Singapore in 2021 news prepares the worst scenario for Covid-19 to be endemic

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia - Singapore's Minister of Finance, Lawrence Wong, stated that the government of the neighboring country had prepared a scenario for the corona virus (Covid-19) to become endemic. Endemic means that Covid-19 will not go away, will continue to exist for the next several years, and can occur from time to time.

"When will that happen? I really don't know," Wong said as quoted by The Straits Times, Saturday (29/5).

"But we do plan a plausible scenario, where scientists around the world come to the point that eliminating Covid-19 is impossible, and we have to live with this virus," he added. Wong also said that the Singapore government did not plan to tighten the partial lockdown policy that is currently being implemented. According to him, the partial lockdown policy is working well, and is starting to show an effect on the number of cases of Covid-19 transmission in Singapore.

On the one hand, he, who is the Chair of the Singapore Covid-19 Task Force, asked the public to remain vigilant by reducing unnecessary activities outside the home.

Previously, Australian Griffith University epidemiologist Dicky Budiman had stated that Covid-19 was very likely to be endemic in Indonesia.

The reason is, he said, the essence of the indicator that a disease will become endemic is the reproductive rate. When a region or country finds it difficult to reach this number below one, it is very likely that diseases including Covid-19 will become endemic.

"He never did or find it difficult to reach below one even though it could happen in some areas below one, even like in Australia," he said as quoted by detikcom.

He added, the tendency for Covid-19 to become endemic in the region was even greater when the health system was still poor and the strategy for handling Covid-19 was not optimal, as was the case in tracing and testing.

"But in countries with poor health systems, the testing tracing strategy is still poor, including Indonesia, which tends to be very endemic," continued Dicky.

"Because the reproductive rate is in the range of 1, especially in some areas it could be more than one, this is very influential in a disease becoming endemic," he said.
