Measuring the Moments

I heard someone say once that you shouldn’t think of the time you have left with people in years or months, but in moments. If you go to visit your parents every other year and you think they have 10 years left, that’s 5 more times you’ll see your parents.

My parents are in their early 60s. My natural grandparents all died before age 75, and neither of my parents is particularly healthy. I have never expected either of them to see 70 years old.

I haven’t been particularly close to my parents in a while (maybe never with my dad), and the pandemic certainly didn’t help. At the end of 2022, I saw my mom for the first time in years. While I knew her health wasn’t great, it was a wake-up call to see her in person. It made me realize how little time we truly have left. I saw her twice last year, and I try to call her at least once a week now. If I can’t have more years, I’m at least going to squeeze as many moments as I can out of the years we do have.

My dad started radiation and chemo recently. The prognosis is good, but it’s an aggressive cancer, so they are taking it seriously. The kid and I flew to see him the weekend before he started. He was in decently good spirits. Still strong and vibrant. He insisted on taking us out for a ride in his new hot rod. (The kid said, “Uhhh Mom, it doesn’t have a shoulder strap on the seat belt?” Yeah, I know, kid. This is how they made them in the 70’s.) My daughter was very not into it—too loud, too fast. But I grew up this way. Cars and racing are my dad’s greatest joys. In a few months, my dad will be weak and thin and fragile. But for now, he is still himself. He still gets that mischievous glimmer in his eye before he slams on the gas and starts shifting gears. He still giggles at his granddaughter’s wide eyes. He still swears that was the last time, then looks over and winks at me because we both know it’s not.

These are the moments we carry with us long after the people we shared them with are gone. I’m grateful for the opportunity to share a few more. Who knows how many more we have left.
