Meeting the Shades of Francesca da Rimini and Paolo, Ary Scheffer , 1851, Cleveland Museum of Art: Modern European Painting and Sculpture
Based on The Divine Comedy, Dante’s epic poem of the 1300s, this painting depicts Dante and the ancient Roman poet Virgil encountering the souls of Paolo and Francesca on a visit to Hell. Although in love with Paolo, Francesca was forced to marry his deformed brother for political reasons. When the jilted husband discovered the lovers embracing, he murdered them, apparently consigning them to Hell due to their adulterous affair.
