Just a reminder: Heathenry does have a term for smoke-cleansing. Recaning. To recan. (Or reocan, in Old West Saxon.) This is cleansing via smoke, whether through incense or a bundle of herbs put together for a particular type of cleansing. Juniper and mugwort are both favorites for this. In case you’re wondering how to pronounce it, it sounds like reekening. The word “reeks” is actually derived from it, signifying a potent smell. For Old Norse fans, this seems to be related to the work reykr. In case you were wondering, Reykjavik in Iceland translates to “Smoky Bay”.

Tomato Calyx:
Tumblr media
The calyx is the star-looking green part of tomato flowers, which forms a protective cusp around the buds. After the fertilized flower forms a tomato, you will find these still attached.
They can be used in spells for:
- Love related workings, including sex, beauty, and other Venus associations, as both tomato plants and the color green are associated with this.
- Protection from illness and negative energy for the house, family, and self. When hung at the front of the entrance of the home or at a window, it is said to repel evil.
- Prosperity/Wealth is another common association.
- Other forms of Abundance in life, especially if they're from tomatoes you grew yourself.
- as these are from tomatoes I grew, I also use them for manifestation and dedication, an extra oomph to my intent.
- a calyx with 5 sepals can be used with the same symbolism as a pentagram.
If you're careful to remove the pedicle from the center, you'll have an opening like this:
Tumblr media
From which you can tie the calyxes together or hang them up. They are also easier to press-dry this way for later use. If you let them dry without pressing, they will curl up and not maintain their star-like shape.
Culinary uses:
Your first thought may be "isn't tomato part of the nightshade family??? Isn't it super unsafe to eat the leaves??? Tomato IS part of the nightshade family, and contains the toxic alkaloids tomatine and solanine. But they're in very, very low concentrations, even in the leaves. You would have to eat about a pound and a half to be affected.
But still, this part of the tomato plant doesn't do much regarding flavor. Though I like the visual effect of it. They don't have a strong aroma like the leaves of the plant do, and they taste simply grassy. If you include it in your recipe for magical purposes, you won't have ruined your dish at all, but otherwise they don't add much.

Fun little thing about medieval medicine.
So there’s this old German remedy for getting rid of boils. A mix of eggshells, egg whites, and sulfur rubbed into the boil while reciting the incantation and saying five Paternosters. And according to my prof’s friend (a doctor), it’s all very sensible. The eggshells abrade the skin so the sulfur can sink in and fry the boil. The egg white forms a flexible protective barrier. The incantation and prayers are important because you need to rub it in for a certain amount of time.
It’s easy to take the magic words as superstition, but they’re important.

Always keep immigrants in your thoughts and prayers. Those who are considering crossing the border(s), those who have started their journey, and those who have made it to the other side. May their journey be a safe one. May they face no more violence. May they have food and water to get them through the long days and nights. And may they be able to find what/who they’re looking for when they arrive to the other side of the border.

Public Transportation Should be Free to the Public.
1) it’s already subsidized heavily so it wouldn’t cost that much more to just make it free
2) eliminates the need for fare enforcement which has been committing human rights abuses against mostly poor people of color and people with disabilities
3) would increase ridership and decrease global climate change
4) bus passes are like $100+ in some places and that can be the difference between eating or not eating for over 30% of Americans

Aphrodite wants you to love your body! Your female body, your male body, your nonbinary body. Your body is a gift even if it doesn’t always feel like it and she sees you as beautiful. Her love is limitless and so let yourself be consumed by it.
