CPU releases incentives to stewards of CPU-CPBC Chicken Dispersal Project.
Pastor Malicia receives a native chicken as his prize from Dean Dr. James Cabarles.
As a reward for their hard work and productivity, Central Philippine University gave out Seventy-Five Thousand Pesos worth of native chicken and feeds to the two (2) most successful stewards of CPU-CPBC Chicken Dispersal Project namely Pastor Mirvin Cañete and Pastor Elizardo Malicia. They received their respective prizes from CPU on January 2, 2022.
With the goal of helping the Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches (CPBC), Inc. pastors with their livelihood projects; augmenting their meager income; and providing livelihood projects for their church members, Chicken Dispersal Project is a partnership between CPU and CPBC that started last December 2020 with 15 pastors receiving eight (8) chickens and two (2) roosters each. In this project, according to CPBC General Secretary Rev. Dr. Jerson B. Narciso, “the recipient who can produce more out of what they had received will be privileged to get incentives (additional chicken and feeds) from CPU.”
After a year from its implementation, Pastors Cañete and Malicia have the highest number of chickens. They had even given extra heads to their fellow pastors to raise it independently. Hence, the 60 heads of breeder stocks were given to the winners. It was added with six sacks of CPU Feeds. The remaining awards in the form of CPU Feeds will be given staggered. It is to ensure that the requirement of native chicken breeders for supplemental rations will be enough until they start to lay eggs.
The CPU-CPBC Chicken Dispersal Project is a continuing project for CPBC pastors and churches. The convention hopes that through this livelihood project, “we would be able to assist our pastors with their economic needs.”
Native chicken, as the specific subject of this project, “is easy to take care of compared to other farm animals. The production is faster due to the monthly production of eggs and chicks. The source of income can be eggs, chicks, and marketable chickens,” said Dr. Jaime C. Cabarles, Jr., CPU College of Agriculture, Resources, and Environmental Sciences.
Meanwhile, on a Facebook post, Rev. Dr. Narciso expressed his gratitude to University President Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, and Dean Cabarles for supporting this endeavor.
CPU, through Rev. Francis Neil G. Jalando–on, author of Core Values of Central Philippine University, defines stewardship as “the proper and responsible management of life, position, possession, and other resources entrusted by God to man. This includes service, accountability, culture, and outreach.” Thus, CPU will continue to uphold projects such as this by recognition and aid.

CPU employees receive Christmas gift packs.
University employees received their gifts from the university.
The University employees were informed through Memo No. 112 that the University is giving out gift packs from December 14 to 17, 2021. Aside from the gifts from the University, gift packs from the former Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Alfonso A. Uy were also given out.
On the first day of the distribution, the CPU RAFLU-FFW (staff employees union) led by its President Victoria G. Bellosilio also held its gift-giving activity. The distribution was held at the CPU Grandstand from 10 AM to 12NN and from 1 PM to 4 PM. The employees received not one but three gift packs each. Apart from the gift-giving, there was a raffle draw for rice (25-kilo pack each).
Gift-giving is a value we have grown with. It is a reconfirmation of our relationship with one another. Generally, it is a conscious alternative to share our love with others through gifts.
One human side of it reveals that we need to appreciate people who are serving, loving, or helping us – one way or the other; and show them that we care. We also need to think about the needs of others. Above all else, love for one another. The family is foremost among recipients of our Christmas gifts.
We would like to thank our University President Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, former Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Alfonso A. Uy, the Vice Presidents, Unit Heads, and organizers for your donations and support.
Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year! May God Bless You!

The Martyr’s Antiphony by Dr. Francis Howard Rose.
Rev. Dr. Francis Howard Rose was the epitome of the Central Spirit.
In June 1945, for the first time, the story of the Hopevale Martyrdom was published through a booklet entitled “Through Shining Archway.” This 55-page booklet was edited by Dr. Jesse Wilson and was sold at 25 cents by the Roger Williams Press, 3734 Payne Ave., Cleveland 14, Ohio. This memorial booklet included the biographies of each 11 missionaries and one child.
Because of the inspiration brought about by the stories of the Hopevale Martyrs who were captured on December 19, 1943, and were executed the next day, a lot of people began to research about their life and ministry. In 1946, the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society, New York, published the poem of Dr. Francis Howard Rose. This was written in 1931 and one can see the commitment and passion of Dr. Rose in the mission work. When he wrote it, he probably had no inkling that he would become a martyr. But in every line in this poem, you can read the readiness to become a martyr.
According to the Council on Finance and Promotion of the Northern Baptist Convention for the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society and Woman’s American Baptist Foreign Mission Society, “the words of the Martyr’s Antiphony have been adapted by Mrs. H. Hurley Baird to be sung to the Schumann music used for “Lord, Speak To Me” (Canonbury L.M.). Mrs. Baird of Newark, New Jersey, is a member of the Board of Managers of the Woman’s American Baptist Foreign Mission Society. The adaptation uses four of the original eight stanzas and is now a hymn rather than an echo response. It is hoped that this martyr/s hymn will be widely used in conferences, house parties, and church services.”
Here is the poem that was written by Dr. Rose in its entirety:
THE MARTYR’S ANTIPHONY Christ Died For Us – We Die For Christ By Rev. Dr. Francis Howard Rose
All human progress up to God Has stained the stairs of time with blood; For every gain for Christendom, Is bought by someone’ martyrdom, Not ours alone, Nor man’s alone.
In furnace fire, a faithful three, Though bound in chains, in spirit free And walked with them through livid heat. A king’s defeat! A king’s defeat!
On seething sea, in darkest night, The ship-wrecked saw a Walking Light Defying wave and wind and deep, He put the wind and wave to sleep. Ah! He will keep! Ah! He will keep!
With tend’rest touch He heals our ills, And from His well of life He fills With living water, strength divine, Each thirsting branch of this His vine; For He is mine, And He is mine.
For us He poured the crimson cup, And bade us take and drink it up. Himself He poured to set us free. Help us, O Christ, though few we be, To drink with Thee: To drink life’s cup with Thee.
Nor did He yet forget to pray While midnight drifted toward the day. Then from prayer with spirit power To meet His zero hour: His zero hour.
Ten thousand saints come thronging home, From lion’s den and catacomb; The fire and sword and beasts defied; For Christ, their king, they testified And gladly died: They gladly died.
With eye of faith we see today That cross-led column wind its way Up life’s repeated calvary. Borne up by super-human powers, We rise to take the hill with ours, O Christ, we follow Thee! We follow Thee!

CPU, CPBC celebrates the 78th Hopevale Memorial.
The group had a pit stop at Banate Baptist Church before going to Camp Higher Ground.
On December 20, 2021, Central Philippine University and the Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches co-hosted the 78th memorial celebration of the Hopevale Martyrdom at Camp Higher Ground, Barotac Viejo.
As part of the celebration, 32 bikers, who are mostly Centralians and members of churches of the Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches, biked from the campus of Central Philippine University to Camp Higher Ground. The group passed by Dumangas Baptist Church where they were treated by a breakfast of native delicacies and welcomed by the church officers. The next pit stop was Banate Baptist Church where once again they were given some pizza and buko juice. The bikers arrived by 10:30 am after more than 70 kilometers of biking.
During the Worship Service, the assembled group remembered what happened 78 years ago on December 20, 1943. 11 American Baptist missionaries and one boy were martyred in the hills of Tapaz, Capiz. They were beheaded and burned by the Japanese soldiers who captured them a day before. They were most probably preparing for their Christmas celebration as this could have been their second Christmas since they evacuated in 1942. But they were not able to celebrate Christmas that year.

Joan Cataluña Sabran Castor: A Board Passer’s story of success.
Centralian Joan Cataluña Sabran Castor: September 2021 LET Board Passer.
Due to some difficult circumstances, Joan Cataluña Sabran became a self-supporting student since her elementary up to college. She struggled and did her best to become successful. She eventually realized her dream and passed the September 2021 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET).
The following, as told by Joan, is a true story of sacrifice, perseverance, and determination to succeed; a reality that many work students of today with the same situations and experiences may follow.
Joan came from a fragmented family and was not living with her biological parents when she was still a baby. She was adopted by her aunt and uncle that’s why her last name became Sabran. Later on, with her marriage, her family name became Castor. She grew up with her Lola (grandmother) who took care of her and helped her to study in a public elementary school.
“I worked in the farm to help Lola in harvesting rice. She recalled in Ilonggo, “Pang garab lang humay (rice stalks), amon pangitan-an ni Lola sang una, para makakaon.” (That was our only source of income so that we can eat). Joan started as a working student since grade 5. I served other people at their homes – working as a kabulig (helper) to be able to buy my needs in school projects and daily allowance.” “I graduated from the Mambiranan Elementary School in Calinog, Iloilo.”
“I pursued my secondary education, again, by being a working student at Leganes National High School. I graduated With Honors and was the Model Girl of the Year Awardee,” she recalled.
Joan is thankful to Central Philippine University for the opportunity to study in college through its Work-Study program. She was qualified and became a dedicated work student. She graduated from CPU in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Health Fitness and Lifestyle Management degree – under the College of Medicine. She was a recipient of the God’s Grace Program since her first year in college and was awarded as an OUTSTANDING WORK STUDENT during the college honors and awards in the same year.
During her time in college, she recalls, “I was a working student assigned to the Weston Hall Ladies Dormitory and Dining Hall under the Services Laboratory Assistance Group. I was reassigned to the Janitorial Student Assistance Office so that I can balance my work and the On-the-Job Training requirement during my 4th year.”
She added that “Since there was no financial support for me at that time, I volunteered my services to the tenants at the Weston Hall dormitory. I washed their clothes, do errands for them; I served coffee, and snacks during my vacant periods. Life was difficult or so I thought, but my optimism and belief in God encouraged me to work hard even more.”
“As a challenge, I ran for a position of a Board Member in the College of Medicine as part of the Reform Party in the CPUR elections, and I won!”, she said.
Joan was hired as a Secretary of the Office of the University President on a job order basis from July 1 to December 15, 2017, and on probation from December 16, 2017 until June 16, 2018. She later became a regular CPU employee after some time. “Thank you so much to University President Dr. Teodoro C. Robles for the job,” she said.
Joan was appointed Logistics Coordinator under the CPU Project ETC in June 2019 until this time. Joan also enrolled in the Diploma in Teaching program of the University (2018-2019).
“I was scheduled to take the Licensure Examination for Teachers in March 2020 but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Finally, I took the exam on September 26, 2021 as scheduled.” Joan passed the LET Board Exam.
“It was a roller coaster ride before that since I stopped reviewing for the LET last year March 2020 upon knowing the postponement. I was almost losing hope for the LET exam to finally push through.” She added, “I stopped my review and did not open my notes anymore until August this year. Last June 2021, I was hospitalized, and I thought I won’t survive.” Her blood pressure was at (50/0). “This is my second life now. I had to realize the purpose of this God-given life,” Joan reflected.
“I prayed hard as I was about to take the exam. I asked God to give me wisdom so I can make it to the list of the LET board passers. God sustained me. I passed the Exam! Praise the Lord! God is always there despite the challenges in my life. I was strengthened by those challenges.” “I would always remember our work student motto, “Labor is Honor”, Joan added. She shared a favorite verse from Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Joan was recently married to Mr. Rene Castor Jr.
