Being Villagers
Based off this story prompt/fill (X) where you are born with a designation like Hero, Demon King, Blacksmith, etc.
Your name is Dolly. You are a Villager. You, as well as anyone, know what that means.
——————-.
You are sixteen and it is your first day at school.
Your first lesson is that Villagers are the only ones who start so late.
“Because there’s not much to be taught,” a boy says. His clothes are made of finer cloth than your mother’s wedding dress and his hair is as shiny as the brass buckles on his shoes. He grins at you, as proud as a peacock in front of half the class. “Don’t need to ask what your Destiny is, do I?”
You don’t know why he’s singling you out. A quick glance back into the classroom shows the rest of the students sitting at their desks with their heads low. They’re Villagers too. Most of you are. That’s why there isn’t anything special enough about any of you. You look back at the boy. “…are you going to ask me something else?”
“What?”
“If you don’t need to ask me my Destiny,” you say slowly, “do you need to ask me something else?”
“I don’t need to ask anything from a Villager!” the boy cries. He jabs a finger at his own bicep where his mark lies under cloth. “I’m a Lord!”
“Okay,” you say. The other kids behind him are frowning at you. Some of them are Villagers too, but different from you. They’re the children of merchants which is a different sort of destiny altogether. “I need to run some errands for my mother. Will you let me pass?”

Incredible power move to make one of the most beloved crpgs ever made using a modified dnd 5e system, make a ton of money and shit on most AAA game studios in the process, then say “cool. Anyway fuck dnd 5e and wizzards of the coast. We’re doing our own thing now.”

"this is a favorite memory because it was one of the first times my dad saw me as a grownup and engaged with me intellectually as one."
THIS. This right here is why I have always, and will continue to, speak to children with the same respect as I speak to peers with. And while I keep the content relevant and age appropriate, I don't dumb down anything for them because children will ask if I say a word they don't know, generally, once they realize that they won't be judged or condescended to. I suspect that is part of why kids gravitate toward me, despite me being a bit gruff in tone & facial expression sometimes.
The other part is that I'm basically a cartoon witch who lives in the woods, knows loads about plants, and can befriend nearly any animal. (The cartoon bit comes from the fact that I'm deeply whimsical, have bonkers hair, and have the movements of a cartoon character due to my Ehlers-danlos syndrome.)
TL;DR: Kids are people & should be spoken to as such. It's not fucking difficult.
a favorite memory:
when i was in fifth grade, we read a book in school where a young girl in prehistory finds a dolphin skeleton. and i was so taken in by the description of the bones, how there were fingers in the fins, that i came home to my dad and told him "i think that when humans came out of the oceans, dolphins did, too, but they went back in."
my dad went upstairs and came back with an issue of analog magazine, the sci-fi digest he read religiously, and handed it to me.
"here," he said. "you're ready for this."

i woke up in the middle of the night recently and immediately assumed that the 3:00 on my phone screen referred to PM and not AM. i started to freak out for sleeping in so late, and further so because of how dark and still the world was at three in the afternoon. no one was even posting on social media, had they all heard about my bad sleep habits? my grogged up mind eventually landed on a course of action, which was to open google and search "did something happen?"

i must not afternoon nap. afternoon nap is the mind-killer. afternoon nap is the little death that brings total obliteration. i will face my afternoon sleepy tired and permit it to pass over and through me. and when it has gone i will turn the inner eye to see its path. where the afternoon sleepy tired has gone there will be nothing. only i will remain

My test run for today (April 16 2024): Avenged Sevenfold - Beast and The Harlot (a band I listen to specifically because Jimmy 'Rev' Sullivan was an absolute MONSTER on drums)
and then this was second because I miss professor brothers.
