It's been awhile since I made a post about how fucking rad the world actually is, and amidst all the pandemics and climate change and economic troubles, I felt the need.

The Danakil Depression is probably the closest you'll ever be able to come to standing on the surface of Venus (without the crushing atmosphere, of course). Choking sulphuric acid and chlorine gases fill the air, while acid ponds and geysers pepper the landscape.

A very rare, nocturnal, shrew-like creature that is one of the few mammals able to produce venom. Look at him! Look at his snout! He's just a little guy! He will bite you and run away on his back legs! He's rare, and endangered, but not gone! Not gone yet, bitches!

Did you know that apparently, on this massive record of earth's geological history, there's a chunk of time missing? Science has some hypotheses about how and why this happens (and yes, it's been found in more than one place), but they are really only hypotheses, and no one's really sure what happened to, oh, 1.6 billion years, give or take.

Today is Armenian genocide remembrance day. On april 24, 1915 started mass deportations of hundreds of Armenian intelectuals and community leaders, who were (most of the time) eventually killed. Armenian women and children were systematically r//ed and forcibly converted into islam. There were more than 2 milion Armenians in ottoman empire prior to ww1, 1,5 milion of them were viciously killed. Three millennia of Armenian civilaziation in eastern Anatolis was fully destroyed. Turkey today refuses to acknowledge genocides of christian minorities in early 20th century.
Do you know that mass ethnic cleansing of Armenians in ottoman empire inspired Lemkin to coin the term 'genocide'?
Last year in september azerbaijan allied with turkey initiated a war against Armenia. More that 5000 Armenians were murdered, thousands of Armenia families had to live their ancestrial land to not get murdered. There are hundreds of vids on internet where armenian p.o.w.s are tortured. Recently azerbaijan opened a "museum" displayind dead or dying Armenians and kids were allowed to visit it.

"In a historic “first-of-its-kind” agreement the government of British Colombia has acknowledged the aboriginal ownership of 200 islands off the west coast of Canada.
The owners are the Haida nation, and rather than the Canadian government giving something to a First Nation, the agreement admits that the “Xhaaidlagha Gwaayaai” or the “islands at the end of world,” always belonged to them, a subtle yet powerful difference in the wording of First Nations negotiating.
BC Premier David Eby called the treaty “long overdue” and once signed, will clear the way for half a million hectares (1.3 million acres) of land to be managed by the Haida.
Postal service, shipping lanes, school and community services, private property rights, and local government jurisdiction, will all be unaffected by the agreement, which will essentially outline that the Haida decide what to do with the 200 or so islands and islets.
“We could be facing each other in a courtroom, we could have been fighting each other for years and years, but we chose a different path,” said Minister of Indigenous Relations of BC, Murray Rankin at the signing ceremony, who added that it took creativity and courage to “create a better world for our children.”
Indeed, making the agreement outside the courts of the formal treaty process reflects a vastly different way of negotiating than has been the norm for Canada.
“This agreement won’t only raise all boats here on Haida Gwaii – increase opportunity and prosperity for the Haida people and for the whole community and for the whole province – but it will also be an example and another way for nations – not just in British Columbia, but right across Canada – to have their title recognized,” said Eby.
In other words, by deciding this outside court, Eby and the province of BC hope to set a new standard for how such land title agreements are struck."

Happy tenth birthday to The Kelpies.
The Kelpies, located in Falkirk, tower a colossal 30 metres above the Forth and Clyde Canal and form a dramatic gateway to the canal entrance on the East Coast of Scotland. Created by Scotland's leading sculptor Andy Scott, The Kelpies are a monument to horse powered heritage across Central Scotland.
Some details of the Kelpies, each structure contains approximately 18,000 individual pieces. There is over 1.5 miles of steel in each structure. They each weigh over 300 tonnes and sit on 1,200 tonne foundations. Each structure has 464 steel plates In a monumental feat of engineering, The Kelpies rose from the ground in just 90 days, in late 2013.
Nearly one million people visited the Kelpies sculptures in Falkirk in the first year, since then the visitor numbers have declined, but still have numbers of over 500,000 a year
Some people criticise the cost of The Kelpies, said to be around £5 million, to me it is justified, it does bring a lot of people into the area of Falkirk in general, and are we to be the generation that forgets about public art just because of the costs? I love them and have visited them to many times to remember of the years, I may not be in Falkirk now, but I will take a trip to The Helix again and grab more pics, enjoy a coffee and take in the views over to The Ochils.
This saturday the Helix is hosting a tenth party to celebrate their birthday, the day event is free for all to attend and includes a producers market, face painters, Clydesdale Horse Demonstrations, Pipe Bands and much more. The evening event is ticked and you have performances by Rebecca Vasmant, Callum Beattie, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, and much more., there are still some tickets available.

1st April 1964: US-backed coup in Brazil
João Goluart (pictured above) was a left-wing president of Brazil, serving from 8 September 1961 until he was overthrown in a military coup on 1 April 1964. Throughout his political career, he faced constant opposition and attempts to prevent him from maintaining a life in politics. During his time as Minister of Labour the media and military demanded his resignation, he departed from political activites for weeks after attacks made by rivals, political and military elements called for his removal as Vice-President, and Congress was reluctant to declare him President.
During his presidency, he led plans to strenghten the economy & improve development and led the drive for nuclear disarmament in Latin America. Some of his reforms included:
Education reform - plans to combat adult illiteracy, university reform and a ban on private schooling.
Tax reform - profits by multinational companies would be re-invested into Brazil and income tax was to be proportional to personal profit.
Electoral reform - extension of voting rights to illiterate people and low-ranking military officers.
Land reform - non-productive properties larger than 600 hectares would be expropriated and redistributed to the population.
His reforms were labelled a “socialist threat” by right-wing sectors of society and of the military, and Goulart himself was accused of being a communist.
The U.S. government had been covertly involved in Brazillian politics for years before the coup, with U.S. leaders deciding in 1962 to fund right-wing paramilitary groups in opposition to Goulart. For a time, the US government tried to “co-operate” with Goulart by seeking “to change the political and economic orientation of Goulart and his government” to align with Western interests. The US government corresponded with Brazillian military leaders in the days leading up to the coup, warning of Goulart’s “communist sympathies” and urging for arms to be sent at night via an unmarked submarine.
On the 1st April, the Brazillian military marched into the capital and declared the position of President ‘vacant’. Pascoal Ranieri Mazzilli was sworn in as President the next day - an action which went against the Constitution (ironic, given that the generals carrying out the coup used the defence of protecting the Constitution).
The coup brought a military dictatorship to Brazil which would rule for the next 21 years. After the coup, Goluart became a farmer in Uruguay, taking part in the Frente Ampla movement to restore democracy to Brazil through democratic means. Within two years, in accord with concessions promised to the U.S. government for its financial support of the overthrow, foreign companies gained control of about half of Brazilian industry.
Declassified transcripts of communications between U.S. ambassador Lincoln Gordon and the U.S. government show that U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson authorized logistical materials to be in place and a US Navy fleet led by an aircraft carrier to support the coup against Goulart. These included ammunition, motor oil, gasoline, aviation gasoline and other materials to help in a potential civil war in US Navy tankers sailing from Aruba.
Goulart was allegedly killed as part of Operation Condor on 6th December 1976.
