To the Sea, to the Sea! The white gulls are crying,
The wind is blowing, and the white foam is flying.
West, west away, the round sun is falling.
Grey ship, grey ship, do you hear them calling,
The voices of my people that have gone before me?
I will leave, I will leave the woods that bore me;
For our days are ending and our years failing.
I will pass the wide waters lonely sailing.
Long are the waves on the Last Shore falling,
Sweet are the voices in the Lost Isle calling,
In Eressëa, in Elvenhome that no man can discover,
Where the leaves fall not: land of my people for ever!'

So does anyone else think it is kind of extremely neat that Irl there was a lunar eclipse on March 25th (Ring is destroyed) and a solar eclipse on April 8th (Frodo and Sam wake up from their healing sleep)
Like what are the chances, right? Celestial event Ring Day and Waking Day bookends? Cheers I'll drink to that bro

Things in lotr that I'm such a fan of #463: The levity that tends to poke its head up whenever shit has just gone down and people are waking up or otherwise recovering from Ordeals. The meeting of dear friends after a danger has passed? Have some mild hilarity, as a treat

When Sam awoke, he found that he was lying on some soft bed, but over him gently swayed wide beechen boughs
Just a wee personal note that this vividly takes me back to laying down looking at the sky through the trees in the forest by where I used to live. The wind made them sway and knock against each other and it was so peaceful 😌
Then, as a sweet rain will pass down a wind of spring and the sun will shine out the clearer, his tears ceased, and his laughter welled up, and laughing he sprang from his bed.
'How do I feel?' he cried. 'Well, I don't know how to say it. I feel, I feel' – he waved his arms in the air – 'I feel like spring after winter, and sun on the leaves; and like trumpets and harps and all the songs I have ever heard!'
:,] HAPPY WAKING DAY 🌄
'Weeks indeed,' said Pippin. 'And then Frodo will have to be locked up in a tower in Minas Tirith and write it all down.
Pippin don't joke about that adlsngdh
Otherwise he will forget half of it, and poor old Bilbo will be dreadfully disappointed.'

'And not only Sam and Frodo here,' said Gimli, 'but you too, Pippin. I love you, if only because of the pains you have cost me, which I shall never forget. Nor shall I forget finding you on the hill of the last battle. But for Gimli the Dwarf you would have been lost then. But at least I know now the look of a hobbit's foot, though it be all that can be seen under a heap of bodies. And when I heaved that great carcase off you, I made sure you were dead. I could have torn out my beard. And it is only a day yet since you were first up and abroad again. To bed now you go. And so shall I.'
I love Gimli's "considering how much trouble I've been through chasing/saving your careless hobbit ass, you're so lucky I'm very, very fond of you" speeches.

Orcs, and talking trees, and leagues of grass, and galloping riders, and glittering caves, and white towers and golden halls, and battles, and tall ships sailing, all these passed before Sam's mind until he felt bewildered. But amidst all these wonders he returned always to his astonishment at the size of Merry and Pippin; and he made them stand back to back with Frodo and himself.
- Samwise's priorities, as ever, remain irreproachable
He scratched his head. 'Can't understand it at your age!' he said. 'But there it is: you're three inches taller than you ought to be, or I'm a dwarf.'
'That you certainly are not,' said Gimli.

'The King?' said Sam. 'What king, and who is he?'
'The King of Gondor and Lord of the Western Lands,' said Gandalf; 'and he has taken back all his ancient realm. He will ride soon to his crowning, but he waits for you.'

An incomplete and chaotic list of things that surprised me reading LotR for the first time in about 10 years and in the form of the newsletter organized by @sindar-princeling:
How little time Gandalf spends with the Fellowship before he falls into Khazad-Dûm
The grief of Lothlórien. Whether Frodo succeeds or not, the land will wither and come to an end
The way all the characters keep coming back to Lothlórien in their minds and all of them understand they will never see anything as lovely again
The light and water of Lothlórien and Fangorn are so vividly described they’ve become fully formed places in my head that I can retreat into
The Two Towers take place over about 10 days or so and I don’t remember very much from this book because reading it in ‘real’ time was such a whirlwind
Éomer is kind and quite enlightened! Movie Éomer is kinda stupid
The slow buildup of Frodo & Sam’s relationship is so much better than I remember!
Éowyn is kind of awful in her despair and comes off as disdainful and almost cruel. They made her much more sympathetic in the films. Her healing, however, is incredibly touching and well-written
There are so many gestures of tenderness!!! Mostly Sam holding and kissing Frodo’s hands, cradling him in his lap or hugging him when they sleep in Mordor but also the way Faramir treats Éowyn, holds her hand and kisses her forehead. Aragorn and Éomer embracing. Gandalf taking care of Pippin after he looks into the Palantír…. Everyone just loves everyone so much :’)
I LOVE HIM, WHETHER OR NO!!! Seeing Frodo through Sam’s POV, I can’t help but love him too. I want to hold him in cupped hands like a kitten and tell him everything’s gonna be alright
Sam carrying the Ring for a bit and finally understanding what Frodo has been going through (and sparing Gollum’s life as a result and thereby saving all of Middle-Earth). Sam accepting his inevitable death and making up his mind to go to the bitter end anyway. Sam carrying Frodo almost all the way up the Orodruin <3
Faramir!!!!!! I didn’t expect to go so crazy for him at all but in the movies they basically took a lot of his best qualities and gave them to Aragorn. He’s just so dreamy <3
I didn’t really like Aragorn. He’s incredible when he’s still Strider but once he begins his transition to kingship, he becomes almost inhuman. I get that he has to be larger-than-life but he loses his friendliness and charm…
The books are so fucking racist. Like so much. It’s unbelievable. Not just in the way it describes the Southrons and Easterlings, or in making orcs all bad and therefore it’s fine to kill them, but even in the way the different races of Men are compared. Gondor is in decline because it’s lost its racial purity. No wonder nazis love the books. I hope Jirt went to the purgatory for this for a while since he was such a catholic.
The host of the dead don’t even fight in the Pelennor fields?
When Pippin pulls Faramir from the pyre, Denethor is not done and pulls out a knife to try to kill him any way he can
Pippin thinking he understands Denethor now as he tries to get killed at the Black Gate
Gimli loves Pippin! And finds him under a pile of bodies!

And even as he espied them and came swooping down, he saw them fall, worn out, or choked with fumes and heat, or stricken down by despair at last, hiding their eyes from death. Side by side they lay, and down swept Gwaihir, and down came Landroval and Meneldor the swift…
Orthannen im vi ól Coll e dû Or hiriath naur Na rovail mae sui 'waew Man prestant i ardhon? Cerithar aen illiad dim ùthenin? In a dream I was lifted up. Borne from the darkness Above rivers of fire On wings soft as the wind. What's happened to the world? Is everything sad going to come untrue?

'I am glad that you are here with me,' said Frodo. 'Here at the end of all things, Sam.'
'Yes, I am with you, Master,' said Sam, laying Frodo's wounded hand gently to his breast. 'And you're with me. And the journey's finished. But after coming all that way I don't want to give up yet. It's not like me, somehow, if you understand.'
