Quodo in Every Episode - weeks 1-6
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I... probably should be a bit more regular in crossposting these Quodo in Every Episode discussions... (But the screencaps I'm using are too small to work nicely on Tumblr if I only put one in a post!)
Anyway, if anyone is curious, we've discussed these episodes so far:
2x11 "Rivals"
4x01/4x02 "Way of the Warrior"
1x17 "The Forsaken"
7x17 "Penumbra"
5x14 "In Purgatory's Shadow"
3x05 "Second Skin"
For each episode, I'm choosing a screencap featuring Odo and/or Quark, which has been pretty fun. (More information about this challenge over here.)

14 for the Soulcalibur ask?
14. What is your favorite stage?
It's hard to pick just one, so I'll do a small selection. I think what tends to factor into my favorite stages is, like, general atmosphere, nice lighting, good background music track, and an enclosed space/sense of scale -- feeling like you're high up is a bonus, and I tend to hate infinite scroll stages (they always feel kind of generic and boring to me). I also think I'm a bit biased toward SCII and SCIII stages because of the sheer amount of time I spent playing those games (their 1-player modes are quite extensive!).
Kaminoi Castle - Sakura-Dai Gate from Soulcalibur II:
youtube
I really like this stage. One of my favorite tracks from this game and I like the stone walls (that you can bounce off of). I like how open and high up this stage is and how you can fall off the edge. Also, the way this stage captures the lighting and colors of twilight. I think why I tend to not like or remember later SC games' stages as much is that the stages are more dynamic and so the lighting changes over the course of the battle, and there isn't just One Beautiful Color Palette you associate with each stage. But the lighting on this stage is optimized to capture perfect sunset vibes with the white walls of the castle tinged a pale purple, and that makes it very memorable for me.
South France Mansion - Library from Soulcalibur II:
youtube
This one is admittedly a bit of a weird stage because like... what's up with that open ledge on one side that you can just fall down from? Why would you design a library this way...? It's very odd. But it's a very memorable stage -- fighting in a mansion library is really cool! And I like how enclosed this stage is, with bookshelves as walls. (I apparently like walls that really feel like part of the stage!) And once again, the golden light filtering in through windows does really make this stage feel like an indoor library in the late afternoon. I really like it!
Eurydice Shrine - Gate of the Gods from Soulcalibur III:
youtube
I love how high up in the mountains this stage looks -- the vistas, the snow gently falling, the strong wind in the stage. It also gives a nice sense of open space, and the flowing water in the background gives this stage a meditative vibe. The music is pretty epic too. Top tier stage.
Thanks for the ask! Ask me Soulcalibur questions.

6 and 19 for the Soulcalibur Ask List
6. Who is your favorite character design?
Ooh this is hard! If we're talking which character is my favorite overall across all of their designs, I would probably say Setsuka. Why Setsuka? Her costumes from the start have always been very detailed and elaborate (I guess she benefits from being introduced relatively late in the series, when SC could go all out on the graphics!). The "East meets West" idea behind her design is such a fascinating concept, which is explored in so many different ways in her designs. And she gets such interesting color palettes, whether it's the pink and red of her "Queen of Hearts" SCIII design, the purple and pink of her "Cho-han Dealer" SCIV design, or the black and gold of her "Cool Delinquent Coat Cape" SCVI design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If we're talking about single favorite design across all games, it's Seong Mi-na's SCIII 2P costume for me. This look is unparalleled IMO. Her hairstyle is so cute. The asymmetric strap and sheer material of her top! The side-slit pants! The green and blue color scheme, which is so different from what she normally wears, but which suits her 100%. *_*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
19. Which game do you think has the best opening?
I struggled more than I expected with this question. My first thought was "SCIII!" then I thought "Wait, what about Soul Edge?" and then I thought "Maybe SCII is my favorite???" But now I'm back to saying Soul Edge:
youtube
Selling points:
The "Edge of Soul" song is bomb.
...with visuals matched to the music.
Good intro to the full roster of characters -- with the exception of the villains (poor Voldo).
Dance break in the middle featuring ~The Ladies~
Despite the primitive graphics, this opening is action-packed and epic.
Thanks for the ask! 😊 Ask me Soulcalibur questions.

Truly the all time funniest writer thing is when you're doing edits and you think to yourself "omg I've got the PERFeCT sentence to add right here!" and then you stick it in all excited, only to find that literally three lines down you have virtually that exact same sentence in the draft already.

another amigurumi from last summer, a big (comparatively) moogle! i used bulky yarn for once. trying to get the head the shape took a while but i'm v happy with the result!
partial pattern (didn't keep track for wings/antenna, sorry) below the cut
head & body - note, as i said i had trouble getting the shape right so feel free to adjust it if it looks weird to you-- you might have to fudge the shape a bit with stuffing/tension. anyway! rounds 1-8: starting with 6 sc in a magic ring, increase evenly with 6 stitches each round until you have 48 stitches (rnd 8). rounds 9-15: 48 sc round 16: (3 sc, dec, 3 sc) x6 (42 stitches) round 17: 42 sc round 18: (5 sc, dec) x6 (36 stitches) round 19: 9 sc, (sc, inc) x3, 6 inc, (sc, inc) x3, 9 sc (48 stitches) round 20: 48 sc round 21: (sc, dec) x16 (32 stitches) round 22: 8 sc, 8 dec, 8 sc (24 stitches) round 23: (sc, dec, sc) x6 (18 stitches) round 24: 3 sc, 6 dec, 3 sc (12 stitches) stuff the head & embroider the face round 25: 12 inc (24 stitches) round 26: (3 sc, inc) x6 (30 stitches) round 27-28: 30 sc round 29: (2 sc, inc, 2 sc) x6 (36 stitches) round 30-34: 36 sc round 35: (7 sc, dec) x4 (32 stitches) round 36: (sc, dec, sc) x8 (24 stitches) round 37: (sc, dec) x8 (16 stitches) round 38: 8 dec stuff the body, cut yarn & sew shut arms (make 2) round 1: 6 sc in mr round 2: 6 inc (12 stitches) round 3: (3 sc, inc) x3 (15 stitches) round 4-5: 15 sc round 6: (3 sc, dec) x3 (12 stitches) round 7: 12 sc round 8: (sc, dec, sc) x3 (9 stitches) round 9: 9 sc stuff, cut yarn with long tail & sew shut. use tail to sew to body.
legs (make 2) rounds 1-6: same as arms round 7: (sc, dec) x4 (8 stitches) stuff, cut yarn with long tail & sew shut. use tail to sew to body.
ears (make 2) round 1: 6 sc in mr round 2: 6 inc (12 stitches) round 3: (sc, inc, sc) x4 (16 stitches) round 4: (3 sc, inc) x4 (20 stitches) cut yarn with long tail. flatten into a triangle & use tail to sew to head, curving the sides forward.
for the wings, i didn't write down what i did but there are probably various wing tutorials out there ;; for the antenna, i think i make a very tight tube? like maybe a magic ring with 4 sc, repeated until tall enough? & the pom pom is just a small sphere

One year of my Quark-x-Odo dA art group
It's been just over a year now since I created a fanart group on DeviantArt, so I wanted to give an update on how it's been going.
So one thing about trying to run an art group on dA is that, if you want to add other people's art to your galleries, you basically need to send a request for every piece of art every two weeks, because requests expire and become non-actionable after two weeks have passed... Not only that, but it seems like after some unknown longer amount of time, dA actually removes the expired request from an artist's notifications entirely, so a user may not even be aware that a group has asked in the past to add their art to its galleries. dA sends no email notifications for gallery add requests, so as you might expect, most people don't realize they have requests that need their attention and often have no ability to even follow up either. I'm... really not sure why dA makes you jump through so many hoops for what is essentially just free publicity/a fancy labeled hyperlink that doesn't actually affect the artist or original art in any way, but... well, that's just how dA is.
Anyway, so I've been resending these requests every two weeks, and sometimes people accept, occasionally someone rejects, most just don't respond either way. The result of this regular renewal of requests has been that gradually people add their art to our galleries. To give you an indication, this was our status after about 3 months of the group running:
Tumblr media
Right now, having run for a full year, those numbers are: Total works: 134. Total artists: 69 (nice). Total pieces requested to be added: 328 (note: these numbers don't include rejected pieces). Response rate: 41%. By folder: Quodo: 46%. Quark: 44%. Odo: 35%. Ensemble: 39%. Fiction: n/a. Miscellaneous: 0%.
As you can see, the longer I keep these requests active, the more likely it is the artist will eventually respond accepting the request.
However, without going into too many unimportant details, dA has recently updated their groups functionality so that it is no longer practical for me to tell when someone has rejected an add request. So rather than risk pestering artists who might have rejected add requests, I think the best thing to do here is for me to just stop doing this thing where I renew requests. It's been a year anyway -- it's a good timeframe to decide that if an artist hasn't responded by now, they're probably not going to show up. So from now on, I will only send out a request to add a piece of art once, and if it expires, it expires.
It is a shame, though, as it means that I have much less ability to showcase older art that still exists on dA, especially since dA also removed the ability to have group favorite galleries (which are ALSO basically just fancy labeled hyperlinks, just ones that DON'T require artist permission for groups to curate art in galleries -- what's the difference, you ask, and why wouldn't you just keep the favorites functionality over the gallery functionality then? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). But I guess this is fine -- the focus of this group will just have to pivot from trying to archive all the Quodo art that exists on dA to highlighting the art of artists who are at least somewhat active on the site. So far, I've been getting a decent amount of response to my requests to add newer art, so maybe in ten years' time, this group will actually function as an archive of older art! But for now, I will just focus on making it a place that encourages artists to make Quark/Odo art and provides them a place to showcase it.
On the plus side, the update to groups did make our front page snazzier and more customizable. Here's what our group page looks like now after I've fiddled with some of the options:
Tumblr media
It's not bad, and I'm able to highlight important information easier. Also, I can actually randomize which art appears on the main page, which is something that just wasn't possible before! (Because... dA has always been kind of broken...)
As you can tell, the main thing missing from the page is a cover/banner image at the top. I would like to use that space to highlight either some fanart or screencaps from the show. If anyone has art they would be fine with me using (preferably in a darker color palette to match the general dark mode of the page), I would love to use it!
Anyway, happy 1st birthday to this community! Even though I feel like not many people really appreciate using DeviantArt as a fanart platform, this group has kind of been my baby for the past year, and I've been enjoying maintaining the galleries and regularly updating the group despite dA's efforts to thwart me at every turn. It's been nice having a little space I can putter around in. This dA group almost feels like having a Neocities page(?) but with simpler functionality and easier to use.
(Sometimes maintaining a Tumblr blog feels a bit to me like a rat race, like I collect all these shinies and then they're gone and I never see or think about them again, and you go away from the site too long and you've missed so many shinies, and I don't know why I'm doing this. But this dA group has felt more like having a little virtual house that I gradually decorate and add more things to each time I visit to make it feel a bit more welcoming, which is very satisfying. And maintaining a Dreamwidth comm feels a bit like editing a wiki: fairly easy to do, SO much writing involved, results in an incredibly organized set of resources afterward.)

Wondering what boop count your 3 letter word corresponds to? I gotchu:
Using a python script I wrote, I booped myself 50,000 times, saving an image of my boop-o-meter every 500 boops. Before we get into the results, there are two important limitations to this study that I should mention:
Firstly, because I only recorded the boop-o-meter every 500 boops, if a message appeared for less than 500 boops it may not have been caught.
Secondly, every now and then my computer would lose a boop or two when a click wouldn't register. This is seen in the 500 and 1000 boop images below, which in reality read 498 and 994 respectively. Because of this, boop values are slightly lower than they appear.
With that out of the way, lets dig in.
0-999:
From boops 0-999, the boop-o-meter displays your boop count, and changes color as you boop
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Boop count: 0 Boop count: 500 Boop count: 1000
Boop fact: the colors do not change after 1000
LOL:
Between boops 1000 and 1500, the boop-o-meter changed to display 'LOL'. This likely took place at 1000 boops, but maybe it said 'MAX' or sumn for awhile at first? Idk this is already the misinformation website so not my problem.
Tumblr media
Boop count: 1500 (actually more like 1490 ish)
More results below the cut
OMG:
Between 1500 and 2000, the boop-o-meter changed to display 'OMG'. Again, this probably happened at 1500 but who knows. Maybe staff made it 1523 for the bit or something.
Tumblr media
Boop count: ~2000
WOW:
The boop-o-meter remained at omg until the 3500 boop readpoint, when it switched to 'WOW', meaning this transition happens somewhere between ~2980 and ~3480.
Tumblr media
Boop count: ~3500
Boop fact: 'WOW' is the second longest reigning message
*-*:
Between 5000 and 5500 the boop-o-meter switched to '*-*'. You get the idea at this point so I'll speed it up.
Tumblr media
Boop count: ~5500
WHY:
The boop-o-meter changed to 'WHY' between 6000 and 6500 boops. For science. That's why.
Tumblr media
Boop count: ~6500
PLZ:
Next was 'PLZ', switching between 7000 and 7500.
Tumblr media
Boop count: ~7500
AAA:
I'm not sure what bloody urine has to do with anything, but for some reason staff felt is was important to display, switching between 7500 and 8000.
Tumblr media
Boop count: ~8000
;_;:
Huh the colon makes that one look weird. 8000-8500.
Tumblr media
Boop count: ~8500
Boop fact: That fucking cat haunts me in my dreams
0_0:
I realized after I set my pyautogui script running that my computer wouldn't turn off its screen because of the clicking, so there was a strobing blue light in my room all night. This encapsulated my expression while trying to sleep (8500-9000).
Tumblr media
Boop count: ~9000
MAX:
After 9000 it displayed 'MAX'. This was cap. (9000-9500 switch).
Tumblr media
Boop count: OVER 9000 (9500)
<33:
I miss my wife. 9500-10,000.
Tumblr media
Boop count ~10,000
TUM BLR:
THE HOLY GRAIL. The boop-o-meter switched to displaying 'TUM BLR' between 10,000 and 10,500 boops. Because my actual boop count was slightly behind my theoretical, I'd guess that this change happened at 10,000 boops.
Tumblr media
Boop count: ~10,500 (likely switched at 10,000)
Summary:
When charted the boop curve looks as follows:
Tumblr media
Boop curve: 0 - 10,000 boops
My script continued to run until 53,000 boops, but no further changes were observed. Again, there were quite possibly more messages at lower boop values, but my ass is not checking. Maybe I should have scaled my sampling accordingly, but it is what it is. Thank you for joining me on this journey, and if you have any corrections or more information, please add it to this post.
Boop fact: Terfs DNI
