When youuuu have a pig that good... You don't eat it in a single sitting.
Warren Kepler's beliefs don't fall away all at once.
Kep believes in a few core principles: humans are animals, the species should self-protect, emotions are a choice, and he has dedicated himself to his job so much that he doesn't get to enjoy his animal pleasures any more.
He is first shaken upon Maxwell's death and Jacobi's response. Above all Jacobi is a man he respects, and to see such pain in the man makes him self-reflect. Following that, the aliens dismiss his brutal form of species-protection, opting to instead gibe about some "process." By this point, Kep understands that he ought to get back in touch with his inner animal, because clearly there's something missing (especially given that he made a bad call with maxwell)
When Jacobi turns on him, kep's absolutely shocked. He knew the man was sad but always trusted him to keep his emotions in check. his first instict, as always, is to self-preserve. but once he bypasses that, he realizes that emotions are not really a choice. and for the first time he realizes he can't push people past their natural limits, as he tells minkowski
"she was twenty-eight!" Upon cutter's arrival kep finds a newfound hatred within his professional respect for the man. He preserves himself first and foremost, but the arm replacement is a hollow proxy at best. While conflicted between the years of work he has put into goddard and his hatred for cutter's methods (notably, both entirely new emotions, since he was supressing em all before this), Kepler trusts in the others to figure out an escape while he experiences inner turmoil.
By the finale, Kepler is a stranger to himself. He believes in his own humanity and is ready to come to terms with himself as a person rather than a weapon, but rather than face redemption, he chooses the easy path of betrayal. Clinging to a silly justification about putting himself in the right place and long pent-up feelings of enimity towards ms. young, kep kills her in his first legitmate fit of passion in many years. unpremeditated murder is difficult, however, and so he dies too, and never has to deal with the real work of understanding his guilt and shame for the many lives he's ruined.
Or to present an alternative hypothesis: He finally gives up on his dedication to self-protection. humans, after all, can care for themselves, as jacobi and minkowski have shown. and without that, the sheer weight of his emotions is far too overwhelming to bear.
Most likely, it's a mix of both, but Kep's a matter of perspective.

I think I may be a lovebert shipper now. in large part because I've been listening to janus descending and the main couple there is similar... even up to being forced into an awkward position to work together by zach libresco.
(also, I performed a scene between them in the role of hilbert and I do think that aspect makes them more interesting. I found myself going to Lovelace for comfort once or twice even as we were arguing which seems pretty... indicative)
pre-canon lovebert. but lovebert nonetheless.

Just had a really good workout, shaking like hell, and all I could think of was:
KEPLER
You ever ride Space Mountain?
Space mountain! Big roller coaster!
Over a hundred bucks to get into the park, then lines five hours long! You believe that?
Smile, Officer Eiffel! We get to do this for free!

headcanoning both jacobi and maxwell as trans is the funniest thing ever because it just means that this terrible, dad-humour-ass cishet white man accidentally adopted the queerest little freaks goddard had to offer and i think that's beautiful

the true problem with getting into wolf 359 in the year of out lord 2024 is that the show ended like 7 years ago and the fandom is like 12 people all sitting around on plastic lawn chairs. you want content? you have to make the content.

look I know Kepler is a massive piece of shit but he's a damn good officer in my book. He always knows just what to say to motivate people. He knows how to push his crew to their limits, but never goes past that. He's not afraid to relax and let off some steam, but he's always there when the situation needs him, ready to take charge, set objectives, and get people moving
