like a man? no, like me
Summary: Maria was always the dreamer, the idealist. It just took some time figuring out where in life she could find someone or something that recognized that.
A/n -has some headcanons I’ve had about Maria // and I couldn’t forget the original relationship that started it all.

“Maria! Come down from there or mother will be cross with you again!”
The young girl hung low from the tree branches as her younger sister and child Emma, called for her. Maria was the middle child, eldest of the three girls, Adelaide and Emma, and youngest of her two brothers and sworn playmates, Philip and William. All who were children to the infamously famous and stringent, Lady Jane and Lord Alaric.
There were times when Maria longed for those days in the trees and to play with wooden swords with her brothers but the sobering reality of their life sunk its claws into everyone. It broke her heart when her brothers’ wives scoffed at her in disgust, when Adelaide’s fiancé spoke belligerently and when sweet Emma began to distance herself as well when Lady Jane called for her.
Maria was never one to fall into despair, but she felt herself slipping away as soon as she was married. She tried to find the pieces of herself again, perhaps reading or just admiring the view from the highest tree branches, until she returned from Emma’s wedding and found her favorite tree cut down at the behest of her husband.
There had been other acts of defiance before but Maria was insistent on what she knew would be her last one. To enroll and nearly defeat every knight who joined the joust that was in preparation for her last wedding anniversary feast.

Summary: Edward’s breakdown on The Jackdaw leaves you worried for him

Change your bloody course before it's too late!
Edward could still see their figures in his mind, and their words rattled through his brain. Thrashing around the bed in his captain's quarters, you could see him twisting into the sheets.
"No, no--! Damn you, leave me be!"
Rushing over to his side, you tried best to keep your distance but tried to soothe him. He may not be in his right mind at the moment, but you did not want to take a chance with limbs and fists flying.
"Edward, Ed! There's no one here! No one's there!"
He started to still as your voice broke through. In his semi-crazed state, it was a reassuring lull to him as the fears plagued his mind.
Gasps coming down to short pants before he took deep breaths, Edward could feel you brush back the hair that collected along with the sweat on his brow. His chest heaved as he tried to calm himself.
He didn't realize there were streaks of river that ran from his eyes until you cautiously reached over to wipe them away from his face.
Any other time, he would have been embarrassed for a soul to find him in such a pathetic state. For now, he was glad there was at least one who still stood by his side.

I can't believe I managed to push myself to work for 6 hours straight today and finish this one.
January's Codexmonthy prompt "Climb" and Ratonhnhakè:ton and Aveline scaling that frozen waterfall in Liberation. Of course I hate drawing nature can't draw frozen waterfalls, so it is as it is...
