No. No no no no no no no! Mother, when I said watch over me this is not what I had in mind! A BLIND DATE CONTEST? What is wrong with you!? I know you always wanted me to settle down and stay home, but this is going a bit far, don't you think? Especially since, IN CASE YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN, I have NO ability to talk to women.
Oh Mom...why would you do this to your only son. Is this punishment? This is not how I thought I'd atone...
I'm going to go bury my head in the dirt. Maybe they won't find me there.
Keep a less than diligent eye on me, Mom.
...and fine I'll do it.

He nodded again to acknowledge her name and smiling back. "That's all light." Catching himself he tried to fix his words and hastily said, "I mean sight! No! No! Right! All right it...it...it's all...right." And slowly but surely his entire face lit up in embarrassment. Sabotaged once again. He turned away quickly, even after she had left the room.
While Elli was gone, Cliff took the time to wander around the shoppe, looking here and there and really noticing everything more than he did when he was just trying to look at anyone but the person who spoke to him. It was very much like the person who owned it, Cliff thought. He figured he'd have just as much trouble speaking to this building as he would a girl. The thought made him chuckle lightly. He glanced outside at one point and noticed the snow starting to lay on the ground. He shivered instinctively; he'd been outside on nights such as this and it had not been very pleasant. Just being indoors was a blessing.
Hearing footsteps, Cliff turned to see the girl stepping back into the room. He wandered over to her and took the cup in his hands, hovering his face over it as the steam rose to meet his cheeks. "Thank you," he said lightly and began to take small sips. He hadn't had tea in some time, and was very happy to have it on such a night. He wondered if she'd notice the half-eaten tray of cookies as well. During his pacing, Cliff had eaten his fair share of the treats and was beginning to feel a little bad about it.
At the offer, Cliff looked to Elli and contemplated an answer. Slowly, trying to pick the right words, he said, "S-Sure. I...I can...h-help if you'd like..." Cooking was something he wasn't amazing at, but he had learned a thing or two while surviving on his own. In fact, he had even come to enjoy it. He shrugged, adding, "Only if y-you'd like..." He brought the tea back up to his lips and sipped, following her to the other room.

"Water...please," he answered. It had been so long since he had had something other than water, Cliff wasn't sure there was anything else to drink. Maybe someday he'd look for something different, but it was all the same to him, really. If he was thirsty, he drank water; that made sense, right? He wasn't very complicated.
Cliff was taken aback by the sudden offer and waved his hands between the two. "No...you don't need to do that...I...I'm flattered...it's very generous...wait..." Everything he said, however, seemed to fall upon deaf ears. The two were obviously in a conversation all their own, and Cliff's objections were just background noise that was sure to shushed anyway.
When the deal was made, Cliff closed his eyes and silently thanked his mother for this opportunity. He reopened them to address Greg and smiled sincerely. "Thank you...I...I will do my best to help out around the ranch. I'll pay you back whenever I can." He knew he only had a limited amount of funds, and wondered if helping on the ranch would provide a stable enough income for him to stay...well anywhere. But that was a worry for another time.
He blinked, confused, at the older man's wink and wondered exactly what it meant. Instead of asking, however, Cliff simply nodded awkwardly and said, "Uh...y-yes sir. I will." He was completely oblivious to what any of it meant.
When Greg had gone, Cliff looked back at Ann and said very matter-of-factually, "You two look alike."
Bulletin Board Request - Open
Ann was happy to see Cliff finally set aside his menu and look at her again. It always pleased her to see someone come out of their shell, even if sometimes she had to do so by force - as was often the case for poor Mary.
Ann didn’t have a chance to continue her conversation, however, as her Uncle stepped in.  It was odd to see Cliff talk to him, as he seemed like a different person when he talked to her uncle.  She couldn’t help but wonder why, being rather dense in such areas as she was.
"Curry rice and soup and salad. Coming right up. Anything to drink, Cliff?" Greg was visibly pleased at the sight of the young man, although he was at least not as obnoxious as Ann’s dad was whenever Ann was with a boy. He at least resisted the urge to tease and interrogate.
"Oh, Uncle! I’d like to rent out a room for Cliff here for a while. While he works with us, he’ll need a place to stay. I don’t mind payin—"
Greg looked at his niece with a look of amusement in his eyes and waved her offer aside, “Don’t you worry about that. If he’s helping you guys out, I’m happy to lend him a room until he’s back on his feet. So, take your time and rest up, Cliff.” he winked at the younger man before adding, “Try and keep a close eye on Ann here. She’s a good girl, but she doesn’t always think before she acts, if you catch my drift.”
"U-Uncle?!" Ann’s face reddened as she stammered at him in surprise, her face reddening as she glowered at him from across the table. That traitor!

Cliff offered a chuckled in response. "Yea...I suppose we are." His stuttering had become less of a problem in the late night. Perhaps it was because his thoughts wavered back and forth from reality and not. Or maybe because he felt as if some of the answer were more to himself. Whatever the reason, Cliff had more a grasp on his speech than usual. If only in these moments.
His blue eyes drifted to her when she nudged him. Taking a moment, again, to ponder the answer, he wondered why exactly. A sly smile caught his face and he shrugged. "What is a pretty, though intoxicated, girl doing out here with a dirty looking hobo?" He laughed at his own description, because if anything it was honest. Then he said, "I'm not wasting my breath. I only talk to people who take the time to talk to me." He looked at her once again and nodded. "Thank you, Muffy."
Then he thought of something and asked, "What brought you to Mineral Town anyway?"

Cliff became even more embarrassed by her comment, and tried his best to smile. In the end, it looked just as awkward as it felt and he gave up trying rather quickly. Though, perhaps she hadn't noticed since she had quickly wiped at her face once he started to grin. Cliff shrugged it off with a bit of relief, hoping she hadn't taken any notice.
At the mention of his name, the man became confused. That, however, was quickly remedied and he let out a low sigh. Word about him had gotten around town, and he wasn't so sure that was a good thing. The last thing he wanted was people digging into his past, and the closer and friendlier they got, the more suspicious he'd have to be. But his brow curved up and he smiled somewhat; if he had anyone to blame for it, it would probably be Ann. He didn't need his presence to be kept a secret, but he didn't need it to be a grand festival of arrival either. The whole thing threw him off; he just wasn't used to this sort of thing.
Speaking of Ann, the girl in front of him reminded him of her a great deal. They both had a very talkative air about them, though Cliff had to admit, this one seemed only a little more girly than Ann was. Either way, his speech impediment was sure to set it.
"Claire?" Now that he thought about it, he had heard mention of her more than once, but it was unlike Cliff to go looking for someone just because he had heard about them. "Oh uh, I'm C-Cliff, as you guessed...I su-uppose..." he said while glancing to and from the sky. "It's nice to m-meet you." His eyes rose up to hers. "You're a farmer...? Like...D-Doug and Ann?" Cliff hadn't really been anywhere long enough to know the difference between rancher and farmer, and just thought of the two as the same.
His ears twitched at the name of the town. "I was...I was just there actually. On my way b-back to...well I mean..." And his sentence unwound itself. Home? Was that what he wanted to say? Though he could hardly call the Inn a home. It was, however, the warmest place he'd slept in months. Cliff blinked several times at her comment. "What makes y-you think I travel?" he said obliviously.
His expression became calm at the mention of home and he offered one last question, "Has...has Mineral T-Town always b-been your...home?"

Her sapphire eyes smiled, reflecting the scarlet hues and violet gradients. Each ephemeral color that faded from the sky had left a lasting impression on her, though she could have probably executed the fireworks a little more gracefully. Claire chuckled easily, as her expression softened at his bashfulness. “That’s great! As long as it brings a smile to someone’s face, or in your case, almost brings a smile to your face, I’d be satisfied!” Claire swept her bangs back to get a better look at the stranger. Oh!
He wasn’t much of a stranger— Cliff, was it? She never had gotten the chance to chat with him much at all, but she still considered him a good person. Anyone who presided in Mineral Town long enough was a friend, after all! She blinked, taking in his reserved expression and nodding in understanding. “Oh! Oh, whoops! Haha…ha!” Claire immediately wiped at her face in a playful embarrassment, “I must have missed a spot here, there and everywhere. Firework ashes aren’t exactly the easiest things to clean off.”
Claire shot him an easygoing smile, encouraging him to open up wherever he could. “Thanks… Cliff, was it? I’ve heard about you from the neighbors! The name’s Claire, Claire Wright, if you didn’t know. I’m the farmer that settled down here,” Since introductions were always the slowest parts, she patiently entwined her fingers together as she waited for his own introduction. She didn’t know much about him after all, aside from what she heard from the neighbors. Just little snippets about him being shy or always preferring to be alone… Claire had always wanted to talk to him herself, though.
No one could judge a character for you, so it was always good to meet them yourself. And she wasn’t displeased in the least. “You know, I got those fireworks from Forget-Me-Not, the next town over. Have you ever been there before?” She blinked at him kindly before staring off at the starry velvet skies.  ”You just seem like the traveling type, after all…”
"I personally love traveling myself, but Mineral Town’s my home. So I find myself being pulled back here, like waves ebbing back to shore."

I've almost been in this town for a whole month. Everyone in Mineral Town is very kind, Mom...just like you. In fact, sometimes, and when I least expect it, I can see you in the people of this town. Do you think Cassie feels this way sometimes? I hope she's doing well, wherever she is.
I like this town...but I can hear the wind calling me every now and again. Calling me to go off and see what else lies ahead.
But...it might not be so bad to go off and see those things...if I have a place to come back to.
...maybe, if I can keep a profit going...this could be the place.
As always, keep an eye on me mom.

The minutes ticked by without notice as he stared off into the dark. It was hard to tell where the sky ended and the water began, and the flurries that fell through the air looked small, but beautiful. The whole scene reminded Cliff of the world and how small he was in the darkness of space. It was peaceful and he let his mind wander.
So much that he forgot there was another person next to him. His heart rate, having returned to normal, took another spike when she spoke. Back in reality, Cliff thought about her question. He was going to pose one himself, What did she mean by here? But decided the answer to that really didn't matter. He wasn't sure why he was anywhere, be it this town, this dock, or even this time. He just knew he was. It was a hard question to answer, and he found himself taking more time than usual to find a response.
"...Living," was what he finally said. Atoning, is what he thought.

What were you thinking? Are you insane? If someone were to see you, you can kiss this town goodbye! All good and viable arguments floated through his head, practically screaming at him to take off the other direction. But that wasn't how Cliff operated, and even his defiant brain knew that. His actions might be mistaken for courage, but that was far from the case. Cliff was terrified of girls, and if her legs hadn't been so wobbly he was sure she'd notice just how shaky his were. All of that aside, Cliff couldn't leave anyone out in the cold, even if it meant facing his fears. He was a gentleman at heart.
Of course, hearing his name so close to his ear made him want to recoil back into his skin. A shiver flew up his spine as she fell into him and he was pretty sure that he could now keep warm in this cold just by the heat on his face alone. His cheeks turned bright red and he did his best to hide it.
Regaining focus (or what was left of it) Cliff took notice of where she pointed and then helped her in that direction. It was a slow process, but it was better than rushing and falling into the ocean. When the two reached the end of the pier, Cliff helped her to a sitting position on the end and then watched to make sure she was balanced before letting go.
It took a moment of thought, but in the end, he decided to sit down next to her as well. Flinging his legs over the end of the pier, he glanced out over the water and watched the snow gently fall into darkness.
"Wow..." he said softly.

Well it certainly sounded like the sort of place he hoped to find on his travels. "Yes..um...please. I would li-like that...thank you, Ann." He had put the menu down and was smiling softly toward her. He was happy to have someone help him around; not everyone had been so kind on his adventure. In fact, kindness for someone with no money, he found, had been a rarity.
Before he could respond about the curry, a man greeted them at the table. Cliff could tell the two were related simply by the looks they would give each other. That and, well, the color of their hair. Cliff couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief. A man, finally it was a man! He took the older man's hand in his and gave a firm shake. "Thank you, sir. It's nice to meet you," he said as if a different person. Although his voice was still small and fragile sounding, it held no stammer.
Cliff's eyes lit up again as he looked to the man. "May I have the curry rice...please?" Just the thought of his favorite meal made him want to dance.
Bulletin Board Request - Open
"Ya, Mother’s Hill?" It sounded like a question, although obviously Cliff wouldn’t have heard of it. "It’s a nice little hike actually. I can take you up there sometime, if you want to check it out." Or he could explore for himself, of course, but Ann had no problem playing tour guide. Besides, getting out and about might help Cliff open up more. "We could even ride up with the horses." Presuming he knew how to ride. Ann just assumed everyone did.
While Cliff ducked behind his menu, Ann found an amused smile crossing her face. This guy was definitely shy. Like Maria. It was cute, in an odd sort of way. Definitely not at all like Kai. “Hm? Oh, ya. Take it you’re fond of curry? My uncle makes it really good, too.”
As if on cue, her uncle finally made his way over with a friendly smile at the two of them. He was the spitting image of Ann’s dad, the two of them often mistaken for twins, although her dad was older by two years.
"Hey, Ann." he cast a curious look at Ann, raising his eyebrows, and then looked back to his niece. "New friend?"
"AH! Uncle Greg, this is Cliff. He’s going to be helping us out at the ranch for a while." the red head looked over to Cliff and smiled helpfully, "Cliff, this is my Uncle Greg."
"Pleasure to meet you, Cliff." Greg held out a friendly hand towards the brunette. "Welcome to Mineral Town. Hey, can I get you two anything?"
"Right, the soup and salad for me." Ann replied, "And a fruit juice, please. Anything Cliff wants is on me tonight. Cliff?" the red head glanced at her companion and tipped her head to one side, awaiting his decision.

The image of a grilled fish floated through Cliff's head and he couldn't help but drool a little at the thought. He nodded in response. At least his physical actions couldn't sabotage him like his words could.
He watched her carefully, examining the plate of cookies as she set it down, obviously meant for his taking. For a moment he just stared at them. Then, like a child who wasn't sure if they would be reprimanded for an action, he slowly reached out his hand and took one of the cookies. Bringing it to his lips, he took a bite from it, trying not to appear as hungry as he truly was. The taste was so good, however, that a gentle expression washed over his face and he downed the rest of the treat in a single bite.
Licking his lips he looked to her again and then back at the floor. "Um...tea...if you have it...pl-please." Cliff wasn't a fan of caffeine, he liked to wake up and sleep naturally, and that stuff only seemed to mess up his cycle. Tea, however, sounded fantastic on such a chilly night.
"I'm...Cliff..." he started, hoping to finish by asking her name. The words, it seemed, got caught in his throat and left the sentence hanging.

Cliff was taken aback by her response. He hadn't anticipated that reaction, and certainly hadn't meant to offend her. Though he was confused by her actions, he was still amused by them. He had to hide his laughter yet again, so as not to make matters worse. After all, he wasn't laughing at her. Not really.
The man took two solid strides towards her, being much faster simply by being sober. He threw an arm around her waist, tossing one of her arms over his shoulder. "I...didn't mean to offend you..." he said quietly, turning his face away to hide his embarrassment. "I was...go-going to offer you some help..."
He began to help her walk towards the shore, this being a task in itself since he felt how unsteady she really was. Walking slowly, so as not to trip her up, he added, "Unless...you've changed your mind...?"

Luminosity || Cliff and Claire
Claire had just gone down to the quaint little town of Forget-Me-Not, where she had a small rented farm near Jill’s, and was holding a handful of fireworks in her hands. The Cassey Brothers really out did themselves this time, and they trusted her with a little sample of their firework sparks. Claire laughed under her breath. Me? With fireworks? That sounds like the best idea yet.
Being the daredevil that she was, she took a few matches and one set of fireworks to Mother’s Hill, ready to experiment with these samples. The sunset had glazed the sky with a range of lavenders and scarlets several minutes before, leaving the black skies with lone remaining tints of color. This was a perfect time to light the wick.
As the fireworks lit up into the sky, she stepped back only to crash into another person and collapse back onto their chest, laughing and coughing at the smoke that puffed into her face just as the rockets lit up.
Turning to the person, Claire smiled with the lights of the fireworks still reflecting off her eyes.
"So…? Did you enjoy the show?"
Cliff had been given some time off from helping Ann and her father at the ranch in Mineral Town. It was almost as if they could tell he was growing restless from being in one place for too long. Years of traveling without a home would do that to any person. Though he had made it clear he'd return in a few days, Cliff couldn't help but feel selfish about leaving at all. It wasn't everyday he was needed by someone, and he didn't want to give those people any reason to worry.
His travels had led him to a very small rural town just over the mountains. It wasn't exactly the easier place to reach, but Cliff had looked over a map before he left and, realizing there was a town so close to the one he was currently residing in, decided to give it a look. It was better than wandering the wilderness for a few days, at least.
The sky had already start to darken by the time he arrived in the town. Wondering if he should find a place to camp or maybe something eat, Cliff's eyes surveyed the tiny town carefully in thought. Around that time, a spark flew up into the night sky and any thought that the man had was quickly extinguished.
His fatigue from traveling forgotten, Cliff ran quickly up the steep incline to where he had seen one of the lights erupt from. It was beautiful; the colors sparking vibrantly against the dark blue sky. The man could feel his soul jump with delight, and he remembered again why he was lucky to be alive. This was what traveling was all about. Completely engaged with the lights in the sky, he did not notice someone standing at the peak until she had backed into him.
He caught himself, almost falling backwards in alarm, and finally glanced away from what was above him to focus on what was in front in him. A girl turned to face him and he could still see those captivating colors reverberate in her eyes when she looked at him. Suddenly realizing he was staring at her, Cliff's entire face turned bright red and he froze in place. He had been so hypnotized by the fireworks that he had no idea there had been another person there the whole time. Had she seen him? He wanted to roll back down the hill in embarrassment and pretend it had never happened.
Instead, he answered he question with, "Y-Yes...It was..." But before he could complete the thought, he finally noticed her face. From the looks of it, she had been the one setting off the fireworks and some of the dust was covering her face. He pointed to her face and added, "Um...you ha-have a little...dirt..." If he wasn't so embarrassed, he might have even smiled.

Cliff wasn't sure what to do. He wasn't used to such kindness and he certainly wasn't used to receiving it from the opposite sex. His eyes examined the floor thoroughly as she spoke. He was determined to stare at the floor for as long as it took for his mind to make sense of the situation.
When Ann's name was mentioned again, he perked his head up slightly and looked to Elli. What she had said made him happy, and without his knowledge, a warm and genuine smile stretched across his face. Someone was grateful to him? No one had ever said that to him before. It made him feel something he thought he'd lost a long time ago...hope.
Oblivious to what was going on around him, his mind finally realized he was still standing in a room. With a girl. Who was speaking to him. Suddenly, he realized how rude he must have appeared, not knowing just how long he had been locked in thought. His cheeks tinted and he looked back to the floor. "Oh um...I...It doesn't ma-matter..." he said, realizing turning her down again would probably only make him seem more rude, and that wasn't what he wanted.
Gradually, he made it to the display case and raised his eyes to look at what it contained. His eyes drifted over to her once again and he said, "I'm not pi-picky. And...th-thank you."

Cliff had to stifle a laugh at the face she was making, since he was certain she wasn't aware of it herself. But at her comment his cheeks flushed slightly. He hadn't meant for it to come off as creepy, but he also wasn't very good at socializing...obviously. That and...well he wasn't sure how to respond to being called 'cute.' He just tried very hard to shrink himself into his shoulders.
"N-No, you didn't offend...me..," he muttered. Then he let out a scoff and added sarcastically, "Really? I couldn't tell." Cliff was unaware he had said the second out loud, being accustomed to thinking out loud anyway. He let a moment slide by and then asked, "Can you...stand?"

Her warm greeting caused Cliff to flinch back to reality. He blinked a few times, taking in her question. "Y-Yes...I...help Ann..," he mumbled. Hoping to run into me? He wondered just how many people Ann had told about him. It didn't matter either way, he supposed, but it was something he wasn't accustomed to; People wanting to meet him and what not. He was just about to wonder why everyone in Mineral Town was so kind when he listened again to what she was saying.
He brought his hands up to wave off the request, flattered but embarrassed. "Ma...make me something? Oh n-no I...you don't...why would you...?" And there went any hope of forming a logical sentence. Taking a breath, placing his arms back by his sides and composing his thoughts, Cliff added very softly, "You don't need to do that for me." His eyes moved to the floor.

It was getting late in the day, Cliff noticed as he bent to the ground and picked one last mushroom from the ground. He was used to scavenging, and knew how much to take to keep the environment safe. It was always good to keep some type of food on hand, just in case, though he wasn't the best at following his own rule.
On his way back towards Mineral Town, Cliff noticed something strange; A flower, poking it's way out of the ground. It was the middle of winter, so the poor thing stood out like a sore thumb among the grayed scenery. Deciding it looked pathetic enough, Cliff took pulled the little red flower out of the ground and placed it in a satchel he had borrowed from Ann. Maybe he would try keeping it alive until Spring.
Traveling through town, Cliff got lost once again. His stomach growled, and he thought briefly about snacking on the mushrooms he had spent the day gathering. That thought disappeared, however, as an aroma suddenly filled his nose. He wasn't even sure what it was, but it smelled sweet and, well, it smelled like food. Cliff really wasn't worried about anything other than that, so he took hold of the bakery door and swung it open.
Wandering inside had set off a little bell overhead, but Cliff was much too busy gawking at the little store to notice. His eyes surveyed the room, taking note of certain things around him. Overall, it was much too cute for him, and he felt strangely out of place. His stomach grumbled again, and that complaint was immediately forgotten. Well, everything was really, once he saw that the person standing behind the counter was, of course, a girl. He froze in place and stared at her. "S-Sorry, I...uh..," was all he could manage.
Bakery's Welcome | @ Cliff
The work day was drawing to a close. Elli was sweeping the bakery’s floor from all the crumbs from happy customers. After the store closed she’d be sweeping the kitchen next. Perhaps she’d enjoy a pastry for all her hard work. Maybe some tea to go with it.
While wiping down the counters and display case, Elli remembered that she’ll have to bake something for church tomorrow. She pondered what would be best. Maybe a coffee cake? It had been a while since she brought one of those. Maybe a pie? But which kind?
She was so consumed in her own thoughts that the door chime surprised her. Jumping a little, Elli turned to see who entered the bakery.
