This is just a personal opinion, but I'll leave it here and you can decide what you want to do with it:
I don't follow the crowd with the 1941 scene just after Crowley handed Aziraphale the books he saved being the moment Aziraphale fell in love, or realized he was in love, with Crowley.
I don't buy it, because Aziraphale has ALWAYS looked at Crowley with hearts in his eyes.
Nope... Personally, I think that look in 1941 was because it was at that moment that Aziraphale realized it was actually possible Crowley might love him. Up until that night, all of Crowley's little acts had been passed of as part of "the game" or "the Arrangement" or brushed off as nothing by Crowley. But in 1941, Crowley did several pretty amazing things in quick succession, that simply had no other explanation but he cares about Aziraphale:
He deliberately set foot on consecrated ground with the sole purpose of keeping Aziraphale from getting blown sky-high by a bomb, or shot by Nazis.
He stayed there, in the church, with Aziraphale, knowing a bomb was coming, trusting the angel to protect him, with a full, open font of Holy Water very nearby.
In the midst of all of this, he had the forethought to save the case full of books that even Aziraphale had forgotten about in the mess of everything, simply because he knew Aziraphale would be distraught if they were destroyed.
All of this would have added up to Aziraphale to a sense of wonder, his heartbeat running faster as he contemplated the maybe, it might me possible, that Crowley might at least be capable of caring about him, and maybe, someday, that might turn into love.
That's what I've always read in that expression. No telling if I'm right, but it's what I'm going with.

Dear people who think Aziraphael doesn't care about people and is some kind of capitalist overlord, are we watching the same show?
Aziraphael who, literally did not collect rent from his tenants for months and months and had no plans to start. "But he did it for his records," they say. "Selfish," they cry. No just no he did it cause Maggie said she would leave even though she didn't want to leave. He did it for Maggie.
Aziraphael who, took his concerns for the 'Job permit' to heaven, before he ever knew the kids were in danger. And then hearing they were in fact in DANGER took it to the archangels, and then returned to earth determined to stop Crawley from hurting them (not knowing our lovely snakeboy would NEVER).
Aziraphael who witnessed Jesus' crucifixion for no other reason (as far as i know) than pure sympathy for the man.
Aziraphael who gave up his sword and got in trouble with actual GOD over it because it was gonna be "a cold night and she's already with child". That isn't about humanity as a concept. It's for these two people he has looked after since they drew breath, who would be out in the cold and dark on their own for the very first time.
Aziraphael who despite being very much against suicide gives Crowley the holy water because he cares for him and doesn't want him to get in 'trouble' with the heist. Puts aside all those feelings of losing his friend and the only being in the universe that gets him(the only other angel/demon to have 'gone native').
Selfish?!

i think i just learned more about dt's process and character insight by listening to him rave about anthony hopkins' performance in the remains of the day than i have in months of doing a deep dive into his lore. love these little glimpses of incredibly skilled and experienced artist shining through under the veneer of oh i don't know i just show up and do my thing.
hard same. I am enamored with this clips I am snorting it.
