Love the fact that we all collectively seem to have agreed that modern Mu Qing would still have waist length hair. Any of the other mxtx characters drawn in modern au’s seem to have a 50/50 chance of short or long hair, and depend on the artist’s preference. But I have yet to see Mu Qing depicted as anything less than a runway model.

a guide to writing ballet (pt 1)
(from a ballet dancer!!)
The first and most important thing: Pointe shoes are pointe shoes. They are not ‘slippers’ (that’s a different thing entirely), and they are certainly not toe shoes. With that, let’s begin!
Ballet Class
A ballet class can be anywhere from 1-2.5 hours, depending on age, skill level, and teacher.
Beginner classes are usually 1 hour, if your character is just starting or if they’re a child under 10. Pre-professional students usually have 1.5-2 hour ballet classes, and professional classes are about the same length.
Think about this when planning out a ballet scene! How old are your characters? How long have they been dancing?
A ballet class is divided into two parts: Barre and center.
Barre is usually 45 mins-1 hour.
Center takes up the rest of class, and is usually 30 mins-1 hour, depending on the teacher’s time management skills.
A teacher may give corrections at any time. Some typical ones are “Turn out”, “don’t sickle your feet/point your feet”. Some teachers get pretty creative with metaphors. I used to have a teacher who would compare our kneecaps to umbrellas.
Corrections can be tough, but they usually aren’t intended to be negative. Getting corrections and working harder is the only way to grow as a dancer!
Attire:
For students, there is usually a dress code. For girls there will be a company/level leotard, usually a plain solid color, and the color can depend on the level. Warm-ups (other clothes) are usually not permitted past pliés unless the teacher is really chill.
For professional dancers, the dress code is much more lenient. Usually, we will wear the most random outfits. However, eras the word ‘balletcore’ from your mind and instead picture someone’s evil little brother who steals clothes from the Goodwill trash can. That’s what we wear.
Rehearsal
Dancers have rehearsal when preparing for a show, and this happens at all age and skill levels.
How a dance gets ready for stage:
Learning the choreography. (This one is pretty self-explanatory)
‘Running’ the choreography. Performing it repeatedly in the studio, then getting corrections after each run.
Corrections/notes: a list of things to work on for the run. These can relate to cleanliness of the steps, spacing/blocking, acting/facial expressions, and more.
Then you run it again. And again.
Rehearsals are long. 3-7 hours, depending on what is being rehearsed. But there’s a lot of downtime, so that’s a good time to introduce some drama for your characters! Or maybe they’re just going to make out in the costume room. Each to their own.
Shoes
Because these guys need their own section. You can google any of these to see what they look like
The main event: flat shoes. Also know as ballet slippers, they’re made of canvas or leather, and are worn for most classes, unless it’s specifically a pointe class or the teacher wants the class en pointe.
Pointe shoes. Not toe shoes. Dancers usually start pointe around 11 years old. They’re the shoes where you’re on your toes. They hurt like a bitch when you start out, but you get used to them (kinda). Maybe. My teacher always says, “nothing ever gets easier, you just get better.”
Jazz shoes are leather shoes with a slight heel. Usually black and sometimes skin tone. Worn for jazz and musical theater.
For modern and contemporary classes, dancers are usually barefoot, but can sometimes get away with socks, depending on the technique and teacher.
Types of Performances
Story ballets: the classics. The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Don Q, etc. Usually 1-2 hours. Comprised of corps dances (think Waltz of the Flowers) and soloist roles (Sugar Plum)
Variation: a short classical ballet solo that’s already been choreographed. For example, the choreography for the soloist fairies in Sleeping Beauty stays the same no matter which company is performing it, because those are classic variations!
Pieces: usually newer works, anywhere from 5-20 minutes. If your characters do more contemporary dance, they’ll be in pieces, rather than full ballets
Insider Dancer Info
These things will make you look like you know what you’re doing!
Informal classifications of dancers:
turner: a dancer who is good at turns. This means they are very good with rhythm and precision, and can do a lot of pirouettes.
jumper: a dancer who is good a jumps. They are very strong, and have enough power to jump really high.
Adagio vs. Grand Allegro: the eternal debate, actually. Flexible and strong dancers prefer adagio, while energetic and musical dancers prefer grand allegro. Most people hate adagio. As an adagio girlie, I can’t let this slide.
Terms
junk: warm-up clothing worn over a leotard and tights. This can be anything from a wrap sweater and leg warmers to a trash bag. It depends on the dancer! Think about how your character might dress! Explore social media, look for ballet grwm videos from actual dancers to get a sense of what they’d be wearing!
turns: pirouettes, fouettés, etc. Any turning movement. Just please don’t call them spins. You’ll make me die inside.
steps: we usually don’t refer to individual movements as ‘moves’. Especially in ballet. We’re very classy here!
Anyway. I’m very tired of seeing weird vocabulary used in ballet AUs, especially because they’re so fun to read! The most important things are a) have fun writing! and b) go down that research rabbit hole if you have to. Your dancer readers will thank you.
This is a part one because I’ve got so much more to say. Feel free to ask for clarification!

The video vs. the comments: Part One
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An American Jew posts about a family outing with her husband and child. You comment about her being a genocidal maniac.
Truly showing how there is a separation between Jews and the state of Israel. I totally believe you when you say your problem is with Zionists and not Jews. 🙄

Oh wow the antisemites insisting theyre "just anti(((zionist))), not antisemitic!" reached peak levels of antisemitism?? shocker, outrageous! This pic in particular is beyond disgusting:
Tumblr media
can you IMAGINE coming to AUCHWITZ of all places wearing mock yellow stars and doing this shit, while simultaneously claiming "its not about Jews sweaty, its about (((Israel))) :^)))))"??? I can only guess these girls are Polish which unfortunately means the apple didnt fall very far from the pogrom tree on which their grandparents hung their Jewish neighbors after the end of WW2

hc that xie lian was a nice kid but he never really understood how basic things worked because he never had to do them. so sometimes he would request mu qing to do something absurd like wash and get his clothes ready IN AN HOUR because he has to leave for his parents soon or make him a dish there would take days to prepare for a lunch and mu qing would stare at him thinking if xie lian would ever survive living on his own.
