The night parrot (Pezoporus occidentalis) is a small parrot endemic to the continent of Australia. It is well known as being one of the most elusive and mysterious birds in the world, with no known sightings of the bird between 1912 and 1979, leading to speculation that it was extinct. The first photographic and video evidence of a live individual was publicly confirmed in July 2013. Another live individual was photographed in March 2017.
so there is a disabled kea called bruce at willowbank wildlife reserve in christchurch, aotearoa nz who is missing the upper half of his beak from an unknown accident
this little dude has taken his challenges and absolutely innovated
as well as soft foods he's given, he's figured out how he can still eat hard foods by pressing them up against hard surfaces
what is even COOLER is that he's figured out how to pick up pebbles and use them to preen himself! he specifically and intentionally picks pebbles of certain sizes to use them to preen - this is especially cool because kea don't regularly display tool use in the wild, so he has specifically learned how to navigate his disability
the purple-crowned lorikeet is a small lorikeet species found in australia - the only lorikeet species native to the western portion of the continent. the species primarily feeds on young blossoms, but also occasionally feeds on nectars and fruits. the species makes an unlined nest in a tree hollow, sometimes nesting in colonies. males and females are similar, but females have paler ear coverts and a lack of crimson markings.
not to get on my soapbox again but every “cute animal video compilation!!” i’ve seen lately is literally just. *wild animal in somebody’s house* *animal that is clearly in distress* *somebody harassing their pet for views* *another wild animal in somebody’s house* *”””rescue””” animal being treated as a pet* *somebody feeding or interacting with wildlife* *another animal that is clearly in distress* *two animals that should not be anywhere near each other being allowed to interact* *yet another animal that is clearly in distress* with maybe like one or two cute dog videos thrown in
I almost forgot to mention: this woman came into the penguin enclosure with a KESTREL??? I said “oh my god is that an American Kestrel?” and she said “Yes! She was outside doing raptor education for the kids, but she doesn’t like to get rained on.”
That rabbit/hare post is messing me up. I’d thought they were synonyms. Their development and social behavior are all different. They can’t even interbreed. They don’t have the same number of chromosomes. Dogs, wolves, jackals, and coyotes can mate with each other and have fertile offspring but rabbits and hares cant even make infertile ones bc they just die in the womb. Wack.
Baby bird season is incoming and I’d like to remind everyone that birds do not have a significant sense of smell. Bird parents will not reject birdlets because you have handled them.
If you see smol birbs with few or no feathers on the ground, you can safely put them back into their nest, bird parents will still care for them.
If you see smol birbs with some or most feathers on the ground, please leave them there, as bird parents are probably nearby watching and feeding.
this is an interest check on a pair of soft enamel pins. they are 1.5" each, and gold plated soft enamel. each one features either a group of budgies, or a trio of cockatiels.
these would be a great gift for a bird-loving family member, a beloved exotic vet, or really, anyone who enjoys the company of small, feathered noise making machines.
each pin would be $12.99 USD plus shipping. i can ship internationally.
each pin would be in a limited quantity of 50, with possible reprints as part of a much bigger set. if this post (and the twitter interest check) get enough attention, they will be made and preorders opened!
reblog or reply to this post, and boost the one on twitter, too! all profits go to taking care of my flock.
