I’m going to yell more comprehensively about this at some point but it is in your own best interest to learn how to use multiple types of software and operating systems and so on. If you have an opportunity to try a different program or a new OS at a low cost you should do it because it means the next time you have to deal with something changing you aren’t going to be as stressed out about it.

That’s actually a huge, huge part of the reason that I’ve never installed xKit - every update breaks xKit and a huge amount of labor goes into making sure that people have the same tumblr experience that they did five years ago and when you get exposed to the new tumblr with none of the intervening five years of updates OF COURSE it’s disorienting and strange-looking and frustrating and seems impossible to use.

Like, yeah, I completely believe that it should be up to the user to choose how they’re going to interact with a product or software but that doesn’t mean that all desktop browsers should all have to look like XP because that’s what the vast majority of current computer users were most comfortable with first.

Everybody hated Windows 8 because it was unintuitive and weird and new and different and fuck it, we should have stuck it out and gotten used to the new thing because otherwise people get the idea that tech is static and that the websites we’re using now will always be the same as the first day we started using them and that tools and menus in programs will always be the same but if you want new features and innovation that can’t happen and you have to accept some level of change and that’s easier to do if you’re used to learning new things as they happen and getting used to new programs as you encounter them.

And look, I get HORRIBLE irrational rage flare-ups when I’m working in a new program and I don’t know how to do a thing. It is INTENSE. Sometimes I literally cry about it. But learning how to learn a program makes that better, learning how to look up tutorials or search for forum answers makes that less likely to happen.

it’s funny because Google used to be cool when they had no viable business model and hence weren’t constrained by physical reality and could just throw investor cash at groovy tech and give it away for free, then they found that the advertising they despised was actually incredibly lucrative and rationalised basing the whole company around it with a business model that essentially required them to either consume the world or die, no middle ground possible

Every discussion of Firefox eventually becomes, "Yeah, ok, you need a dozen extensions to make it usable, and the extensions then slow it down". So convenient and simple! Can't imagine why it has no market share.

You can install firefox right now today and have better security and privacy than chrome right out of the gate and with no add-ons or settings changes. You don't need any extensions to prevent firefox from collecting data about every single thing you ever do anywhere on the internet.

But also. Did you pull something with that reach? Misinterpreting "here are extensions you can use; be cautious with what extensions you DO use because some extensions can impact performance" to mean "this browser is unusable without add-ons that cause a performance hit" is either a hell of a backbend or D minus reading comprehension.
