the best piece of advice i can give to any new mountain goats fan is that sometimes john will just get you. sometimes you will hear a lyric and the only appropriate response will be "come on now john. don't do that to me." and then you'll need a couple minutes to sit and think about it. this is a normal reaction and we all go through it many times i promise

Recently crossed over a threshold I refer to as the John Darnielle Event Horizon, where it鈥檚 like. Objectively there are a lot of mountain goats tracks that would be just totally forgettable to me if I heard them in a vacuum. But once you鈥檝e been exposed to enough of the big ticket tracks you hit a point where, okay, now you鈥檙e basically ready to listen to this guy half-sing any set of words in any particular order and see how things shake out

hey. if you're a live tapes enjoyer, do yourself a favor and go listen to the 03-01-2024 Grace Cathedral solo show tape. i listen to a lot of live tapes and this has hands down the most breathtakingly gorgeous acoustics I've ever heard. the way the church echoes is absolutely ethereal and the performance is haunting and beautiful. this tape is one for the books, for sure.
