Just wanted to agree with you re: the ghoul being an self preservation act, maybe even subconsciously. My brain can't quite make the jump from his one extreme to the other (his accent, his mannerisms, how he holds himself), and I hope they explore that transition in s2.

Same! I think they purposefully made a lot of that vague so it could be explored better once he starts to drop the bad guy act a little. I think they might use Lucy as a bit of a catalyst into getting him to open up more about his past and his transition from who he was then to who he is now, sort of like how they used her to introduce new fans to this world via her being new to the world of the wasteland as well. I'm very invested however it plays out regardless though.
