That “7 year old” line really opened my eyes to Kendall’s character. After that I completely understood why he was hysterical, and I think I now view his connection to the role of CEO in a different light. Of course, to the siblings the CEO is the ultimate way to gain Logan’s approval and therefore affection. But the way I see it, for Kendall it’s just a little deeper than that. He was a child when his universe of a father promised him the lead role of one of the most important companies in the world. He made his entire life around that. He studied business, went to Harvard, did what Logan wanted.. because he was told that it would be his. The entitlement breakdown of the finale is hard to watch but it makes sense, every single moment of Kendall’s life led to it. “I’m the eldest boy!” was his last resort. He was basically told as a kid that his purpose was to have the company, so ripping it out of his hands is leaving him empty and without a purpose. When he said he might die without it it’s so true because, in Logan’s own words (!!!!), he is a fucking nobody.
And fuck…. in the end, Kendall will never even be free; because he will always be that child who was promised something, built his whole life around that promise, and then simply never got it. He’s empty.
I watched a video essay from this guy on Youtube who broke down Naruto’s mannerisms and especially his use of ‘dattebayo’ and it was particularly interesting because he explained how ‘dattebayo’ is not a real word in the Japanese language or a word that Japanese people would ever use. Naruto uses it to draw attention to himself and it makes sense because as a child who was widely hated, neglected and ignored, it would make sense that he’s always trying to get people to notice him by highlighting his words and mannerisms.
What I don’t understand is why they would give Boruto the “dattebasa” if he didn’t have the same problem. Or make it into a family-quirk thing. That never made sense to me.
All of this I agree with and I don't like the boruto continuation.
But 1 thing I do have to say is that "da" "tte" "ba" and "yo" are all real "words" in japanese, they're particles. They do have meanings and stuff. and Japanese people use them all separately or they will say "da tteba" or "da yo" etc. But it's just a weird long string of particles to say "dattebayo" and is against japanese normality, thoughts and nature because it's 1) a bit self centered and rude and 2) tteba isn't usually viable at the end of a sentence UNLESS is is the absolute final phrase. "Yo" can't really grammatically go immediately after "tteba". because "tteba" has a "if this/if that that then ___ " meaning. Its originally meant to imply a continuing sentence and only works as a sentence ender if youre purposely ending your sentence early.. its hard to describe without a full lesson tbh. When naruto uses it, its like "if you hear what im saying!" But yea no one ends their sentences with "ttebayo". In my opinion "da" shouldn't be a part of the phrase because "da" is just the verb to be. If the verb is different then the da would change like "ittebayo", and he even says "FIGHTTEBAYO!!!"
