this is happening at my college right now. i’m in my third year here and everyone i know is like, haha, im in danger.
one of my professors earlier today had the perfect word to describe the feeling of it: traumatizing
what they’re doing seems almost illegal, like.. considering desantis brought in the majority of the trustees in one sweep, we didnt even have a chance to dissent their new supermajority firing president okker with no cause. or if it isn’t, it should be illegal, there’s literally no checks and balances happening here. no democracy involved. genuine fascism at work, it’s actually absurd. extremely fucking filthy and despicable political ploy.
yesterday wrt the board of trustees meeting, a student commented, “The fact they are playing [the college president] like she's a game and she is sitting at that table CRYING is something that shakes me.”
this is who they replaced our president with
they don’t care about education or the students at all. they don’t care. we’re chess pieces to them.

Three days ago, New College of Florida administration terminated the associate dean of academic engagement and information librarian, Helene Gold. She has been with the school for five years, through the start of Covid and through restructuring. She provided precious support for students in their final weeks of class. Many students who planned to work with her are now left hanging, nearing the end of a semester during which they were forced to watch their school be torn apart bit-by-bit. Gold even had a class she was scheduled to finish teaching.
Administration has further cemented not just the disregard they have for the people who keep the institution running, but for the students as well.
Gold was fired because of her identity and because admin knew that she disapproves of them.
According to a 2019 Catalyst article, Gold loves New College. She had wanted to work there for years, and that shows in how long she stayed. And yet, she was forced out with an hour’s notice because of people who likely first heard of New College less than a year ago.

After dissolving the Office of Outreach and Inclusive Excellence and quietly firing the Dean of Diversity Yoleidy Rosario-Hernandez, the NCF Board of Trustees’ next major move was to deny tenure to the five faculty who had applied, having each reached the end of the tenure track.
In doing this, they undermined the five years of hard work that each faculty member dedicated, and their willingness to devote them selves to a low-paying, difficult job. Untenured faculty have been one of the most at risk parties since the DeSantis’ first new appointees arrived, and so those rejected on April 26th are left with insecure positions. Two of the faculty are a part of the chemistry AOC, which was already in a shaky position. Other AOCs rely on chemistry, and yet it is unclear how the required courses will be taught next year.
BOT members claim to work in the interest of the institution, and yet they threaten its foundations, because they are here only to control higher education.
