AS SAID BY COMMANDER SHEPARD  *  assorted dialogue from the mass effect trilogy
it's a big stupid jellyfish.
i don't know what i'd do without you.
you're working too hard.
i'll let you get back to work.
i'm sorry, i'm getting a lot of bullshit on this line.
if i'm walking into hell, i want someone i trust at my side.
oh, now it's personal.
you think we're going to lose?
you'll never be alone.
no matter what happens here... you know i love you. i always will.
i haven't forgotten our time together.
i want you. i want someone i can trust.
i don't know what we're gonna find in there, but i'm not going to lie to you. it's not going to be easy.
i've had enough of your snide insinuations.
it's all just part of the job.
i'm getting a little worried about you, [name].
this shop discriminates against the poor!
consider me officially offended.
you know, [name], if you're not comfortable with this, it's okay. i'm not trying to pressure you.
when should i book the room?
can one of you clarify?
they want to know what we're made of? i say we show them, on our terms.
i should be going.
it's been a long journey, and no one is coming out without scars.
i guess i'm on my own. again.
you don't need to hurt him to get what you want.
you have got to be kidding me.
if i didn't have authorization, how did i get in? you see any other doors?
make me proud. make yourselves proud.
what's that you're drinking?
i just saved your ass.
be alive with me tonight.
sometimes things don't work out the way we'd like. that's just life.
i'm the only thing standing between you and a hole in the head.
i don't argue with plants.
[name], this doesn't have to be hard.
get the hell off my ship.
are you naturally this bitchy, or is it just me?
what are we going to tell them? i had a bad dream?
good times are over.
it's not too late. you don't have to go through with this.
one way or another, we're taking this bitch down.
i told them where to shove it.
you getting soft on me, [name]?
we could test your reach... and my flexibility.
this war has brought us pain, and suffering... and loss.
i assume everything's going well up here?
i don't know what drugs you're on, but stay back and i won't shoot you.
i thought you were a friend of mine. you've got the same suit.
sounds like he needs to get shot.
i've been getting that a lot.
look around you. you're not in this fight alone.
i don't have time to babysit you, [name]. find a way to deal with it.
have you got a minute to talk?
here i am. exactly where i want to be.
never hesitate when you've got the enemy in your sights.
give me what i want. now!
lay it on me, [name]. i love bad news.
i should go.
hell, [name], you were always ugly.
i hadn't heard that. is there anything i can do?
someone piss in your coffee today?
how do i shut this thing up?
i can't promise how things will work out... but i missed you, [name]. i thought about you a lot.
everything we've ever known... it's all hanging by a thread.
something on your mind?
maybe you're right. maybe we can't win this.
keep it up, tough guy. you'll leave in a bag.
you kill people because you think they're beneath you; they're in your way. i kill people because they leave me no choice.
i don't know if i'll be coming down here for these talks anymore.
can we ever be ready for a battle like this?

not even her ship.
she doesn’t have a ship anymore.
marie’s certain the biobed monitors will read the way that, so much more than the gorn eggs lodged in her body, the thought of the cayuga sends her heartbeat racing, shallows her breathing. no, she can’t think about that, or her crew. her voice is tight, soft, as she rejects christine’s reassurances of only a few minutes and I’ll be back: ❛ just go. ❜
it will take however long it takes.
since she awoke, since she pieced together what had happened and what would happen, marie has found this to be the worst of it: doing nothing. she’s not a problem solver by nature, not really. she does not solve problems, she evaluates them, takes the messy grays of reality and binds them against black and white law.
still, the itching is worse when she has no distraction, and she does like to have a purpose. lying still while others fret over her leaves her with nothing but her own thoughts. how it itches.
as christine works, she closes her eyes, tries to focus not upon the bloodstained walls of their makeshift shelter upon parnassus beta, nor upon the green-accented white walls of the cayuga, or the many faces of her crew — her friends, but rather upon something further distant and far safer: hiking with her grandfather at mount rainier as a child. her memories slipped way from her, overpowered by that which was far more recent.
❛⠀⠀⠀that's not something i'm worried about.⠀ ⠀ ❜ ⠀⠀ ⠀ christine has a lot of duties on this ship: keep the medbay running, treat patients, help the science team when required, do something weird every week so erica can get all her jokes out on her and not on the rest of the bridge staff. it's a full schedule, barely human, but she makes it work.
what isn’t in her roster is security. what happens after is not something she is worried about; only considering it in terms of the development of the gestation. if the security team is worried about it — a stray thought goes out to la’an, a prayer on her lips — then they haven’t made their worries known to her. probably because they know she doesn’t care.
as long as there is hope, christine refuses to see marie as anything but a patient. a friend.
she is not dangerous.
she is not dangerous.
❛⠀⠀⠀ah, see. you are fine. ordering me about, and this isn't even in your ship! you captains, all the same,⠀ ⠀ ❜ ⠀ ⠀ she says with a small tut, eyebrows slightly raised. fine, have it your way. ⠀ ⠀ ❛⠀⠀⠀it should only take a few minutes. stay still, i'll be back.⠀ ⠀ ❜ ⠀

he does not need to share details for her to piece together the rest, to know that his future does not comprise peaceful rest. after all, the lives they live here are not easy, are not safe. that is a reality that looms over them at all times. some more than others. ❛ you could have told me. ❜ should have told her, maybe. they’ve known each other for long enough that surely she deserved this much of the truth.
such recriminations will do neither of them any good, and she has promised herself not to cast blame.
she doesn’t know what else to say, though. behind all the other questions, those of how and what and why, lingers one that makes her want to pace to the other side of the room and force them back to the question of what he wants. the way his voice breaks, however, renders that entirely too cruel option, and though comfort is nearly the last thing she wants to offer with her own anger still simmering, prone to boil at a moment’s notice, and with the issue that had led them here still unresolved, she draws closer instead to take his arm, squeeze his hand.
❛ who else knows? ❜ she asks instead, praying that the answer is someone, someone whom he’s trusted enough to share not only the abstraction of a grim future but also the details, to whom he’s entrusted his grief and his doubts and all else that comes with whatever he experienced. the way he hasn’t with her.
"It was..." he swallows, struggling to speak. Tears well; he isn't surprised, Chris has spent too long ignoring them. "It was horrible," he manages. He doesn't make a distinction between the act of searching for his friend or the moment he's hoped to never have to share with Marie. She likely knows, anyway.
Eyes dart, as if he's searching around the room for the right combination of words. After a few seconds, he settles on staring down at his hands. They're not as scarred as they could be; not yet. Unsure, if the move is cowardly or comforting, Chris only knows that the simple act makes it slightly easier to breathe, to summon the truth he's tried to burry.
"I saw my future, Marie. I - I felt it," he tells her, voice cracking. The pain, the fear. Unavoidable, unchangeable. Foolishly, he thought avoiding the captaincy might negate his sealed fate. The same reasons he accepted the crystal, though, were the ones that had him returning to the Enterprise - dedicated to service, to commitment, to his crew. "There is no changing it."

it is not truly funny, yet she laughs anyways, finding something of the preposterous to all of this. it is easier to laugh than to face the reality of sitting and doing nothing while nursing an injured shoulder that she is determined to hold perfectly still. ❛ that depends on how cocky they are; if I was convinced my jail cell could hold anyone, I wouldn’t expect them to escape. ❜
marie merely plays devil’s advocate: it may well be the best option, but marie likes to be idle as little as the rest of her colleagues. sitting and waiting… she trusts her crew implicitly, holds greater faith in their abilities than her own. ❛ they could at least have given us something to read. ❜
"Mm, not the last one," he answers. It might be a slight towards her profession, but simply sitting here and waiting for the legal scales to shift in their favor is too passive. Out of there hands entirely here on a planet with only loose ties to the federation. Whatever the result, it won't be in their favor.
"We sit here hoping our crews will rescue us," Jim tells her. "We let them," their captors, "believe we're helpless without their aid. Fool them into thinking we won't fight back." He shifts, leaning heavily against the wall as he gets comfortable. Perceptions are as sharp as any weapon, strong as any tool. "Let them get comfortable."

❛ you should be. ❜ such was how i went, after all. soldiers to fall into line at their commander’s orders, to wait to be told what to do and to do what they are told. chain of command exists for a reason; not for nothing had it endured for millennia, manifesting in countless civilizations and morphing as it has from military to corporate to exploratory and more.
marie had never been the commanding officer to demand blind obedience. she would not have survived the last war, if she had. marie possesses no illusions that she will survive this one if she starts now.
sometimes, however, she must draw the line and hold her course. ❛ I will need you here. if anything goes wrong, I need you looking after the crew. you can’t do that if you’re in the middle of trouble with me. ❜ she lets the corner of her lip curl in wry humor that is, all considered, largely unsuitable for their present discussion. it fades swiftly. ❛ I’ll make it an order, if I have to, la’an. ❜
It wasn't hard to fathom the root of the captain's uncomplicated conclusion: that by walking in seemingly unblenching solitude, whatever the outcome of her mission, the only life at risk would be her own.
La'an couldn't fault her for that; couldn't reasonably deny her the executive freedom to make such a decision — not when Captain Pike might have done the same to spare his crew an unnecessary loss if given no other path. Not when she'd once borne such a burdensome responsibility herself, at the brink between Federation and Klingon space, all for the sake of a lost, scared young girl's life.
But this wasn't so desperate, so horrifyingly bereft of the liberty to do anything but stride into the jaws of death alone. Whatever her rank insignia suggested, Captain Batel couldn't dissuade her from making her own choice.
Tumblr media
" You could use another pair of eyes. " Someone who'd been alone and scared before — who'd been prey before — and had struggled out the other side, to stay vigilant; intensively so. " I'm not asking for permission, captain. "

I'm hoping that some time away gives me my motivation back, as I do miss writing with you all! I am only taking my ipad, so I will only be able to post uncut and iconless replies. ❛ especially scooby-do. imagine learning the laws of physics — or human anatomy — from any cartoon and thinking we can be bonked on the head with great force and survive. they'd start killing us by accident. ❜ truth told, it's always unsettled her, the great liberties cartoons take with violence, with distorting the way the body moves, with allowing that which would break someone. agonizingly.
she does not repress the shudder which courses the length of her spine at the thought.
Tumblr media
with a snort, marie remarks, ❛ I was about to say I think I might rather be dealing with greek mythology, but... I don't think I want anyone taking inspiration from the gods. ❜ the heroes might be tolerable, though they definitely don't need a trojan war 2.0, especially not conducted on a galactic scale. ❛ but suggesting they're not smart enough and convincing them we are bored... those seem like two sides of the same coin to me. bored because they're not smart enough to pull it off? how about disinterested? will disinterested induce monologuing, or only spur them on to taking actions we'd rather they not? ❜
disinterest comes close to the mark of their current behavior already, considering that their conversation to all appearances ignores their unwanted antagonists and, frankly, exhibits an ongoing lack of true concern that must be visible in their body language if indeed their "hosts" had learned from the backlog of human cinema.
❛⠀⠀⠀even scooby-doo? ⠀ ⠀ ❜ ⠀ ⠀ this situation could be a hell of a lot worse, when you think about it. the hero defeating the villain by the end of the story is a trademark of the genre; scarecrow can plot a seemingly perfect plan, mastermind the hero's downfall to the last detail. it will never work.
their victory might be guaranteed by their choice of inspiration.
that is — if in this situation, marie is batman.
Tumblr media
❛⠀⠀⠀always. that’s the trick, wait for them to talk themselves out of a victory. if we are going by comic book tropes, ⠀ ⠀ ❜ ⠀ ⠀ a phrase christine never thought she’d hear herself say, ⠀❛⠀⠀⠀we either have to goad them into revealing their masterful plan, by insinuating we don’t think they are smart enough to do this. or create a situation in which they think we are bored. either way, we gotta make them feel stupid, that’s their — and forgive the mixed metaphors, — achilles heel. ⠀ ⠀ ❜ ⠀

this time, she doesn’t laugh, though she might have. once, she’d considered herself cut from a different cloth than the starfleet captains who passed through the starbases on which she served — and whose medical officers never made a secret of their disgruntlement. she had merely rolled her eyes at her own captain upon the korolev each time she received a notification from the medical team requesting that marie arrange the captain’s arrival to medbay at her earliest convenience.
she had thought herself different until the captaincy had been placed upon her shoulders. until there was a war. then, she understood.
❛ it helps that I’m very much in danger of becoming a danger to everyone on this ship. ❜ this was no time for bullshit about being fine. even if she has been no less guilty, under other circumstances, than the rest of her counterparts.
but to christine’s question, she merely shakes her head. what she needs, she doubts the nurse will allow her. she needs a promise that this won’t go on longer than is safe ( though marie worries how closely they already press that deadline ), that in the end christine won’t allow sentimentality or the stubbornness so characteristic of enterprise’s crew ( so characteristic of starfleet ) to muddy her decision-making. that argument, however, will only consume what they already lack: time. instead, marie merely instructs, ❛ don’t waste time. ❜
christine doesn’t mind the laugh. welcomes it even. even if it’s bitter, if it lacks the warmth she saw in her face less than twenty-four hours ago, it means she is still kicking, that there is enough of marie still left to save her. she meant that she said to pike earlier — she has no plans to give up. not today, not until there is nothing left to do, and even then, she’ll try to come up with something. she already lost someone to this; it is a new day, and batel is not going to join hemmer.
❛⠀⠀⠀ now i’m the one who is supposed to say all the complicated words. don’t go trying to steal my job, ⠀ ⠀ ❜ ⠀ ⠀ it was not a bad diagnosis, but marie doesn’t need to know that. gentle hands urge her to lie back down, guiding her to what she is supposed to be doing: taking care of herself, resting. this is her sickbay, and she is the only one here who gets to come up with terrible, terrifying theories like that. her expression and tone remain invariably warm, a sharp contrast to the white-washed walls around her, golden smile perched firmly on her lips, a touch of springtime to ward away reality.
Tumblr media
❛⠀⠀⠀ but thank you for the very thorough list of symptoms. i now know who to point towards next time pike huffs he is fine,⠀ ⠀ ❜ ⠀ ⠀ she says, writing it all down on her padd. ⠀ ⠀ ❛⠀⠀⠀ i’m going to start the scans. it should take a few minutes, is there anything you need before we start?⠀ ⠀ ❜ ⠀

for all her frustrations, not a glimmer of it shows on marie's face. as a lawyer and as a captain, impassivity has served her well, and she offers ellie only a smile. her frustrations aren't directed towards the woman anyways, but towards their guests. guests who had been asked. guests who had not chosen to share that they would consider the foods offered to them offensive until it was too late. all of this — all of it — could have been averted had they merely communicated.
Tumblr media
❛ it happens. it's not your fault, ❜ she reassures, and though the words are half-automatic, marie does mean them. ❛ we'll fix it. and they're going to apologize to you, before this is over. ❜
