Kleo pressed her lips together, still hesitating. Really, the person she should tell about this was her mother. Or, at the very least, Aunt Amina. Not that she'd really know anything about it, but she'd be the least likely to tell her mum.
But she didn't want to tell her family. It was probably nothing. She was just overthinking it.
"We had this weird moment, where I was trying to...y'know, talk him down off the ledge or whatever. And--I, like, remembered his grandparents? And him telling them no about some money, but...the thing is...I don't think he ever told me about them?"

Wadjet was not, in fact, into musical theater. She had scolded Kleo about it, actually. Saying that it was distracting her, but what was Kleo supposed to do?! She couldn't let Pip down. He had cast her in a pretty big role. Even if she didn't have a lot of lines, she had a lot of stage time. She had memorized the script on one read through, so she didn't actually need to run lines all that much.
(Besides, she did enjoy it.)
But that wasn't why Kleo was here, so it wasn't even on her mind.
Instead, she was trying to stand with her shoulders back. Confident, the way Ramavo stood. Like her mother stood. She was Schreiber. She was good at her magic. Pepa would want her as a student.
"I was wondering--"
She felt Wadjet shift on her neck, the muscles brushing against the back of Kleo's neck. She had done it wrong. Starting over.
"I came to ask if you were looking to take on any apprentices at the moment. I am a water witch." She didn't know if Pepa knew that actually. "I am nearly emerged, but I need to keep up my studies and would be honored to have you guide me. Oh, and, uhm--I brought you this. For your consideration."
Kleo stepped forward, head bent as she held out a small, painted seashell cupped in both hands. "It is charmed so anything jewelry put in it cleans and shines itself."

Kleo didn't mind Cruz's rambling, it kept them from the silence that would inevitably descend if Kleo was in charge of the conversation.
"Oh, I-I don't know about that," Kleo said, blushing a little at the 'track star' comment. She did like to run, and she was decently good at it, but she had never really competed. Except with her sisters and cousins. Sports like that weren't taken seriously by her mother. Even Ramavo's football was seen as frivolous.
"I like to run, but--" she gave a little shrug. "Honestly, I am trying to get back into shape because I realized I haven't done it much since coming here. I used to go every morning." She tacked that last part on because, even though she did not consider herself a runner, per se, she was competitive.

"Well," Kleo pulled a little bit of a face, feeling...somewhat defensive of Pip, "it was a big thing. I think he just got stage fright. I found him under a table."
She was unaware that this was, perhaps, a detail Pip would rather keep to himself. The detail, of course, led to another detail that Kleo remembered. One that she had been thinking about a lot, but wasn't sure what to do with.
Everything about it had been so strange. The memory wasn't even a memory. It felt real and tangible to her. She had known the faces of Pip's grandparents as if they were her own.
"Uhm, can I--ask you something, actually? And you've got to not tell anyone else, okay?"

Kleo had been very pleased when she found out that Howl would be coaching her in the Tournament! Obviously, everyone in Ingary knew them. And, even though her mother thought he was a bit frivolous, even she knew what a good sorcerer they were. Which meant she had been impressed when Kleo had relayed the news.
That was, until she found out that Lilith Clawthorne was taking on trainees too--and hadn't chosen her.
That meant that Kleo wasn't in the top spot.
Which meant Kleo was going to have to train even harder.
"Yes, Master," Kleo said with a little nod.
"I can manipulate water and pull it out of most sources. So I will be able to use the grass and maybe even water bottles." She smirked a little at that. "Anything within my range, which is about twenty feet. I have even better direction and control with my wand, but if I am not allowed it in the competition, I should still be able to fare decently well." An advantage of elemental magic, where wandless magic was learned along with wandwork.
"And, uhm," here, she hesitated a little. "I also have a photographic memory. So, anything you give me to learn, I can learn it easily."

Kleopatra actually agreed regarding Paris, so, even though she didn't see Amity's look--she wouldn't have been offended by it.
"Ugh, no--not really."
That wasn't exactly true. She had a hotel room all to herself (thank the Gods, she had not wanted to stay with everyone else in a cramped AirBnB.) But still, it had felt draining to her.
"We were basically rehearsing the whole time. Only for Pip to nearly back out of the whole thing last minute. I could've strangled him."

Kleo was somewhat flustered by Pepa's enthusiastic greeting, but she supposed she shouldn't be that surprised. Senora Madrigal was always like that. Big, loud, and bright. She didn't mind it so much. People like that made it easier for Kleo to just blend into the background.
But--she needed to not do that.
So, she said thank you about the hat and no thank you about the water. It wasn't until Pepa mentioned the house that Kleo actually properly smiled.
"Oh, it doesn't bother me at all," she said. Haven Hall wasn't nearly as friendly, but still--it was nice to be back in a house that breathed. "My manor in Ingary is enchanted too." In fact, it made her feel just a little bit more at home.
"This is Wadjet, by the way, my family's familiar," Kleo shrugged to gesture to the large cobra draped on her shoulders. "I hope it is alright I brought her along?"
"A pleasure to meet you, Señora Madrigal." The snake flicked out her tongue as she lifted her head and fanned out her crown a little.

Back home in Ingary, Kleo went running every day. She woke up early and laced up her trainers, ready to greet the morning. Sometimes, she ran with Ramavo (it was the only time they got along) or Nandi, sometimes alone. She did yoga with Nefertiti and pilates with Makenda (and Nandi again.)
But she had fallen out of routine in Swynlake, until now.
Her mother wanted her to enter the Clawthorne Tournament. Which really meant her mother wanted her to win the Tournament. And now that she had entered, her sights were set on first prize. Her pride wouldn't let her come home with less.
She had just finished her third circuit on the track when she spotted someone making their way onto the turf. Slowing down, she stopped, taking an earbud out when she recognized Cruz.
Tumblr media
"Hey, Cruz!" she said with a smile, stopping by the fence to reach for her water bottle. "Coming to run?"

Kleo didn't usually have the problem of reading the same paragraph ten times. Her photographic memory let her recall anything she read...as long as she absorbed it at some point. But with the stupid ticking clock, it was impossible to concentrate.
She leaned forward, elbows on the desk, rubbing her temples. She wasn't kidding about the migraine, she could feel it starting to throb behind her eyes.
"Ugh, I wish it was still the holiday," she complained. Which was unlike her, because Kleo liked school.

The clock on the wall of the old library kept ticking.
Kleo was trying to concentrate. It was revision time and she was stressed! She had papers to write and projects to do, but the clock on the wall kept ticking. It wouldn't stop. It kept reminding her about time. How it was passing, no matter how much she tried to keep her head in her books and her thoughts on her research. It kept pulling her out and guiding her thoughts to other things. The summer. What she was going to do.
The weirdness that had happened with Pip.
With a growl, Kleo leaned back in her chair, pulling her headphones off and glancing over at Amity, on the other side of the table. "Are you hearing this clock? It's so freaking loud, it's giving me a migraine." Kleo rubbed at her forehead.

Kleo didn't know much about Pepa Madrigal. She was aware of the Madrigals, of course, nearly everyone in town knew at least one of them. (She knew Mirabel from school and Pip's play.) She knew that Pepa was the mayor's secretary. She knew she was in Pip's play, which should make her cool, but just made her more intimidating. She also knew that she had been involved in containing a demon a few years ago at prom...
And she knew she was a storm sorceress.
Which, as far as Kleo knew, was the closest thing to a water witch in Swynlake. And Kleo had promised her mother that she would keep up with her studies, only to get to school and promptly forget all about it as she dove into her very Mundus assignments. But now, with the tournament coming up (her mother surely expected her to place, at least) and the summer rising up to meet her, she knew that she needed to find a Master.
So, she had been pointed in the direction of La Casita and stood in front of its doors on an overcast afternoon. She took a deep breath and raised her hand to knock on the door, clutching her CV tightly in one hand as a few drops of rain fell onto it. In her other, she held a box with a gift inside it for Señora Madrigal. Draped over her shoulders was Wadjet.
The door opened almost as soon as she stepped back, revealing Isabela Madrigal. Of course, Kleo knew who she was.
"Can I help you?" Isabela said with a smile.
"H-hi, I was, uhm, wondering if Señora Madrigal was home?"
"Which one?" Isabela's perfect eyebrows raised.
"Oh, uhm, Señora Pepa?"
"Ah, yes! She is, actually. Please, come in." Isabela turned back into the house, not bothering to close the door.
As soon as Kleo stepped over the threshold, she knew why. The magic tingled up her spine and Wadjet lifted her head curiously. The door closed behind them and the floor tiles jingled.
"Tía Pepa! Kleo is here to see you!"

Maybe This Time || Pleo
Summary: Before Starring Pip's big showcase, Pip runs off in a panic. Kleo finds and inspires him. :)
tw: more anxiety and self-loathing!!
@clio-of-hesiod
Pip Seville
Day of the Show.
T-minus fifteen minutes.
Pip was nowhere to be found.
It was NOT his fault. The past 24 hours had been emotionally grueling. Who could blame him for waking up with his anxiety SCREAMING on high? He'd tried to be chill, and managed the Illusion of Normalcy all the way to the venue, through their soundcheck, and up to the point of them getting into the costumes. But then the Moment was on top of him. Cue the brain buzz. Cue Pip ripping off his mic and darting out, shouting that he was going to the bathroom. He did not return.
Instead, he had crawled underneath the prop cart!! And he was going to stay here until the performance was over, screw his future, screw NYC, screw everything!
Kleopatra Schreiber
Kleo did not want to be on the hunt for Pip, since she was pretty sure that she wouldn't know what to say if she did find him. She had no idea where he'd even gone! Was she supposed to be mad he'd run off? Or worried? She was oscillating between the two.
It was all hands on deck, though, to try and find him. After all, they couldn't go on stage without him.
Kleo was only half-heartedly looking, to be honest, which was why she'd even flipped up the cloth on the prop table, because surely--
"Pip?!" Kleo yelped and dropped the cloth back down. She reached out and grabbed it again. "Uhm, you know it's, like, fifteen minutes to curtain right?"
Pip Seville
The curtain flipped up. FUCK.
Wait, it was Kleo. Oh, well that was fine then! If it was Milo, Pip would have started crying. If it was Mirabel, Pip would have started crying. If it was Phineas, Pip would have used the prop cart as a weapon to run him over! But it was Kleo-- who Pip liked and respected and was trying to impress so...
...well this was embarrassing and not going to help his quest to become her BFFL.
"I can't go out there!" He blurted, anxiety too high to summon some kind of quip about, idk, prop cart meditation being part of his process. He pulled the cloth back down. "Just-- tell everyone its canceled!"
Kleopatra Schreiber
"What do you mean?" Kleo asked, eyebrows pinching together.
"Everyone is waiting on you. Did something happen?"
Pip Seville
Everyone is waiting on you.
YEAH!! YEAH THEY WERE AND HE WAS GOING TO DO A BAD JOB AND TANK HIS OWN DREAM.
Or even worse-- no one was going to laugh at the jokes. No one was going to cheer at the climax. Everyone was going to look at each other with pity in their eyes and give him half-hearted applause. The work he slaved over would end with a whimper, not a bang, and he would be so embarrassed that he'd dragged everyone to Paris to do this for him,, that he spent everyone's money, that he wasted everyone's time.
Which was a lot to say so what came out was a hyperventilated-- "I just, I just, I can't do this, I can't fail again."
Kleopatra Schreiber
Pip was hyperventilating and Kleo glanced around, hoping and wishing that someone more equipped to handle this might walk by. Someone who actually knew Pip. Or wasn't horrenduously socially awkward (to the point where this situation was making her want to start hyperventilating.)
She wasn't the person who comforted! She was the one who was comforted! By others! It made her wish for her cousin Nefertiti, who always knew what to say.
Just channel Nefertiti, Kleo told herself.
Taking a deep breath, she crouched down.
"What are you talking about? You're not gonna fail. The play is good. We're all here because we believe in it." Okay, maybe that was a bit of a lie, because she knew she was here because he'd asked her to be and she was bad at saying no, but she'd had fun too! And regardless of intentions everyone was here. And the show was pretty good!
Pip Seville
"No, I am going to fail. That's what I do. We don't know each other that well, Kleo, but I am a big, total failure. I had to write this play because no one was going to give me the lead, because--I'm not actually talented! I have no range, I'm a character actor, no one takes me seriously, and I'm not good enough to go to NYU!" he rambled, tears filling his eyes as he gripped his knees.
Kleopatra Schreiber
Kleo blinked a little. She was--so confused now, because this was not the Pip that she was used to seeing. That Pip was obnoxiously confident. The kind of person that walked into a room and stole the spotlight because they were bold and loud. The opposite of the kind of person that Kleo was.
He'd put together this whole thing! All by himself! Kleo could never do something like that. She could barely tell people it was her birthday, (she hadn't told anyone, actually), because it felt too self-centered.
"Pip, you're just--stressed and spiraling but we've come this far. You've got to just, uhm--get through it! It's just pre-show jitters. C'mon, the show must go on!" Kleo reached out to take Pip's wrist and give it a little tug.
Pip Seville
Yes, Pip was stressed and spiraling, and these were pre-show jitters! There was a little voice in Pip's brain that knew this objectively and was jumping up and down, trying to get his attention so they could take some deep breaths and self-regulate!
Unfortunately, that really was a mini-version of inner Pip. Just a blip on the radar. The combination of little sleep, too much coffee, and an ill-timed emotional revelation had added up to the perfect anxiety storm he just couldn't wrangle alone. And so his first instinct when Kleo grasped him was to pull away.
"I can't! I'm not ready!' Pip squeaked. "My entire self-worth is riding on this show, it's too much pressure!"
Kleopatra Schreiber
Kleo's grip tightened on Pip's arm when he went to pull away. She didn't even think about it--it was all instinct. Pip moved and Kleo did too. Keeping a hold of his arm, putting her other hand on his other arm.
As she touched him, she saw a flash of something--faces that she didn't recognize, but did. Halmoni and Halabeoji.
She should pull away, she wanted to pull away, but it was like she was magnetized there.
When she spoke again, her voice was much calmer.
"You are ready, Pip. You've been working on this your whole life and even if you fail, it won't matter because you will just keep going. That is what you do. You pick up the pieces and you keep going."
Pip Seville
Pip had been working on this his whole life. Because the musical, in a lot of ways, was his life. Maybe he was not a very original person, so he had just spat out his life story and jazzed it up with...well, literal jazz squares. Added the ol razzle dazzle-- costumes, lights, sets, funny jokes, a dead mother instead of an ill one who still couldn't get her shit together. Still, it was all in there. Writing it had been so cathartic and in the end, he'd been proud. He thought to himself-- I made something. Maybe I can make something else.
He had forgotten that feeling-- that pride-- among the stress of the week and his own jealousy and loneliness. But Kleo was right. Take away the razzle dazzle-- take away Pip's friends even, pair them off so they went two by two down the proverbial aisle of life, leaving him behind-- and he still had something.
Art. Himself. His voice, his sense of humor, his passion, his courage, his drive to pick up the pieces and keep going, even when it felt like he couldn't.
The tears were still brimming in his eyes, but some of the roaring anxiety had calmed. "I...I guess that's true..." he murmured tentatively.
Kleopatra Schreiber
Pip was calming, Kleopatra could feel it. She nodded, letting out a little breath herself.
"You've overcome so much already, Philip," she said solemnly, holding Pip's watery gaze. If she wanted, she could wave a hand pluck those tears right from his eyes, but she kept her hands where they were.
"You love theatre, it is in your heart. It was why you wouldn't take your Halmoni and Halabeoji's deal. Theater is what you were born for. Do not give up, just because it is hard right now. Your passion will pay off. Your perseverance. All the greatest artists have failed before. You are not alone."
Pip Seville
The tears in Pip's eyes slipped down his cheeks, but they weren't painful anymore. They were cool and refreshing-- a release of all the stress he was holding. He grasped Kleo's hand back and let out a breath that felt like it weighed a ton. "Y-yeah, you're right, you're right--" he began to nod vigorously.
It didn't even occur to him in the moment that it was weird that Kleo mentioned his Halmoni and Halabeoji. Instead, the memory of that fateful dinner washed through him like it had just happened. He could feel all his hurt and hunger and frustration, but beyond that-- his conviction. He hadn't ever compromised who he was. Not for his mother, or any boy, or his rich, asshole grandparents.
If he could stand up for himself then, he could do this now. And fuck anyone who didn't get the vision! HE got the vision!
He shook his head and then wiped at his tears. "Oh god, sorry, I am being-- so cringe right now. But you're right! I can do this!" He started to pump himself up. "We are going to go out there and we are going to win!"
Kleopatra Schreiber
Pip let out a breath and so did Kleo. Wow, that had been kind of intense. She gave Pip's hands another squeeze.
Wow, had she actually...convinced him? And with very little trying? Her?
She was surprised at herself, surprised at Pip too. (And what had been up with that...vision? Who the heck were Halmoni and Halabeoji? Whatever! Not thinking about it right now, they had a show to put on!)
"Yes! Exactly!" Kleo said and smiled. She let go of Pip so she could stand up. "Okay, we better go round everyone up now! We can say, uhm, you had a wardrobe emergency and were in the bathroom or something." Kleo was not a good liar but, well, hopefully no one would ask her.
Pip Seville
Pip scrambled up, once again wiping at his face. He'd need to reapply his make-up, but-- it was fine!! He could do that, no problem. They still had six minutes till showtime.
...SIX MINUTES TILL SHOWTIME?!
Okay, time to shift into show mode. No more fucking around. He beamed, and despite Kleo not really being touchy-feely, he couldn't help but put his arms around her in a quick hug. "Thank you! And also-- thank you for totally understanding that this is embarrassing and we must lie to our friends. You're awesome, Kleo."
And then he pulled away and shook out his hands. "LET'S GO WIN A PLAY FESTIVAL!"
He stamped off confidently, starting his pre-show vocal exercises, as if they were a jubilant war cry.

"Oh, well--I guess we can't speak for every single person," Kleo said with a little shrug. She eyed Edric for a moment as she took a sip of her vanilla milkshake that she'd ordered.
Kleo tried to stay out of gossip, but she listened to it a lot from her sisters and her cousins and even her mother and aunts. She rarely added anything herself, but since being friends with Emira, and even Amity, she--had started partaking just a bit more...
Besides, sometimes, it was harmless.
"Though, did you see how Milo and Luca were? I didn't realize they had a thing but it kind of looked like it, didn't it?"

Kleo was also covered in powder, but she also couldn't stop grinning from ear to ear as she and Edric took their seats at the ice cream shoppe. It was late and Kleo should probably be tired. (She usually was at this time of the evening). But! She was still bouncing from adrenaline.
"Yeah, it did? Didn't it?" Kleo said with a breathless, amazed sort of voice. She laughed a little. "Everyone seemed to have fun for the most part!"

Yeah, Kleo wasn't surprised. It seemed that no one knew when the dreams happened. Or why, either. Not that Kleo was particularly concerned about that part. After all, Kleo was also from a magical place, magical strangeness was par for the course in places where magic was allowed to flourish. It didn't upset her, even if she was embarrassed. To her, it was just the natural order of things.
"Yeah, they mentioned all of that at orientation. It's similar in Ingary." Hey, people tried to summon demons wherever there was a lot of magic. She'd been through her fair share of lock downs. Though, also, Ingary had a much more intensive screening process for foreigners. And a robust magical police force. Those things were handled quickly and quietly usually, before they got out of hand.
And, well, yes, magical weather was a problem also. They just built infrastructure that could withstand it. Most buildings were built with magic too, so the wards usually kept most things out.
"Not that I'm particularly looking forward to it. From what I can tell...Swynlake doesn't have very good infrastructure in place to deal with that sort of thing."

Of course, sorcerers continued learning their whole lives. At least, that was what her mother always told her. That was what made a good sorceress. Someone who was always learning. She figured Amity probably meant like...all the basics! The kind of thing you'd learn before you Emerged.
She couldn't possibly mean everything.

Well, Kleo didn't know about that just because Howl Pendragon was also in town and Kleo knew that he was basically a celebrity. If she got them to be her master, her mother would probably fall over herself with joy. But...Kleo didn't think she could learn much from a telekinetic sorcerer.
A weather witch, though? Even a nobody one? Amity was right. That was impressive.
Besides, she'd probably make Kleo happiest.
