Final Reflections
As I reflect on my recent “field Trip” to Paris and Germany, my first thought is that the instructors that only teach their classes (or sit on committees) but do not otherwise interact with our students are really missing out. While I am still blurry-eyed exhausted and several hours off on my sleep, I will always cherish my experience.
As I work next semester, preparing students for their careers, I am much better prepared to inject a global perspective.
In Paris, I was very surprised how easy it was to walk around and see and do everything I wanted to do while only knowing a few French words, sorry Madam Jergins. I did not talk to Parisians much but they did not seem to talk to each other that much anyway.
After telling my daughters about how much fun seeing the Eiffel tower at night was and how much I enjoyed rising a carousel late at night in the shadow of the tower, we decided to try to catch some of the type of magic and go to Manhattan on our vacation in a couple of weeks. I will also never forget Charles singing late at night in Rüdesheim or the party the German students hosted.
I asked some students what they will try to do differently when they get home and one or two said walk more and I said “eat outside more”. Well even though I have been falling asleep at 7pm, I have eaten outside twice so far and have walked over 10000 steps the last three days.
Well in a couple of weeks we will have to start working on next year’s trip, hopefully a few students from this year will join us.
