As everyone bursted into the typical congratulations and such, Marlene remained frozen on her seat, barely able to say a meaningless ‘congratulations’. There was no difference between this and being hit by a bludger. So this was why he had been ignoring her. This was why the radio silence. Marlene downed the rest of her wine, hoping it would wash her sorrows away, but it did nothing. Only when it was acceptable, she excused herself, saying she needed a smoke.

“That will kill you, Marlene” her mother said reprovingly. All the blonde could do was shrug her shoulders. “Well, either that or You-Know-Who or some dumb eath eater, so it doesn’t really matter” she said darkly. Clearly an answer that didn’t suit well with the McKinnon matriarch. In all honesty, she just wanted to go home, curl on her bed and cry herself to sleep.

The cheeky smirk was gone the second she exited the room. The blonde witch bit her bottom lip as she walked across the corridor towards the garden. Once outside, she kept on walking and walking until she was far enough and only then, she bursted into tears.

Dinner was pretty much over and interrupted thanks to his announcement. His siblings gave him hugs and patted him on the back. His mother and Mrs. McKinnion were both excitedly talking about the prospect of grandchildren. Edgar watched as Marlene walked away. No one else saw it, but he could see the pain in her eyes. He knew it too well because he was often the one causing it. How many times had he hurt her in the past with his actions? This one could have been the worst by far.

After a few minutes, he was able to sneak off as everyone went into the other room for celebratory drinks. He said he was going to step out for some air for a moment. Amelia gave him a knowing look and he just ignored it. He had to check on Marlene.

He had seen her walked towards the gardens, but it took him a while to finally catch up with her. When he found her, he put his hands in his pockets and let out a heavy sigh. “I am sorry you had to find out this way,” he said as if that made any difference at all.

Marlene’s stomach twisted with rage when she heard Lori’s name, but she hid her anger with another bite of Mrs. Bones’ meal. She was doing such a big effort to not look at him, not even give into the temptation that implied just looking at him and his fucking handsome face. “Oh no” Marlene heard her mother said. “Is she alright?” She asked worriedly since she clearly liked the woman and that angered Marlene even more.

In a more realistic aspect, Lori wasn’t bad, but Marlene hated her simply because she was the woman Edgar chose. It wasn’t very feminist of her, but it was how she felt. However, when Mrs. Bones spoke, she looked up and frowned confused. Had Mrs. Bones being sick and she never knew? The siblings all looked confused and even Mrs. McKinnon looked confused at first before her eyes widened. “Is Lori pregnant?” She asked, a wide smile spreading across her features. 

Marlene paused, this time she looked up at Edgar. The good thing was that her incredulity matched her sibling’s so is not like someone would notice it. The color abandoned her skin and she almost dropped her fork. Surely this must be a misunderstanding.

Edgar didn’t look up when Mrs. McKinnion asked the pointed question. He knew he shouldn’t have told his mother yet, she could not keep things secret. But he had no one to turn to when he found out the news. She was of course was ecstatic about becoming a grandmother, she was already helping Lori plan for their future life of being parents.

Edgar slowly looked up, his gaze meeting Marlene’s for the first time. He could see the hurt in her eyes, he hated that she had to find out like this, in front of both their families. He should have told her privately. He cleared his throat and set down his fork.

“Yes, we just found out a few weeks ago,” he said softly, giving his best fake smile. He looked at his brother and twin sister, both of them looking just as excited as their mother. Even the McKinnions were congratulating him. This should have been a happy occasion, but instead, he felt trapped. “She’s going to the healer in a few weeks, to find out if it's a boy or girl,” his mother said, practically squealing next to Mrs. McKinnion.

The Family Dinner || Edgar&Marlene

Marlene did not expect to be dragged to the Bones’ when she arrived to her parents home, she thought this would be just a regular family dinner with her siblings and parents. Is not like she had a lot of free time, so she was genuinely surprised. She didn’t even have time to fix herself, though she didn’t expect Edgar to be there either and she didn’t want him to be there either since it would make things even more difficult. Besides, he was ignoring her, he wasn’t answering any of her letters and she knew that he was either ignoring her or doing what he had to do. However, since she tended to be quite pesimist, she believed the first option.

So naturally, she choked on her wine when she saw Edgar walking right into the dining room. She wished someone in that room, she wished there was someone in there that could at least give her some moral support, but there wasn’t and Marlene was alone. She glanced briefly at him and immediately turned her attention to her brother and continued to talk with him and Sebastian. She ate and spoke, ignoring Edgar but also letting him know how upset she was with him. “So, Edgar, where’s Lori?” Susan McKinnon asked and Marlene felt like screaming. “I was hoping to pass her this recipe she asked the last time I saw her” she commented with a warm smile, completely unaware how the mere mention of Edgar’s wife made Marlene’s blood boil with rage.

Edgar let out a deep breath as he sat down. He tried to avoid looking at Marlene but he honestly couldn’t help himself. She was so damn beautiful. How many of these family dinner parties had they had over the years? He could remember playing footsy with her few times under the table or sneaking off to hook up in one of the rooms while his parents had tea and desserts. Usually, he would be excited to see her here, but after the recent news he received, he wasn’t excited about much.

He picked at his food, trying to be as polite as he could. He choked a little when Susan mentioned his wife. He felt like Lori’s name was taboo around Marlene, but no one else knew that. He cleared his throat a little and smiled at Susan. “She hasn’t been feeling well recently, she decided it was best she got some rest tonight,” he said.

His mother frowned a little. “Oh, Edgar, I went through the same thing. I have some potions she should try to help,” she said, fussing over him a little. Edgar blushed and gave a nod. “She’ll appreciate that,” he said, looking down at his plate.
