As a raging bisexual myself, I’ve yet to be presented with a piece of evidence that points to Alec’s alleged biphobia. His comments about Magnus’… rap sheet? I suppose? stem more from insecurity in his own inexperience rather than a distasteful bias against bi people. But please, present me with a quote that points to Alec frowning upon Magnus sleeping with specifically women, and then we’ll talk. 

Comparing the show to the books isn’t a fair argument. Yes, they have the same skeleton for plot points–and even then, it veers very hard to the left at one point–but that’s basically it. There was no way to fit the struggle of Magnus and Alec’s relationship throughout six books–a lot of which simply alluded to what was going on with Magnus and Alec–into a 3-season show. There was no way. I’m gonna say it again. There was no way. 

I’m also gonna say this: Alec was raised in a home where being who he was, in and of itself, was contradictory. He was told that being gay and a Shadowhunter was shameful. He had to hide away a part of himself to let the other flourish, and we all know which part was which. Add that on to the fact that, essentially, he was raised to believe that the Nephillim should be appreciated without a shadow of a doubt, and that Downworlders aren’t worth as much, and you have a man that is not able to compute his feelings for a male warlock. Yes, the way he treats others leaves quite a bit to be desired, but in CoHF, he acknowledges that. He takes the strides to better himself. He does better himself, actually.

Listen; the whole Camille thing was the biggest fuck up known to man. I’m not saying it was right. But if it’s looked at from Alec’s angle: he put everything he held dear–his family, his standing among the other Shadowhunters–for Magnus, whom Alec felt didn’t trust him with his life, his past, himself. He was grasping for straws, and he learned his lesson in an impossibly hard way. And that’s rectified, because Magnus knows that it was unfair. That book he gave Alec meant so much, because it was Magnus being gifted. His history, the biggest reason Alec felt so out of his depth.

You can’t stand on your soapbox and tell me Malec in the books was toxic when everything about the world they lived in, and their separate worlds that they occupied, went against them. In the end it was proved that they grew and made it through together. In fact, their relationship was probably one of the most realistic; lack of communication, struggling to believe every part of themselves is lovable, standing in front of someone’s history and being intimidated–they’re real and that’s why they’re so loved. Clary and Jace are the “Meant to Be” relationship. Simon and Izzy are the “Long Time Coming” relationship. Magnus and Alec are the “We Made It Through” relationship. They’re all reflective of what can happen in real life. Just because they weren’t the fantasy couple doesn’t mean their love is invalidated.
