in case anyone out there is interested, the method in question is:
buy one (or two!) of the fancy "1 inch foam" ddr mats
buy a section of 1" eva high density garage mat/exercise mat puzzle foam blocks (the one i got was 6' x 4' and i could cut both mats out of the one)
cut out shape of the foam the mats came with
discard the shitty ones and replace with high impact foam that supports ur shitty 30yo joints but doesn't keep the mat from registering your foot impacts at high speed play!
disclaimer that this is both high cost AND high effort so you do. have to be pretty dedicated to the idea of dance dance revolution

kind of validated in this behavior in that. it wasn't bad! now it IS bad (half my arm itches so bad i wanna rip it off and the rash looks like when my tattoo was hellishly infected) enough i wanna cry abt it but i am. stymied about what one does about this. get out of the house to go to urgent care by myself? false
