This is a complete translation of the Takeuchi Naoko-related texts from the artbook 5-nin no amajin/purojin ten / 5 Amateurs Turned Pro Exhibit, available for download at Miss Dream. It contains a long 50-questions interview, as well as Takeuchi’s comments on the 20 pieces of color art she chose to include in the exhibit. It would probably be best to read this in tandem with the scans available at Miss Dream, so you can look at the art while reading her comments.

Oh no the second half of this post is me coming to the realiztion that manga Mamoru wasn't mix macthing tuxedo ettiquette at all, I realized hes just wearing a specifc type of tuxedo i had never heard of until recently.
its just me acknowledging Naoko's knowlrdge in high end fashion
We always talk shit about Mamorus bad fashion and usually think his manga fashion style is very decent (besides the cow print anyway lol)
But listen the boy literally cant dress right he doesnt even wear a tuxedo right, theres 3 types for specific occassions with specific etiquette and our boy is wearing all 3 styles at once what a mess.
imagine newspaper articles and forums just clowning in his drip lmaoooooo

Oh he's not technically breaking any rules, Tuxedo Mask's outfit isnt a traditional kind of tuxedo at all. Its a military Mess suit most likely based on the formal attire worn by the French Military! The uniform is crazy similar to Tuxedo Masks whole drip. Theyre also worn by royalty! Mamoru is a prince and a king!
Funny enough, King Endymion actually wears a traditional style tuxedo, with coat tails and everything. Endymion seems more associated with the coattails, so Mamoru on the Kanzenban covers probably isn't Mamoru at all but Prince Endymion!
Tuxedo Mask's outfit isnt an outfit, it's a military uniform- just like the senshi!
I think he has coat tails in Crystal's design cus Sakou used Kanzenban as a reference- Cus he's never actually depicted with having coattails in the actual pages or artbook outside of King Endymion. Or maybe cus mess jackets and white tie tuxedos share a similar waist design, Sakou and gang thiught he was wearing a white tie tux and probably didn't know about Mess Jackets, at least not by name.

#i mean hes still breaking some form of dress code#its like a mix of black tie and mess suit#in the manga this is way more apparent his jacket doesnt have coattails#and mess jackets also are like white tie tuxedos but they dint have coattails!#his double breasted buttons and lapel also follow the same pattern as the french military mess suit#the tux is his sailor suit! quite literally#i mean again its meant to be worn at very formal events its the most formal you can get and hss just out in daylight in it#and thats valid of him#but yea! hes not wearing your average tuxedo. mamoru is really just dripped out of his fucking mind#sailorcrisis and i were discussing his design and i went in another rabbit hole and found the name of his jacket#and that became another rabbit hole#i think naoko saw the opourutnity to give prince Endymion an actjal outfit by giving him his own tuxedo design for the covers#cus the only time we see mamoru in kanzenban hes with princess serenity and not as tuxedo mask!#she might have given mamoru a white tux jacket in later artbook pages tho i have to look but i dont remember it being the case#mamoru chiba#tuxedo mask#nikki talks#maybe mess suit was the intended dssign from naoko if so damn she knows her stuff

hi :') i was clearing my likes from years ago when i came across some posts of yours which reminded me: there's people like me who preferred the smc 1&2 art style! i dont like the newer design choices at all, they make smc look like any other generic anime whereas these amazing people's designs (https://www.tumblr.com/crystalbehindthescenes/162796600707/i-really-liked-the-glossy-lips-and-shiny-shiny?source=share) made it unique and resembled takeuchi's style so much. i really wish we could have seen all the characters portrayed in that way </3 btw sorry for this, just wanted to vent i guess, i hope you dont mind lol! have a nice day 💕

He already has a transformation on screen (albeit short, and the live action one is more a parody), and hes technically Sailor Earth by proxy of sailor crystal. Not to mention, Mamoru even has his own commuciator watch just like the senshi!
Not to mention, his name Tuxedo Kamen is based on tokusatsus like Kamen Rider who all have some form of henshin phrase!
So... Should he have a phrase like the senshi?

Sailor Moon Crystal has generally been a messy experience with being faithful to Naoko Takeuchi's original design. Sakou didn't deserve as much criticism though her design was flawed by design execution. Takahashi is generally ugly art with smooth animation. Tadano is barely close to resembling Takeuchi's art style and even then Crystal didn't need to look like the manga at that being the point in which Sailor Moon Crystal should've had its own distinct art style.
I agree with most except for distinct style. You could argue s3 is a distinct style (it doesnt follow the manga at all and its takashi's style at its most basic imo) and like you said it's ugly as hell.
Tadano's style is just the 90s style (which in s1 and R's case is pretty close to the manga, just with early 90s elements. thats what the 90s anime style is.) but way more cuter but like modern standard cute, so snub dot noses flatter colors ect.
I think Naokos style does deserve to be animated. Her style started this in the 1st place, and people do like it. Sailor Moon wouldnt be the same with a new distinct style as we saw with S3. The 90s anime is also in its own right close, just with style trends in 90s anime. Tadano took that old design (itohs specifically imo) and gave it modern ekemnts ie the snub noses and flatter textures.
There's just now like 40 styles under Naoko now compared to back in the 90s that you cant just Pick one and expect it to be accurate to a single page or art book. Also Naoko's style would be very unique against other cuter, snub nose, styles. why shouldn't it be animated?
the trick is striking a balance between her styles, choosing the right colors, and time in the industry. ..and maybe a dfferent studio but that wouldn't change much imo.

#im looking at bebop and the same movments are there but its like#its like carole and tuesdayand other shows wanna do these same movements (or copy shida)#but with way more line smears and way less drawings or somsthing#i had theories that anime animators animate their usual way#on twos 3s 4s ect sct#but that method works best with 24/25(PAL)fps#i heard anime fps has jumped to 30 so its like how do divide that into 3s ect#again just a theory#cus i cant blame it on digital stuff#have you seen hironori tanaka's older stuff in the early 2000s? thats digital era anime#or even in Crystal (besides chronos typhoon fuck toei for that)#its all still solid with some depth in the characters anatomy (as little as we see of him i mean)#it doesnt always feel twitchy or stiff#even in his older precure stuff#but like post 2010s something flopped#so like whats going on?#i mean i kinda know whats going on i have an idea we all know its indhstry overwork#aaaah#but yea its not grabbin me to the point its kinda making me nauseous
