Syzygy
It’s dark tonight, pitch black and haunting. The stars suffocating tonight for the aesthetic bliss, so many people looking up and choking on their own mortality, but it’s all okay. At least for tonight, because I am holding your hand and the dew on the leaves makes the back of my tee shirt damp. We look into each other’s eyes, and we see the stars gasping on the stardust they’re made of. Right now though, I am holding your hand and pretending the sweat our love makes doesn’t make me cringe; ignoring the words pressing into the roof of my mouth begging to break free-and every single one of them is poison. I pretend to cough to the side but I gag on the blood and ink that fills my mouth. My blood is gold and silver and ethereal, but like everything pretty in life, it kills.
I turn back to you and smile, but it is all wrong because the ichor that is my blood stains my teeth and burns your lips when we kiss. Everything is wrong. The world shifts and I can feel the bones in my body become dust and I think this is what exploding feels like, or maybe heartbreak. Maybe I have already exploded and you will spend the rest of your life holding my ashes and you will look up to the sky looking for shooting stars and begging to fall away too. Maybe we have always been our own stars, and the warmth I get from you is the aftereffect of your supernova or the shower of affection that rains on you is just what is left of my solar system.
�� I ignore the stardust that coats my throat as I speak words covered in glitter and gold, and I watch my sentences cover you like a blanket- or maybe safety net. You try to hold onto them but by the time you think of it, I’m already gone and I’ve packed my words with me.

Stars are my favourite thing.
So many of them, so small to our eyes and yet so big in reality.
So missable and yet so beautiful you couldn’t afford to miss them.
The nightlights of the sky, filling the vast expanse of space with wonder.
The subjects of many poems, many descriptions, many stories.
So many stars.
Some near, some further than you could imagine.
Many we do not know exist and likely will never know exist.
So many stars, untouched and unknown by the human mind.
Some so close they once were regarded as one.
Some big enough to die almost as spectacularly as they lived.
Some even bigger, so beautiful that their absence takes away the surrounding beauty, with only a sad, cold pit in the shadow.
But those shadows?
Around them are nebulas, with planets orbiting those stars and meteorites like fireworks.
And on the outer edge of one of those nebulas, spun in a spiral, so fascinating and yet a work of nature?
There’s a star there, a smaller star compared to some but quite average.
There’s a few planets and dwarf planets orbiting it.
Including one particular green and blue planet.
The only known life-bearing planet, actually.
Orbiting a star, surrounded by other stars, in a nebula like many others.
But the only one we know to be able to hold life.
That seemingly ordinary planet in a seemingly ordinary solar system in a seemingly ordinary nebula managed to be extraordinary.
And you can too.
