Gần hai thập kỷ từ sau khi Carl Benz chế tạo chiếc xe chạy bằng động cơ xăng đầu tiên, các chuyên gia kỹ thuật mới nhận ra rằng hiện tượng kích nổ không cho phép họ tuỳ ý tăng sức mạnh của động cơ đốt trong. Những năm cuối thế kỷ 19 đầu thế kỷ 20, lịch sử của động cơ đốt trong bước sang một trang mới. Người khởi xướng cho cuộc cách mạng công nghệ ôtô - xe máy thời kỳ đó là Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler, nhà thiết kế động cơ người Đức, khi vào năm 1885, ông thử nghiệm thành công loại xe hai bánh chạy bằng động cơ đốt trong một xi-lanh. Song song và độc lập với Wilhelm Daimler, năm 1886, Carl Freidrich Benz nhận được bằng sáng chế về phát minh “vận chuyển bằng động cơ dùng xăng” với chiếc xe 4 bánh, động cơ làm lạnh trong một xi-lanh. Và ở bên kia bờ Đại Tây Dương, năm 1903, đánh dấu sự ra đời của một trong những hãng xe nổi tiếng nhất hiện nay, Ford Motor Company do Henry Ford thành lập. Lợi nhuận kếch xù thu được từ việc sản xuất xe hơi cộng với sự xuất hiện của hàng loạt các phát minh sáng chế đã kéo tất cả các hãng xe và các nhà phát triển động cơ vào cuộc cạnh tranh gay gắt về công nghệ. Các hãng xe thường xuyên nâng cấp cấu tạo của động cơ bằng cách tích hợp thêm nhiều tính năng mới như hệ thống làm lạnh trong, hệ thống đánh lửa tự động, và điều quan trọng hơn, luôn tin tưởng rằng sức mạnh của động cơ đốt trong có thể tăng lên một cách tuỳ ý, vì theo lý thuyết nhiệt động học, với tỷ số nén càng cao, hiệu suất nhiệt càng gần đến cực đại. Nhưng, vào năm 1912, họ đã phải khống chế tỷ số nén ở dưới một giá trị tới hạn cho phép. Nguyên nhân đưa ra quyết định đi ngược với xu thế phát triển đó là những tiếng nổ “lốc cốc” xuất hiện khi động cơ đang làm việc, nguy hiểm hơn, hiện tượng này còn phá hủy động cơ chỉ sau vài phút xuất hiện. Vào thời điểm đó, các kỹ sư cho rằng những tiếng “lốc cốc” có nguyên nhân từ hệ thống đánh điện được cung cấp cho các loại xe có chức năng “đề”, còn những nhà phát triển động cơ cho biết họ có thể nâng cao sức mạnh và hiệu suất của động cơ nếu hiện tượng đó được khắc phục. Đứng trước thách thức đó, Charles F. Kettering, trưởng phòng nghiên cứu của hãng General Motor đã giao cho người đồng nghiệp Thomas Midgley nhiệm vụ phải tìm ra một cách chính xác nguyên nhân của hiện tượng. Ban đầu, họ sử dụng máy ghi áp lực Dobbie-McInnes và đã chứng minh rằng những tiếng “lốc cốc” đó không xuất hiện do sự đánh lửa sớm của hệ thống điện, mà nó xuất hiện đúng thời điểm áp suất tăng một cách mãnh liệt sau khi bugi đánh lửa. Tuy nhiên, máy ghi áp lực không thích hợp cho các nghiên cứu sâu hơn, vì vậy Midgley và Bob đã dùng một camera tốc độ cao để quan sát chính xác những gì đang diễn ra khi động cơ làm việc, đồng thời, phát triển một máy hiển thị năng lượng cao để đo mức độ của tiếng nổ. Song song với những thử nghiệm của Thomas Midgley, Sir Harry Ricardo - chuyên gia động cơ của quân đội Hoàng gia Anh - đưa ra khái niệm lựa chọn tỷ số nén tối ưu cho các động cơ có tỷ số nén biến đổi. Tuy nhiên, tỷ số mà Ricardo đưa ra không phải là tuyệt đối vì còn rất nhiều các thông số khác như thời gian đánh lửa, tình trạng sạch sẽ, vị trí của chốt đánh lửa, nhiệt độ động cơ… Các hãng xe, những nhà nghiên cứu động cơ cuối cùng phải thừa nhận rằng, họ đã quên không nghiên cứu, không phát triển một thành phần quan trọng ảnh hưởng đến quá trình hoạt động của động cơ đốt trong: nhiên liệu. Nhiên liệu dùng cho động cơ đốt trong tồn tại một tính chất đặc biệt: nó sẽ tự cháy, tự kích nổ khi bị nén trong xi-lanh dưới áp suất cao, trước cả khi bugi đánh lửa. Từ kết quả của những nhà nghiên cứu đi trước, năm 1927, Graham Edgar, một nhân viên trẻ của hãng Ethyl Corporation tại Mỹ, đưa ra đề nghị sử dụng 2 hydrocacbon để đánh giá mức độ kích nổ cho nhiên liệu: n-heptan và 2,4,4-trimetylpentan, hay còn được gọi một cách không chính xác là iso-octan. Iso-octan có chỉ số chống kích nổ cao, còn n-heptan có khả năng chống kích nổ rất kém và Edgar đã đề nghị sử dụng tỷ số của hai chất này để đánh giá khả năng chống kích nổ của nhiên liệu sử dụng trong các động cơ đốt trong. Ông cũng đã chứng minh rằng, trị số chống kích nổ của tất cả các loại xăng thương mại ngày đó đều có thể quy về tỷ số thể tích n-heptan: octan nằm trong khoảng 60:40 đến 40:60. Như vậy, nếu chúng ta ra quầy xăng vào những năm 30 của thế kỷ trước, chúng ta chỉ có thể mua được các loại xăng từ A40 đến A60 mà thôi. Lý do mang tính kỹ thuật mà Edgar đưa ra khi dùng hai chất này là chúng có những tính chất vật lý rất gần nhau như tính chất bay hơi và đặc biệt là nhiệt độ sôi, chính vì vậy, khi ta thay đổi tỷ số “heptan: iso-octan” từ 100:0 đến 0:100 thì hầu như các thông số trên thay đổi không đáng kể. Điều này rất quan trọng đối với quá trình thử nghiệm, vì khả năng bay hơi của nhiên liệu ảnh hưởng rất lớn đến hoạt động của động cơ. Edgar đã thu được rất nhiều thông số từ thử nghiệm này, tuy nhiên, hiện nay, phổ biến nhất vẫn là hai thông số RON (Research Octane Number-chỉ số octan nghiên cứu) và MON (Motor Octane Number-chỉ số octan động cơ).

    Main applications of ethanol are classified into 3 categories;

Fuel Use (Denatured alcohol) :

  The largest use of ethanol is as a motor fuel and fuel additive used to operate vehicle engines. The market for this sector has highest growth potential. Many countries have attempted to replace some of their gasoline consumption with ethanol by mixing certain percentage of ethanol into gasoline to achieve the resulting product called gasohol. The largest national fuel ethanol industries exist in Brazil. Ethanol for fuel use is further divided into hydrous and anhydrous alcohol, each contained different purity from distillation.

Industrial Use :

  For industrial use, ethanol is mostly used as chemical in industrial processes. Other uses of ethanol are perfumes, paint, cosmetics and medicine such as tinctures. Ethanol is also used in medical wipes and in most common antibacterial hand sanitizer gels at a concentration of about 62% as an antiseptic. Ethanol proves to be effective against most bacteria and fungi, and many viruses, but is ineffective against bacterial spores.

Beverages (Portable alcohol) :

  The market of ethanol for beverage is the smallest and has the lowest growth among the three because alcohol beverages can be produced from fruits such as grapes and malt as well as from ethanol. The ethanol content of a beverage is usually measured in terms of the volume fraction of ethanol in the beverage, expressed either as a percentage or in alcoholic proof units. China is the main market for ethanol beverages followed by Russia, USA, Brazil and Japan*.
