Fashion: It Is for Everyone Who Wants It
Hello everyone! My name is Chyenne Bliss and I am a sophomore studying Advertising at the University of Florida. The theme of this blog will be how to use inspiration from the runway to experiment with different trends while maintaining practical wear for a college student.
My goal for this blog is to help those who love fashion and want to be a part of it. Everyone should be able to participate even if they don’t live in a fashion capital. It is much easier to wear exaggerated trends in New York rather than Florida, but it doesn’t mean those who adore fashion can’t try them out.
I also want to provide ideas for men to wear these trends too! While most clothing designers are men, the turnover time for trends and the introduction of new styles is more significant for women’s fashion. Therefore, there will be ideas for both women and men to wear the same trends in their own ways.
Aside from straight forward fashion posts, I will also include guides on how to shop, ways to feel confident, etc. Fashion has so many aspects to it and I want to explore those in a way that makes it more accessible and less stressful.
Since each person has their own personal style, my fashion styling posts won’t be an exhaustive list of ideas. Feel free to take inspiration, but also put your own twist on them. That’s what it’s all about!
Nothing in fashion is new, it’s just translated in a unique way to showcase what’s happening in the world. We don’t need fashion: no one needs 14 pairs of jeans or 67 pairs of shoes. But fashion isn’t about the need, it’s about creating a story. It is about showing who you are on the inside and reflecting it on the outside. Let me help you create your story and share it with your world.

Tone It Down
Pastels for spring? This is nothing new or surprising and I am sure you already have at least one item in your wardrobe that fits this trend. The new translations of this trend however are something to be celebrated!
Designers are using pastels in monochromatic outfits (each piece in the outfit is the same color) and pairing different pastels with each other. A few designers to put these into full effect for Spring 2018 were Roberto Cavalli, Max Mara, and Provenza.
“ I live for that trend! I think wearing all pastels or mixing colors is cute and if I was ballsy enough I would wear it around campus,” University of Florida student Hannah Bruns said.

For my ladies, to ring in the Spring season try pairing a lavender coat with a lavender top like in the photo. To dip your toes into the monochromatic sand, go for a nude/tan version of this outfit.

Guys can totally rock this as well without being too feminine (if that is the goal). Above is the perfect example of this trend: pair powder blue dress pants with a matching suit jacket, or for a muted look, try a bisque color!

Another rendition of this trend is to pair different pastels together! A fool proof way to do this is to find a piece like this bomber jacket that is color blocked using pastels.

If the previous options are too much for your style, this type of item above is perfect for you! You could even thrift a white shirt and make this yourself if your on a budget (which all of us college students are).

You Do You Boo

Even if we don’t feel like it, we need to work to be at the confidence level of Beyonce in this picture. We may not wake up feeling like queens or kings, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t.
There is no shame in feeling out of place or weird when experimenting with clothes. Getting dressed is so personal and when I’m not confident I just want to go home and hide… just kidding (kinda). Here are some tricks to try when trends seem weird and too “out there”.
“I think for the most part anyone and everyone is accepted on campus. Sometimes people are way out there but it’s more like, I wish I could wear that kind of thing. I stay pretty confident in my dress because it’s me! I love it,” Florida State University student Lindsey Humphries said.
1. Start small- Try to add a trend with an accessory like a headband or a belt to see if you even like it. It would be a waste to invest in a high-end piece and to hate it.
2. Do not walk with your head down- If you’re checking Instagram and looking down at the phone, you do you. If you are looking down at your feet to avoid eye contact or to employ, “if I don’t see them, they can’t see me,” that isn’t how it works sweetie. Condition yourself to look confident and eventually it will come through.
3. Make sure you can function comfortably- There is nothing worse than needing to adjust your clothes constantly! Not to mention, it is very noticeable to everyone around you. Make sure that the piece doesn’t restrict your normal movement, this will ensure that you are more comfortable mentally with what you’re wearing.
4. Have a good attitude- Fake it till you make it. You can pull-off anything if you have the right attitude. Stay true to who you are, but have fun with it and try new things. Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone is important for the sake of creativity and personal growth.
I hope this advice is helpful in some way! I know there are days when no matter what I put on, I feel like crap because I’m just not feeling confident. It may seem ridiculous, but if I look my best I feel good and I perform my jobs even better.

Rock, Paper... Plastic?
The vinyl or plastic trend that became popular in the 1960s, has returned in a huge way! Historically used in raincoats and boots, vinyl has been seen on the runway as jackets, dresses, purses and event pants.
Some major designers who incorporated vinyl/plastic into their Spring 2018 collections were Balmain, Chanel, Celine, and Marc Jacobs. Here are a couple ways for men and women to use this trend!
“I think at most you could get students to wear it in their shoes for going out or maybe in some type of rainwear, otherwise I think it doesn’t fit the average college students outfit choice,” University of Florida student Hannah Medina said.

Okay, so this trend is more appropriate to wear for a night out on the town, but that doesn’t mean you can’t pull it off! Ladies, rock some vinyl pants like these for a sleek, eye-catching look.

A great day option is to use a little handbag with vinyl parts added to it like the one above. This is a good way to stay within your style, but also sneak in a little edge.

Guys, on a rainy day you could easily pair a raincoat like the one pictured with light wash denim. It is simple and a “barely there,” way to use this fabric.

If guys want to commit to wearing more plastic, there are vinyl coated dress shoes that would be the perfect match for any suit and tie. There are plenty of versions of these shoes that are made in appropriate colors for use in the workspace too. Although these oil-slick, vinyl coated dress shoes above are a work of art, they may be better suited for a party scene.
Here is a fun video on more ways to style vinyl. Both women and men can take inspiration from this gun video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iivoeRh0g-o

Thrift Shop... Not the Macklemore Song
Tumblr media

I want to walk out of the thrift store looking like this every time I go! One man’s trash may truly be another one’s treasure (thank you Macklemore), but the trip to find that treasure is not easy.
Let’s be real, walking into a thrift shop can be like trying to find your friend at a concert without a cellphone. Everywhere you turn there are new distractions and you end up lost- or maybe that’s just me. While the variety of items is plentiful, it can be overwhelming and stressful. Here are some tips I stick to when seeking trends while thrifting.
“I try to look for colors and fabrics that resonate with me! I love thrifting because it's a fun hobby and a great opportunity to revamp your wardrobe with pieces that aren't directly circling in the trends,” Florida State University student JJ Jerez said.
-Go in with a concept/inspiration
I find that when I go shopping without an idea of what I want, I tend to get anxious and distracted. To prevent that, if I am in the mood to try out a new color palette or pattern, I will scan each section for things that have those specific qualities I am looking for.
-Do it yourself
Do not restrict yourself. A piece can always be altered to make it fit your personal style. I go to both women’s and men’s sections because I know there are great pieces regardless of who it was meant for. Also, if a piece is too big for me I will take scissors and “chop and crop it”. Let creativity take over and become your own designer!
-T-Shirts
When in doubt, use t-shirts to test out trends because some trends are too much for some people’s taste. If a designer showcases a line with neon colored fabrics, I will adjust this trend to my style. Find a neon shirt and offset it by pairing it with black denim jeans and a denim jacket. T-shirts are such an easy way to try a trend in a way that isn’t excessive. Find a shirt made with a silky fabric, a crazy pattern or a color you wouldn’t normally gravitate towards.
-Accessories
Similar to t-shirts, accessories can be a practical way to pick up on trends. Unlike t-shirts, accessories have the potential to make or break an outfit. They can change the entire vibe of an outfit. For instance, pairing jeans and a white t-shirt with ballet flats and a beret, will feel very chic and girly. But if the same basic outfit is paired with cowboy boots and a denim jacket, it will give off western, americana vibes.
Although this is not a complete list of every trick to thrifting, I hope these tips are helpful! This video has many more hacks for thrifting if you want to check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtKuBIO-uhw Remember to stay openminded and experiment because you never know what could come out of it.

This is a long range picture of the entrance to the ESPN Wide World of Sports, located at 700 South Victory Way, Orlando, FL. The entire complex has approximately 220 acres solely dedicated to athletic events such as, baseball, tennis, volleyball, cheer, dance, gymnastics, track and field, softball and more.  As the sun is rising, people are gathering to support their friends or family that are competing.

This is a closer, midrange perspective of the entrance to the ESPN Wide World of Sports, just before sunrise.  The white complex on the left-hand side is large and holds thousands of spectators. The red Wide World of Sports globe is a prime spot for visitors to take pictures and is an easy landmark for teams and guests to use as a meeting spot.  Every year during the second weekend of March, ESPN Wide World of Sports hosts the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) International All-Star Championship (IASC). Teams from around the world come to perform and compete against each other to bring home winning titles.

The blue mat pictured above, is located in the HP Field House of the ESPN Wide World of Sports center, one of the main performance areas. This specific spring mat is what Level Five All-Star cheerleading teams compete on for their competitions throughout the year. It has springs and extra padding, underneath the blue top, to prevent injuries and reduce wear and tear on athlete’s bodies. High school and college teams typically perform only on the blue top mat. For this competition, UCA staffers and ESPN workers added the padding and springs the night before this event.

This is the Wedel Satellites Cheerleading team, which traveled from Germany to compete in the UCA IASC. In the International Open Small Coed division, the Satellites took home ninth place on their second day of competition. Teams are separated into different sections or “divisions” because there are hundreds of teams to score and keep organized. In the above picture, the Satellites are from Germany and they were placed in the “International” division. This team is comprised of less than twenty-four males and females, putting them in the “Small Coed,” division. In order for a team to be considered “Large”, they must have twenty-six or more team members. The term “Open”, refers to a team that is allowed to perform a more difficult set of skills than a “Restricted,” team.

These LED neon lights are located at most food stations inside the arenas. Aside from the food trucks outside the Marathon Sports Field, this sporting event does not sell many nutritious options. This Marathon food truck sold tacos, salads, pizza and smoothies.  However, the selection inside the HP Field House included cinnamon pretzels, nachos, fries, hotdogs, and slushies.

Alexis Marquith (right) and I (left) met up after her team performed and we took this close-up shot. She is a Senior, Level Three cheerleader and performed in the Visa Athletic Center arena. She is a member of the Brandon All-stars in Brandon, Florida, where I cheered competitively for four years. Throughout Alexis’ cheer career, she has earned grand champion and national titles at UCA, NCA and Summit competitions.
