Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1
The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.
So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.
So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.
Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.
And the probe is working again.
From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

For the record, I would never knowingly use or share AI generated art in anything I post, so if you ever catch me doing so, it was an accident, and I'd like you to let me know so I can delete it.

…. I literally needed this so badly ten hours ago
My face is having uncontrollable spasms. Great. It hurts really, really, really bad.
I think part of why I have trouble explaining pain to the doctor is when they ask about the pain scale I always think “Well, if someone threw me down a flight of stairs right now or punched me a few times, it would definitely hurt a lot more” so I end up saying a low number. I was reading an article that said that “10” is the most commonly reported number and that is baffling to me. When I woke up from surgery with an 8" incision in my body and I could hardly even speak, I was in the most horrific pain of my life but I said “6” because I thought “Well, if you hit me in the stomach, it would be worse.”

Multiple ekgs, blood tests, a urine test, a chest x-ray, and nine hours later and they still don’t know what’s wrong with me 😁
But they’re pretty sure I’m not dying so they said I could go home and honestly that’s all I care about at this point

Secret third thing: Taylor is the albatross, but is she truly a curse, or is that only what the public says? Because the albatross wasn’t originally a curse, remember — it was good luck! It was protecting them! It only became one when they killed it
“The Albatross” immediately made me think of “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge — a ballad that tells the story of a ship that cursed itself when the captain shot and killed an albatross that had been helping to lead the ship out of danger. Samuel Taylor Coleridge was one of the early poets of the Romantic period, aka the Lake Poets that Taylor references on “the lakes.” I am fascinated by that potential connection. There’s room for some really cool plays on words and meanings, because there’s also the phrase “an albatross around your neck,” meaning a heavy burden that’s weighing you down (this comes from the poem actually — the Mariner who shot the albatross is forced to wear its corpse around his neck as punishment).
I’m just wondering, is the relationship the albatross, and if it is, is it the sacred kind or the burdensome kind? Taylor certainly did feel that it led her out of a very dangerous time in her life. Perhaps she has always thought it to be the former but now it’s starting to feel like the latter, but she’s afraid to “shoot it down” and end it because what if it is sacred? What if in doing so she’ll curse herself irrevocably? Or maybe she has ended it, and is struggling in the aftermath of its end and wondering if she did the right thing? And there’s also the Coleridge connection — she very much associated the Lake Poets with running away and disappearing with her muse, an idea that she had romanticized and held sacred in the past but that recently she seems to have rethought and realized isn’t how she wants to live her life. Maybe that’s the albatross — that lifestyle was once sacred to her (“sacred new beginnings that became my religion”), but something killed it and it became a burden hanging around her neck.
Much to think about.
