Balls of goodness
Old froggo is craving yet another local hawker dish this time round. Chicken rice is everywhere but where can you find stalls which mould their rice into chewy balls of goodness? The Hainanese chicken rice ball is famous in Malacca but is hard to find in Singapore.
Tumblr media
I used to frequent this stall located at Braddell near SPH but it has since closed down for good. These balls are really bouncy as the owner once demonstrated by throwing a kneaded ball on the plate - yes it didn’t break into pieces. Well, I guess the trend of traditional hawker food becoming extinct is inevitable. Maybe I should collate a list of extinct and endangered hawker food in Singapore.
Something has to be done before our hawker culture fades into oblivion.

Hawker Lost & Found
Being an avid lover of Wanton noodles, Uncle Froggo nearly died from shock  few years back when he heard that the famous 国记云吞面 at Lavender Food Square had closed down. He had to make do with CP wantons until the highly-rated stall sprung up in its new location at Bistro 8 coffeeshop, 30 Foch Road.
Tumblr media
The stall is helmed by elderly hawkers who have perfected the art of Wanton noodle-making - namely the holy trinity of springy noodles, savory chili sauce, and fresh dumplings. The noodles still tasted delicious without the strong alkaline taste. However, the char siew tasted pretty normal compared to some old school charcoal grilled ones.

Everything here starts from $5 which is very reasonable considering that rental and living costs have skyrocketed since. I don’t understand how Singaporeans can complain about paying more than $3 for hawker food but yet willing to pay $15 for a typical bowl of ‘Japanese’ ramen or ‘Italian’ pasta. I expect our traditional hawker food to die out in 10 years time because no sane adult will put in so much hardwork for such a low profit margin. Therefore, enjoy while it last folks!
