The café was nice enough, even if the light was a bit irritating to his eyes, though, given how many drinks had been pushed into his hands and how many drinking songs from planets he hadn’t even heard of since he was a boy he had sung the night before he supposed that a bit of sensitivity was worth the memories he had made. It was a bit hard to believe still, and he caught himself grinning like a fool (and on one occasion waking on air) whenever he caught a glimpse of the hued metal around his wrist glinting in the sunlight. Between his own elation and the annoying but ultimately endearing reaction of the boys he hadn’t really taken in the fact that his bubble of friends and family was rapidly expanding but, like most things Kara had brought to his life, he couldn’t help but think that this was a good thing. A great thing, even if getting an invitation to brunch from The Barry Allen was a bit overwhelming,  in all actuality.
The Legion had been founded to emulate the original justice league, after all. Every one of the founding members was a bit of a folk hero back in his own time even if little was remembered of who they were as individuals. Each of them had been turned more into an embodiment of heroics than anything else but even through the uncertainty he felt about who each of them would actually turn out to be as people he still wanted to make a good impression, if only to show them that even a millennium later there were still people upholding the values they sought out to protect.
He was also just a bit nervous about meeting Barry after all that Kara had said about him. He seemed wonderful; kind and intelligent and insanely lively and Lar, for all his bravado, was a bit scared that his loose grasp of Earthen culture would be off putting.
He was so much more charismatic when he could just speak Kryptonian.
He waved at Barry as soon as he saw him enter, happy that they had arrived at roughly the same time. “Hello, Barry Allen!” He greeted, his grin wide, “My-er, Kara has said so much about you. I am truly honored to meet you.”

“No, you– you couldn’t really see the stars like this on Krypton. We had telescopes, but..” She looked up at the sky. Kara wasn’t sure if she could handle the thought of Krypton. How the spires stretched so far into the sky they nearly disappeared, how it sounded when the wind blew through the crystals. She could remember the Jewel Mountains, and her first ceremony at the Fire Falls. Everything was so bright in so many ways, whether it be the red light of Rao off the jewels, the lights of buildings and pods blotting out the atmosphere, or the warm radiance of the fire as it spilled off the cliff.
The Sahara wasn’t Krypton. It was the wind blow sand across the soles of her shoes and lit only by the patchwork of pinpricks of light in the sky. It was beautiful in its own way, of course. Kara picked it because–
“If you look, there…” She pointed to a space between brighter stars, where a small dot of light could be seen. It looked almost reminiscent of what the humans called Beetlejuice, a faint orange-red tint to it. “There’s Rao.”
She could’ve picked the Fortress of Solitude, she knew Kal would have let her. It’s landscape was so much like home, with all the pieces assembled in one place. She could’ve picked Sanctuary, for there she wouldn’t even have to ask. There were her memories, bathed in red that was constantly shifting with the waters around it. What she’d stolen from Kal was gathered there, it was the Krypton she’d created. She could’ve made this look like home, but she didn’t want to.
She wanted to be able to see Rao’s light herself. To know that somehow, despite time and distance and devastation, his gladsome rays could still shine down upon them.
Tumblr media
She looked back down to Lar. He’d bowed when he landed in front of her. He spoke her language in kind, and shared memories of the same star. He’d shown time and again that he understood what culture and the loss of it meant, how hard it could be to both respect and uphold it, while also trying to find their place in a world that was so entirely different. He’d been respectful of her beliefs, even as she’d thrown them back in his face, angry and unseeing. The Sahara wasn’t Krypton, and neither was Lar.
But Kara found she loved him, anyway. She loved him even if traditions told her not to, she loved him even if her father would scoff. She loved him even while she struggled to come to terms with letting go of the pieces of Krypton she had left. She loved him.
Because he bowed, and he smiled, and she knew he loved her, too.
She pulled in a breath, and straightened her shoulders. This wasn’t about letting go of Krypton, or its traditions. It was about acknowledging where those traditions had been wrong, and molding them around something new, something better. Something that would let the both of them love without letting go of what was important to them.
“I’m sorry for the formality, but…” She tried for professional, for the same type of formal presentation that would have taken place on Krypton, but she found the corners of her lips pulling up in a smile. If only for a moment. She pulled the formal proposal from behind her back, and the last time those papers had been laid between them, she shoved them right back at him. Her voice shook when she continued.
“Lar Gand of Daxam, I would like to propose a formal courting between the House of El and the House of Gand.” She held the packet out. In it, her own drawings had been added. Lar in Cincinnati with his head tipped back in laughter, or with his head bowed over a book of poetry. Her own poems that reminded her of him, words written in the blank spaces between. At the end were all the signatures Lar had gathered, but an additional page was added reflecting Lar’s family, with Brainy’s own signature at the end.
“We have…we still have so much to work through, so much to talk about. And I know that. I know we’re not ready for the Fire Falls. But, Lar–” She shifted and slid just the smallest bit closer, “I love you. I love the person you are, I love your poems, I love laughing with you. I want to be with you. I want to promise to be with you.”
With that, she pulled out the bracelets she’d found in the bathroom ceiling. Lar had done an amazing job with them, the colors perfect. Kara had added one more gold thread, something of her own, signifying the work they’d both put in. “If, if you’ll have me.”
“Nothing like this.” He finished for her, his nod one of understanding as he followed her gaze up toward the sky. The swirl of stars a blanket above them. He squinted, rocking onto his toes briefly as if the small movement would help him see any better and then, like magic, the sky went from a blanket to a patchwork quilt, each star so easily distinguishable from the others that his lips shifted into an amazed smile at the sight of it. Rao was so easy to see then, so clearly their sun that it was a wonder he had never spotted it before now. The light he saw now must have been older than all of them, so old that his line had not yet split from the house of Am when it first burned and began its journey all the way to shine on both of them, however faintly, now.
Time was such a farce; distance such a tragedy.
“Wow,” he breathed, weightless with it, “What a beautiful night.” His voice held the kind of conviction that only she could really bring out in him and he looked at her, smiling, his heart aching sweetly at the sight of her profile. He wondered if that would ever stop, but he had a feeling, deep within him, that it wouldn’t.
He shifted. She seemed so lost in thought so often and now was no exception. A wanderer, his father would call her. There was something admirable in that, he thought, maybe how much it took to continue to wander, how much of a siren call home had for so many, especially those who had no home to return to. But he was a bit biased when it came to Kara Zor-El, and unafraid to admit as much. It felt a bit impossible to not find yourself instantly charmed into her convictions, but at least he could take comfort in knowing he was not the only one who felt as such.
His head wavered and then tilted in unabashed confusion as he stared down at the familiar enough proposal, its gilded gold boarders shining even under the moonlight. He glanced up at her, earnest and nervous, and then back down toward the packet, unassuming and shaking in her hand, and back again on a loop as she continued, his mind stuck on its own loop of ‘I would like to propose a formal courting I would like to propose a formal courting Iwouldliketoproposeaformalcourting.’
He took the packet, his own hands shaking as he flipped through it slowly, his own sketches and musings giving way to her familiar handwriting, her graphite fingerprint smudged on the corner of a drawing of him, Brainy’s signature, the one they signed onto official documentation for things like treaties, the kind they actually cared about.
He closed the packet carefully, smoothing his hand over the cover page with a reverence that would have been embarrassing if he wasn’t still numb with shock and looked up to find her closer. Hopeful.
And he laughed. Bright and cheerful and wholly inappropriate for how much effort she had put in, how seriously she was taking this.
His hand landed on her wrist, pulling her into his chest even as it still heaved with untamed giggles. “I adore you, Kara Zor-El. Did you know that?” He asked, puling back enough to smile down at her and take the bracelets from her grasp with a shake of his head.
“I have loved you and I will love you,” he said simply, “And I have chosen you and I will choose you, always.” That was that, wasn’t it? What else was there to say? What else would encompass the bubbling expanse held within his ribcage?
“Here!” He said, finally, his smile cracking into a giddy laugh as he rushed to fit the bracelet onto her wrist. “I-Kara, this feels like one of those times where kissing would be appropriate.” He laughed.

The Sahara was vast. Sometimes it seemed as endless as the ocean. In a way it reminded him of Daxam, with its own vast deserts, the dark blue hues the sand made as it shifted, ever shifting, ever changing. They had a saying about that, even, not that Lar even remembered the exact saying. Something about change and its inevitability. It felt apt now though, the truth behind it anyway, as he watched golden sands dance in the sweltering winds. He felt properly terrified at the prospect of flying toward the only heartbeat close enough for him to hear. Not that it would have mattered if they were in the middle of Time’s Square, for as well as he knew its idiosyncrasies. There was a nervous energy in the air, crackling and uncomfortable and, again, terrifying, as he floated just far enough to still turn around and decide that this, whatever this was, could wait just one more day. There was so much that had been lost, so much he could stand to lose. He took a breath and wondered if somewhere out there on a ship or on a new, forsaken planet the remaining Daxamites would remember the saying in its entirety.
The formality was a little funny, actually, and he struggled not to let his lips curl into a fond lopsided smile as he landed, the simple sight of her with her unsure footing and darting, courageous eyes enough that he relaxed if only so that he could reach out to reassure her that this wasn’t scary and not be a liar. “Hello, Kara Zor-El.” He said instead, his hands tangling together behind his back as he bowed properly. “Of course. You asked.” He grinned privately to himself. As if she could call on him and he not come. The thought was, well, not silly, misguided maybe, or maybe he was just bold. His mother told him often to use his words and mean them, though he found that it was possible she had just created an outlier, in that way if no other.
“The milky way looks beautiful here. This planet is lucky.” He said, not bold enough to let the moment pass without a fight, “You must have never gotten a view of our galaxy like this from Kandor.” He shook his head. He had never even gotten a view like this from the outskirts on Daxam and the light pollution there was nothing compared to the cities. “I remember the lights of the floating city being blinding when I was on Krypton. I imagine your city must have been much the same, no?”

It was Kara’s turn to feel her heart beating out of her chest. It was her turn to shift on her feet, barely touching the sand below her. Surely she didn’t even have to give Lar coordinates; he’d be able to hear the sheer nervous energy of her.
It could be any other. She could let it be any other night. They could read poetry with the blanket of stars spread above them, and pretend there weren’t bracelets in her pockets. Kara could keep pretending there wasn’t something there until the stars themselves ran out, but she didn’t want to. Because there was Lar with his hands on the sides of her face and a gentle smile on his own. With his lips pressed against her forehead and the familiar cadence of Kryptonian on his tongue. With his bravery and his kindness and his love for life despite all that was thrown at him.
She could pretend, but then there was Lar.
“Hello, Lar Gand.” She started before he could fully settle in front of her. She’d picked the Sahara for the wide swath of stars displayed proudly overhead, for how calm and how quiet it could be. But standing there, she really just felt open. Exposed. Her heart a loud drumbeat against still desert sand. Raw and still unworthy for a man who’d offered such forgiveness. “I’m glad you came.”

❝ awww, you’re blushing. ❞ @daisyquakes
“I am not.” He protested, even as he could feel the heat emanating from his cheeks and down his neck. He snatched it out of her hands in the blink of an eye, zooming to grab the damn book of poetry from where he had left it, carelessly, on the counter and zooming back to his spot with enough time to watch her hair fall back into place before turning it over in his hands as he willed his blush to settle and his cheeks to return to their normal coloring. When he had brought Daisy to the Legion house he thought it would help her decide it it was the right place for her, as well as an opportunity to simply spend time with someone he considered a friend. He supposed he should have expected a little teasing when he had been absent-minded enough to leave his things out and about. Brainy was usually too caught up in their own head to notice his things strewn about the kitchen, much less the insignificant scribbles he wrote in his books, but Daisy, apparently, was not.
“I don’t blush. That would be unbecoming of a Daxamite. I’m simply,” he paused, his head tilting from side to side with an unconvincing wince, “regulating my body temperature through my cheeks. It’s entirely voluntary and has nothing to do with anything else at all.”

yeah, well. you suck. // @twentyninetynines
Lar could’ve laughed, he almost did, but with a hoard of nameless goons running after the pair and a particularly mad, mountain of a man wearing what appeared to me a luchador mask quickly gaining on them, the Daxamite felt as though laugher would be less than appropriate between the two of them.
“That’s one way to say thank you,” Lar shot back, his eyebrow rising as he looped his flight around the other hero. He hadn’t worked with many others, at least in this century. The team had gotten a bit bloated back in the 31st century, if he was being honest, but this, this was nice. Brainy was perfectly capable but there was something a bit exciting about matching another person punch for punch. He glanced over at the man, his mouth slipping into a wide oh before snapping closed. “You’re the Spider-man Brainy has told me about, are you not?” He asked,  “He is quite convinced you would make a fine addition to the Legion.”

Oh Lar, she thought with a smile and a sigh at his antics. It didn’t take a 12th level intellect to know that Lar was still absolutely smitten with the one and only Kara Danvers. (And really who could blame the man? Kara was one of a kind in the universe.) Donna wanted to laugh at the thought of Kara actually noticing another man’s advances though. It had taken her long enough to recognize Lar’s interest and that had come with a thesis length document attached to it.
“You know, jealousy is a perfectly normal emotion.” Donna would know. She couldn’t help but look sometimes even at Lar and Kara and be jealous that they had found their match in each other – even if they were far from accepting that they were fated for one another. “Jealousy is only a problem with how one acts upon it.”
Tumblr media
Lar shook his head. Donna didn’t understand, he barely understood, but his mother’s words ran though his head on loop the same way they had since this entire issue had arose. Stories of how possessive his father had been when her family had denied their bonding, how aggressive the usually passive man had become while they were separated until their bonding was complete. It had been normal, a Daxamite thing, one of the few differences they had on a biological level to the Kryptonians only a few planets away. The Kryptonians had considered it uncivilized at the time, of course, or so Lar had heard amongst the whispers of the few diplomats who visited Krypton once a cycle to keep the tenuous peace between the two planets. Now he was inclined to agree with them. It felt blinding, almost, like he couldn’t control the single minded focus he had on his... no, he shook himself from his thoughts. Kara wasn’t his.
Rao, what was wrong with him?
It was a reason why their bondings moved so quickly on Daxam. Male Daxamites had a tendency to become... different in situations like these. Lar had never thought that he would meet someone like Kara, much less that he would ever fall in love so the idea that such a thing would happen to him had been absolutely laughable only two cycles ago. Now, it seemed, his body was betraying him. He never thought he would hate being a Daxamite, he held so much pride in his people, but there was a first time for everything.
“I can’t not act on it, Donna. Believe me I’ve tried. I feel like I’m about two flyby’s past The Planet away from being a stalker.” he whined, “It’s a Daxamite thing, we’re- we were almost always in the middle of a birth rate crisis on Daxam. Our population wasn’t nearly as stable as Krypton’s given how frequently we were at war. Bondings happened quickly and, given our ability to, uh, copulate, with multiple species it was in Daxam’s best interest to make it a biological imperative to stay monogamous. Over time the matrix nullified any sex drive we would have and replaced it with, well, this.” He ran a hand over his face, trying his best to hide his deep red blush. “When I’m with her I feel normal but anytime we’re apart I feel like I’m going absolutely insane. Even Brainy isn’t sure what I should do.”

Lar pouted, his eyebrows pulling together as he stared at the frozen meals section of the shop. It wasn’t his responsibility to buy groceries, or at least it hadn’t been back (or forward? Time was confusing) when the Legion was more than him and a Coluan who felt more than satisfied sunbathing in the mornings.  He supposed that it made sense that he had to buy his own food now, or rather, that Maxwell Lord bought his food.
“Just making conversation is all.” He blinked twice, his eyes wide at he turned to the man before his attention was once again drawn to the line of frozen pizzas. “I only believe in the Kryptonian pantheon, unfortunately, so I’m not concerned about what sort of god you are. I just want chicken nuggets.” He muttered, glancing back over at Loki. “You wouldn’t happen to know where those are, would you?”
Tumblr media
i cannot believe we’re out of food. – @cfvalors
Yes, one day Loki hoped to be the being whom mortals would turn to when they were in need of assistance…but this was taking things a little too far. Complaining to him about a lack of food was hardly something which fell under his purview. He stared at the man incredulously for a moment, in disbelief that he would actually bother him with something so unimportant. “And that is my concern why? Are you incapable of replenishing your supplies? While I do seek to be a benevolent god, retrieving food for people who have no difficulty in doing so themselves is not something I will agree to do.” Folding his arms, he declared, “Find some yourself, fool.”

“Well that’s unfortunate because it’s also what people who aren’t jealous at all say when people accuse them of being jealous. Me, jealous. Ridiculous.” Lar huffed, his arms crossing over his chest as he turned to look out the window petulantly. He had missed Donna immensely, for a multitude of reasons, but he had not missed this. “I would have no right to be jealous, even if I was, which I am not,” He continued to defend, “as I am not Kara’s match, hence, what she does, and who she entertains should, and does, mean as much to me as it does to you. Would it not be strange if you were jealous over a man who obviously does not understand the concept of professional conduct in the workplace?”
He sighed, huffing a laugh. “Besides, Kara is more than capable of handling herself. If at any point she no longer wished to welcome the attention she could put a stop to it and I have no doubt that she would, indeed, have no trouble putting said stop to it.”
Tumblr media
i’m not jealous. || @cfvalors
“You know that’s exactly what jealous people say,” Donna said, pointing a teasing yet slightly accusatory finger in Lar’s direction. She’d missed this – time spent with the two of them where smiles were easy to come by. “So tell me exactly why you’re not jealous, hm?”

are you sure you don’t want a beer? @daisyquakes
“No, that’s okay.” It was so much easier to communicate now that he could actually speak English again. He appreciated his friend’s attempts at deciphering his emojis but this was just so much more efficient. “It doesn’t really do anything for me? Or, rather, it doesn’t do anything for me other than make me sad that you subject yourself to drinking something that tastes the way beer does. It’s a little sad.” He hummed, taking a sip of his soda. A sprite, which had quickly become his favorite thing to drink on Earth.
“You know on Daxam we drank something more akin to,” he thought for a moment, “um, mead? I suppose that would be the closest thing. It was like a honeyed wine that had a very low alcohol content. We would drink it all the time. I miss it. I haven’t seen anything like it in, Rao, years and years. They didn’t even have it on Krypton. It was a very Daxamite thing.” He laughed.

He felt... empty. Empty the way he did when he watched from a pod as his planet was pummeled with broken debris that was the remnants of Krypton, empty the way he felt watching, frozen as he was but fully aware as decades turned into centuries turned into millennia stuck in the phantom zone with his only companions being those abandoned by the Kryptonians to rot eternally. Empty the way he had been when he was left alone in the Legion’s ship, his fear and anger slipping from him until nothing was left to be angry or scared about.
Staring up at the ceiling of his room felt a lot like that. The news played on his television, streaks of red and blue and green and yellow passed by the screen, fires glowed, people screamed, people died, and Lar felt nothing. Something was wrong with him, or maybe he had just finally broken. He could feel Brainiac’s eyes on him. They were concerned, he could feel it in the way they tapped anxiously at their thigh as they passed and hesitated before walking away only to make another trip outside his room, and another, and another, and another. He turned, finally, catching their eye and feeling, for the first time since they had met, nothing when he saw them. He focused on their face, their large eyes and the downturn of the mouth. A day ago he was sure he would have been filled with affection, overwhelmed with affection for the being they had come to see as their sibling, as their best friend, but now he only wanted them to leave, not out of annoyance, but because it would be easier than trying to explain the hole he felt was growing in the essence of his being minute by minute.
