she gives a little push to his chest.  ❛shut up❜ he’s teasing her, nothing new but with the difference that she’s been feeling some type of way everytime she looked at him now. it had happened for a few months but she had been very quiet about it, she was in denial. roxanne doesn’t think she has talked about it with anyone. she was not ready to admit seeing him walk into the room felt like being struck by lighting and that’s why her body reacted the way it did right now; cheeks all red and warm.  ❛it’s just hot in here, can you open a window or something?❜ the girl complains rolling her eyes. roxanne is not sure if the situation was the other way around he would be blushing, but maybe she could try  ━ just not yet.  ❛bring the popcorn loser❜ the redhead turns around walking out of the kitchen and making her way to the living room so they could start movie night in peace. ‘this is like every movie night, come on’ she thinks to herself taking her shoes off and sitting with her legs on the couch. 

he  pretends  to  stumble  a  little  bit  as  she  gently  pushes  him  ,  “  now  roxie  is  that  any  way  to  treat  your  best  friend  ?  i  could’ve  fallen  and  injured  myself  .  ”  he  says  with  a  small  pout  in  her  direction  .  “  you  wouldn’t  want  that  now  would  you  ?  ”  being  friends with  someone  for  so  long  meant  picking  up  on  any  slight  shift  in  the  relationship  ,  and  recently  things  had  felt  ...  different  .  connor  had  still  yet  to  discern  if  that  was  good  or  bad  .  but  ,  roxie  was  still  standing  in  front  of  him  ,  so  something  in  the  world  had  to  be  working  in  his  favor  .  “  don’t  call  me  a  loser  ,  loser  !  ”  he  calls  out  to  the  living  room  as  she  makes  her  departure  .  finally  ,  he  makes  his  way  into  the  living  room  with  an  assortment  of  snacks  ,  and  two  glasses  of  lemonade  ,  before  setting  the  snacks  down  he  holds  one  out  to  roxie  .  “  i  think  this  might  help  you  cool  down  .  ”  he  teases  .  and  with  that  said  he  still  sits  a  little  closer  than  usual  ,  wrapping  an  arm  around  her  gently  ,  “  you  know  ,  i’ve  missed  this  .  ”  he  states  with  a  smile  .

𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐎𝐑 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐑𝐎𝐒𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐄  .

          it  was  a  relief  to  know  that  she  could  be  of  some  use  to  connor  besides  the   frequent  patching  up  he  required  .  popping  over  to  help  him  with  some  event  seemed  like  a  walk  in  the  park  in  comparison  .  taking  a  seat  ,  she  glances  round  the  familiar  room  ,  a  fond  smile  forming  upon  his  return  with  a  rather  large  binder  in  hand  .  “  don’t  you  think  elegant  ‘  wild  ’  is  a  tad  overdone  ?  i  mean  every  elegant  party  has  a  champagne  tower  as  high  as  the  ceiling  but  your  first  idea  sounds  interesting  .  there’s  plenty  of  leeway   in  terms  of  decorating  the  place  ,  you  have  the  animals  as  you  mentioned  ,  even  the  food  you  could  go  wild  with  flavours  or  appearance  .  i  mean  the  birthday  girl  herself  could  even  get  an  outfit  based  on   the  theme  as  in  animal  prints  or  whatever  she  chooses  ,  so  i  say  go  with  the  more  unique  idea  .  you’ll  do  great  .  ”

rose  was  one  of  the  only  people  that  would  be  honest  with  connor  ,  or  at  leastt  that’s  how  it  felt  when  he  came  to  her  with  ideas  and  it  helped  that  she  had  an  eye  for  aesthetics  .  and  so  they  constantly  find  themselves  in  his  dining  room  ,  going  over  ideas  ,  and  coming  up  with  new  ones  for  clients  connor  hadn’t  even  earned  yet  .  “  overdone  ,  but  quite  popular  among  socialites  .  ”  he  remarks  knowing  that  he  should  probably  scrap  the  idea  before  rose  says  anything  else  .  “  i  knew  i  could  count  on  you  to  help  me  .  ”  he  says  moving  the  swatches  around  as  she  spouts  out  ideas  for  him  to  use  ,  and  writing  down  new  notes  in  the  margins  of  old  ones  .  “  so  maybe  go  with  something  a  little  more  exotic  ?  like  imported  foods  and  such  ?  now  i’m  thinking  that  maybe  the  decor  doesn’t  have  to  be  as  heavy  -  handed  though  ?  i  still  want  people  to  feel  comfortable  after  all  .  ”

𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐎𝐑 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐃𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐍 .

                    A brightness didn’t cover the environment, and the air felt thick as soft colors remained locked onto the features of her friend as his voice slipped into her ears. It was saddening, upsetting, had her stomach turning as the four words replayed like a broken record in her mind and those feelings only continued to grow as he added on. ❝You didn’t let me down, I don’t ever want you to think that.❞ The brunette let out first as her head shook, wanting to make that the first clear statement she made. ❝Just because you didn’t take my advice doesn’t mean you let me down. It’s simply advice in an attempt to help you, to keep us from finding ourselves in situations like this. It’s your choice if you follow that advice or not, either way, I’m always going to be here for you, whether you follow that advice or not.❞ It was all in an attempt to reassure the other as she leaned closer, moving to gently wrap an arm over the other to try to offer some form of comfort. ❝There’s absolutely nothing wrong with you.❞

connor  wasn’t  easily  upset  about  anything  .  in  fact  he  prided  himself  on  letting  things  pass  him  by  ,  unable  to  phase  him  ,  on  being  untouchable  .  but  there  were  certain  things  ,  his  relationship  with  elijah  especially  ,  that  strikes  a  chord  he’d  long  since  forgotten  about  .  “  you  told  me  not  to  do  it  , and  i  still  did  .  how  did  i  not  let  you  down  ?  ”  he  questions  with  a  gentle  voice  .  “  but  you’ve  told  me  time  and  time  again  dev  .  maybe  i’m  just  not  fixable  .  maybe  i’m  destined  to  feel  this  way  forever  .  ”  he  was  never  one  to  speak  in  absolutes  but  regurgitating  emotions  he’d  long  since  tried  to  purge  had  him  speaking  in  hyperbolics  .  “  always  ?  ”  he  questions  with  a  soft  hopeful  glance  ,  “  you  know  i  really  should  listen  to  you  more  often  ,  i’m  sorry  i  don’t  .  ”  he  whispers  ,  leaning  into  the  touch  so  effortlessly  .  for  the  short  time  he’d  known  devin  she’d  always  felt  like  home  .  a  sense  of  comfort  he’d  promised  he’d  never  found  in  other  people  until  now  .  “  i  don’t  know  what  i’d  do  without  you  .  ”

“  thank  you  to  agreeing  to  help  me  .  ”  he  comments  as  he  lets  her  inside  his  home  ,  “  make  yourself  at  home  by  the  way  ,  i  need  to  go  get  my  binder  .  ”  his  voices  drifts  away  as  he  exits  and  makes  a  search  for  his  work  binder  ,  and  returns  as  he  enters  into  the  dining  room  laying  miscellaneous  papers  and  color  swatches  on  the  table  .  “  okay  so  i’m  hosting  a  birthday  party  for  this  socialite  ,  who  i  will  not  tell  you  the  name  of  for  nda  reasons  ,  but  all  she  gave  me  to  work  with  is  that  she  wanted  it  to  be  ‘  wild  ’  ,  so  i  came  up  with  a  couple  ideas  .  ”  he  points  to  the  first  set  of  papers  ,  “  so  i  was  thinking  the  literal  sense  we  get  a  bunch  of  wild  animals  :  zebra  ,  tigers  ,  that  whole  thing  .  ethically  handled  of  course  .  ”  he  adds  on  before  continuing  ,  “  or  maybe  like  she  wants  a  more  elegant  ‘  wild  ’  a  champagne  tower  and  snack  chandelier  ,  i  don’t  know  .  ”

there  they  stood  in  a  position  they’d  been  multiple  times  before  ,  standing  a  little  too  close  for  comfort  in  the  middle  of  his  kitchen  .  the  silence  is  broken  when  he  speaks  ,  “  is  there  a  reason  you’re  blushing  like  that  ?  ”  connor  remarked  with  a  triumphant  laugh  .  it  was  fun  to  attempt  to  get  a  rise  out  of  roxanne  from  time  to  time  ,  doing  small  things  to  see  her  different  reactions  .  something  he’d  done  since  he  was  old  enough  to  remember  .  today’s  culprit  was  a  small  kiss  on  the  cheek  ,  a  seemingly  innocent  action  that  had  happened  time  and  time  before  ,  but  this  time  it  was  peppered  with  a  bunch  of  small  kisses  around  her  face  .  he’s  pulled  away  by  the  sound  of  the  mircowave’s  obnoxious  beeping  ,  and  the  wafting  smell  of  overly  buttered  popcorn  .  “  seriously  though  roxie  ,  you’re  turning  red  ,  do  you  want  me  to  get  you  something  to  cool  down  before  movie  night  ?  ”

“  i  let  you  down  .  ”  he  sighs  as  he  sinks  further  into  the  couch  .  devin  was  constantly  taking  care  of  him  ,  giving  him  the  best  advice  possible  ,  and  without  fail  every  single  time  he  never  followed  it  .  thinking  maybe  he  knew  better  .  it  got  to  the  point  where  devin  wouldn’t  leave  until  connor  followed  her  piece  of  advice  to  the  very  letter  .  “  sp  remember  how  i  told  you  i  wouldn’t  call  elijah  again  because  we’re  no  good  for  each  other  ?  ”  he  pauses  but  they  both  know  where  this  is  going  .  “  well  the  other  night  he  came  over  ,  and  it  felt  like  old  times  ,  but  today  he  couldn’t  even  look  at  me  .  ”  he  lets  out  a  sigh  ,  water  pooling  in  his  eyes  .  to  this  day  ,  devin  was  the  second  person  who’d  ever  seen  connor  cry  .  “  i  know  i  hurt  him  ,  but  i  am  trying  so  hard  dev  .  i  don’t  think  that  i’ve  never  wanted  anymore  more  .  what’s  wrong  with  me  .  ”

𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐎𝐑 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐉𝐀𝐇  .

he stumbled out into the cold night, his breathe visible in the chilly air. one whiff of him was enough to get any passerby drunk. he smelled of gin and vaguely something sweet. music from the bar flooded out into the street. elijah’s limbs were loose as he danced around, singing along to journey. “we’re halfway there…oooH OH livin’ on a prayer!” his head whipped around and he stumbled towards the person. “hey! i didn’t think i’d see you here,” elijah slurred.

random  drunken  calls  were  not  something  that  were  out  of  the  ordinary  for  the  two  of  them  ,  especially  considering  their  circumstances  .  but  this  one  was  different  ,  elijah  wasn’t  calling  him  to  emotionally  unload  on  him  ,  but  instead  calling  him  to  celebrate  .  “  slow  down  there  bon  jovi  ,  you  didn’t  have  to  have  this  much  fun  without  me  .  ”  connor  remarks  with  a  laugh  ,  silently  watching  the  other  move  with  such  adoration  .  “  you  think  i’d  miss  getting  to  see  you  ?  ”

connor  doesn’t  have  many  skills  outside  of  his  musical  capabilities  ,  but  if  there  is  one thing  he  taught  himself  to  do  it  was  cook  .  mostly  to  impress  elijah  with  his  culinary finesse  ,  but  it  seemed  at  this  point  everything  he  did  was  a  ploy  to  get  his  attention  . he  lays  the  pancakes  in  front  of  east  ,   “  whipped  cream  smiley  face  ?  ”  he  questions shaking  the  canister  in  hand  .  before  he  can  even  respond ,  he’s  spraying  the  foam directly  in  his  mouth  .  goofy  grin  lining  his  features  ,  “  what  ?  i  had  to  make  sure  you weren’t  going  to  get  poisoned  good  sir  .  ”  their  entire  banter  consisted  of  joking  flirts and  snide  remarks  ,  he  truly  wouldn’t  have  it  any  other  way  .  there’s  a  twinkle  in  her eye  ,  a  glimmer  he  only  ever  truly  notices  with  elijah  ,  he cocks his head  ,  giving him  a once  over  .  “  have  you  always  been  this  beautiful  ?  ”

“i don’t need to learn how to cook if i have hot pockets. i’ve been eating them for like 20 years, i think i’ll be fine. i don’t need your help” he snaps, before regretting it almost immediately. he frowned and rubbed the back of his neck. connor always brought out conflicting emotions in him. he looked at his ex and felt pain and sorrow and warmth and regret. he never knew how to act around him. there was something so magnetic about him; elijah found himself drawn to him…even if it led to his detriment. “i think that’s one of your greatest skills actually- talking about yourself,” elijah teased, rolling his eyes. it made elijah’s head spin the way he could switch from snapping at him to joking around with him. it was never the same, no matter how hard they tried. connor’s next words caused elijah’s eyebrows to furrow. he was nothing special. he cleared his throat. this was crossing into dangerous territory. “you might need to get your brain checked,” he replied, looking over his shoulder. “yeah, yeah whatever,” the singer mumbled, searching the kitchen for the bottle of wine and the accompanying corkscrew. elijah opens the wine swiftly as if he were a professional. maybe he was. he pours two glasses and offers one to connor. elijah keeps his eyes on his own glass, however. eye contact might be far too intimate than what elitjah needed right now. “right so the sauce-” he breaks his silence. “just throw a bunch of shit in a pot, right?” elijah finally turns towards connor, bringing the wine to his lips and taking a hearty sip. 

“  i  never  said  that  you  needed  my  help  ,  or  maybe  you  do  in  order  to  get  better  taste  .  ”  connor  makes  a  joke  but  it’s  simply  a  defensive  mechanism  ,  a  shield  that  he  can  use  to  block  out  the  thought  that  maybe  elijah  did  hate  him  after  all  .  not  that  he  wasn’t  completely  justified  in  his  reasoning  ,  was  it  selfish  of  him  to  miss  what  they  used  to  have  ?  selfish  for  wanting  to  know  that  connor  was  the  only  one  that  felt  this  way  about  their  relationship  ,  or  at  least  the  fiery  debris  of  what  was  left  of  it  .  “  well  i  have  to  get  the  word  out  somehow  don’t  i  eli  ?  let  everyone  know  what  i’ve  got  to  offer  .  ”  the  words  feel  awfully  bitter  coming  from  him  ,  unsure  of  when  they’ve  crossed  the  line  between  insults  and  teasing  ,  both  of  which  were  commonplace  when  he  and  elijah  were  near  each  other  for  longer  than  five  minutes  .  “  my  brain  works  just  fine  ,  thank  you  very  much  .  ”  the  comment  is  quick  ,  it  gets  to  the  point  ,  and  moves  the  conversation  along  ,  the  dangerous  territory  they  were  headed  towards  successfully  averted  .  there  was  something  elijah’s  stubbornness  that  was  oddly  comforting  ,  something  so  easily  digestible  and  familiar  about  it  ,  something  about  it  felt  like  almost  coming  home  .  connor  takes  the  wine  glass  from  elijah’s  hand  ,  carefully  ,  as  to  not  brush  fingers  or  leave  lingering  touches  ,  knowing  the  avalanche  of  emotions  it  would  set  free  ,  “  i’m  convinced  you  only  come  over  for  the  allue  of  free  alcohol  .  ”  connor  nearly  chokes  on  the  sip  of  wine  he’s  taken  ,  horrifed  at  elijah’s  remark  ,  “  recipes  exist  for  this  very  reason  you  know  .  ”
