Investigating the theme of light and dark through primary source photographs I took in moody lighting, in order to to see the affect it has in communicating the emotion and/or message of the subject. Then investigating which media would help enhance and suggest the light and the dark.

Using the photos as reference, I created observational drawings using technique of contour lines to show light and dark, in the way Henry Moore did. I used a range of media including ones that Moore uses, to see which best displays the contour lines. This allow me to become more comfortable with the technique before creating a larger piece in more depth.

Photoshop Primary sourced photos
Inspired by the work of Henry Moore, I took photo’s in dimly lit rooms to create a rainy day/winter evening style lighting. To enhance the light and dark even more I took the photos into photoshop and enhanced the exposure, highlights, shadows and contrast to create a dramatic affect.

Experiments (textures and placement)
Oils on paper

In this project I decided to explored “How light and dark can affect the overall mood of the piece of art”. Two techniques I was inspired by during my researching was chiaroscuro and tenebrism.
Decided to created my own piece of art using both technique. I wanted to create a piece of art that has an intimate atmosphere between the viewer and the subject. I used expressive brush strokes, used by chiaroscuro artist Henrik Uldalen. The brush strokes where of the same colour of the skin. And I used a dark background to enhance the contact between the foreground and background. And thereby expressing emotions of the subject.

Combining the technique of contour lines to show light and dark, with my own smooth style to show light and dark. The background should frame the subject whilst showing light and dark, enhancing the dramatic mood of the subject.
