Oh Enodia, brightest one,
Where are you in the eclipse?
The dearest light is done.
Was it Hekate’s witches
Or Helios’ bright hand?
Oh yes, oh you,
Enodia, bearing high
Where are you through?
Cracks of cobble.
And eternal whisps
Or was the horses,
Crying so high?
Oh Enodia, Alexis,
Soon, when will you come?
Beyond the deep fog,
Where Perseus sleeps,
Eternal night reigns,
Where witch-lord Helios
Dare not let reach.
Oh Enodia, blooming
Do you hear my call of gold?
That of silver unfurling
Bright star that you are,
Let this sleep not be
Beyond the home,
In the Night’s shining fog.

The Hill at the Backyard
Every winter, my brother and I held a tradition
As the snowfall fell, a joyous occasion
We would gather our sleds from the back of the house
No more than cheap disks of Walmart plastic
We shoveled with the disks, snow from all over the backyard
Tugging at the small string to the base of our hill
To build a ramp
It was a small little hill, no more than one me and a half tall nowadays
But it was enough for us to be semi famous in the neighborhood
As what was more exciting than your own personal sledding ramp?
Every year, the ramp was the last to melt
When the school day was done, we could still play
As we carefully maintained it from wear
If only our cheaply made sleds could stand the impacts
If only
If only our relationship didn't drift
If only the snow would come back thick every year
If only we could get one last pair of disk sleds
All that remains still is that slope
Cursed to bear only stiff, brown stalks as the days go dark
It was here before us, and shall long after
That hill in the backyard
Will it remember how we pulled the grass out as toddlers?
Letting fluffy moss to take its place?
Will it remember the clay I dug from the peak?
To try and shape a piece of home to take with me to college?
Will it remember how it flooded with every hard rainfall?
To grant a large puddle to frolick in?
Will it remember the snow we shoveled from its base?
To make the ramp that sent its children's snow days to the stars?

for furor club (óðinn and dionysos)
hail to the furious one, who shall spare a drink for him?
have his feet not stamped the earth in its every rainbowed hue?
from the mead-stained mountains to the sun-scorched soil,
we call you friend and do the same.
to scream his name you must split your tongue to answer,
taste the terroir of the air.
is there another story the likes of you, ever-turning one?
the wise women carve, twine and weave and you wear your masks well.
rich herald of a mad banner, fetter and release of grove and vine,
show us the way to pleasure that flows through root-darkened halls;
waytamer, emperor who drapes drowned upon his inverted throne,
let us be the very forest we ride through.

My God
God of sun, plague, and prophecy
Of archery, oracles, and song
Brother to the wild, child to the beautiful and the thunderous
Lord Apollo, my words I relay,
For I pray they could hold a candle to
ten-thousand degrees of your
Whole-heartedly heartfelt embrace
Youthful god of the young,
With willing mind to give, I offer bountiful praise
As only a fool could not, but alas, am I not a fool anyway?
For mention alone brings me
Immeasurable, immersive, immense joy
Not a question of if, but how
How your power suffices
And you were judged to be
The passionate god
Of all the beauties and trials of human life
Which would make it no surprise that you,
My God, would be dawned as
The most gentle to mortals
And if power, my power suffices
My given ability to write, to speak
Then let me do the honors of
Honoring you and
the gifts of creativity and
expression you have
adorned us all with, Apollon

2023 Rural Dionysia Announcement
Io! The time of the year has come again for the Rural Dionysia!
How to participate
The Rural Dionysia is meant to be a smaller competition than its urban counterpart, as such, we have selected only 3 categories:
Freestyle poetry
Modern hymns
“Complete the fragment”
Freestyle poetry
Your poem can be about any chosen topic (myth, personal experience etc.) in any written format. It doesn't have to be religious in nature.
Modern hymn
An hymn must sing the praises of a deity of your choice. Unlike the "freestyle poetry", your work must be of religious nature to fit in this category.
Complete the Fragment
Each year, we choose a fragment from an Ancient Greek poet to work with. The challenge is that the initial fragment must be included somewhere in your piece in its original order. This means you can fill the gaps however you want, but you can’t switch the order of the words in your piece or remove words from the original fragment.
Here is the fragment selected for this 2023 edition:
Paen 16 by Pindar (52q Oxyrhynchus papyrus; late 2nd century AD; trans. William H. Race; Loeb 56)
……………… ]
Lord Apollo,
.…] for I pray
….] with willing (mind?) to give
….] power suffices
and you were judged to be
….] most gentle to mortals.
Here is the Greek text for reference. Note that because the word "mind" is unsure in this translation, it will be acceptable to keep or modify this word.
-
If in doubt for any of these categories, remember that you can check submissions from the previous years to get an idea of how others have done before.
Submitting your piece
Please submit your piece through submissions on this blog. All entries must be tagged for the category they are being submitted to. but you can only choose 1 category per piece and each person may only submit 1 entry per category each year.
Entries must also be tagged for potentially triggering content and squicks. If your entry needs a trigger warning, kindly add them at the end of your submission and we will take care of adding them in. Check the rules below for further information about submissions.
Calendar of the event
Nov. 10: Official announcement and opening of submissions.
Dec. 10: Final submission day.
Dec. 11: Vote opening.
Dec. 18: Vote closing.
Dec. 19-20: Announcement of the winners!
No worries though! We will be posting reminders about each step when the time comes.
General rules
Roleplay and fanfic are not acceptable submissions. This is a religious festival, please respect our faith and do not submit an entry if you are roleplaying or writing fanfiction.
Unlike with the City Dionysia, entries do not necessarily have to be about specific deities or Hellenic polytheism except for the “Modern Hymn” category, which has to be dedicated to one or many gods of your choice.
There are no meter restrictions. This is up to the writer.
All stories, myths, and poems must be entered using the submissions button.
All entries must be tagged for the category they are being submitted to. Entries must also be tagged for potentially triggering content and squicks.

Hail Lord Apollon, hail golden Phoebus,
Flawless beauty figure, brother of Artemis
Hail bows of soreness, hail rays of sanity
Protect pearly wisdom, shine for charity
Oh fawning sunlight, eyes found in starlet,
Pore over us, children born of garnet
Oh son of Zeus, honouring Leto's sadness,
Flames in our hearts, beating for your guidness.
Welcoming sun with our swanlike voices,
May crows be your gaze, may ravens be your choices.
We sing for your honour, make us worth your pity,
Fly us through harmony, through sunkissed dignity.
We'll write heartfelt poems, we'll play darling lyre,
Just to praise Apollo, our arts etheral father.
I pray to you, hail starry-eyed master,
Golden your blood, with mine pomping faster.
Veins turn to snakes, dreamy your spirit,
Opening the closure of your mystical visit.
Make me the centre of your meadow presence,
Pour in my soul your song's precious essence.
Your lips that made words for this praising hymn
May tell me your guide, the sun will never dim.

Love of Man
Shall we drink
Blood red wine
So that the divine vineyards
May seal our wounds
May that wine
Soothe my anger
So that I may tell the tale
Of my descending to the throne
I am not a traitor
But a revolutionary
Who stood up
To a mad God
Who spat on the face
Of a dictator
And fell to hell laughing
As I did
People claim that
I hold regret
For what I did
But no.
For I hold in my hand
The keys to true heaven
One where worries
Of losing your ticket die
For we hold you
With arms open wide
You are my child now
And we love you for you
You are right
To be scared
As my curse is not
My new domicile
But this twisting
Of my name
My face
My love of humanity
God hates humanity
Finds them a plague
That he created
Claims it his only flaw
So he scrubs humanity
From humans
Then Claims
They are saved
Trying to change
Human nature
Playing God
Trying to keep his perfect image
While I save humanity
From extinction
So join me
And I shall embrace you

An Attempt of A Hymn of A Foolish Farmer Scholar
I sing my praise to you,
ladies of the earth.
Kore! Horaphorus!
i
Mysterious and Bountiful,
with the passing of days and
seasons your power is evident.
In pouring out libations at
grounds first thaw
grant your blessing our
wishes be spontaneously
fulfilled!
You grant the bounty of
crops, feeding the hungry,
helping provide lively hood.
Beauty.
ii
Even traveling to Bactria and Gandahara. You heard the prayers of the people.
Homage to you I pray!
Kore, traveling you with tyche brought the pomegranate, exchanging friendship with kishimojin, protecting things that grow, be children or crops
Homage to you I pray!
Protecting the heart of
goodness of the mysteries,
at the time of Eternal Buddha Shakyamuni Manifesting Enlightenment as the prince Siddartha Gautama, you both bore witness to him!
With the strength of the
earth, you undammed the
hadean waters, washing
away remnants of Maras
army, showing even the Theoi stood against him.
Again, years later,
when the Lotus Born,
was ordained as Shakya Sengye, you both emerged,
blessing him with the three robes and the begging bowl
iii
Even in simplicity i cannot sing praises daily, Tender and Firm, Divine Nurse Matron of the Earth, and Joyfilled Princess,
Even in the cold of winter, even a few flowers bloom
and even wheat bows humbly
Even in the depths of fall your poppies bloom
In all seasons, the Hens and Roosters feel your blessings.
Grant your blessings and care
My Dear Strong Loving Goddesses

Freeform Musing on the Zeus of China
To Mighty Zeus, your influence, streching far beyond greece, ganquan and linguan gong, sweet water palace and forest of light palace in the land of Serikos. Worshiped by Noble Hu Hai, born of a Greco Bactrian Princess.
Then later, at the defeat of enemies Xiutu obtained your statue, worshipping it. Han Wudi followed defeating him.
A god of the heavens, some called you.
Others, a Buddha.
Incense and Prostrations.
Homage to Zeus.
