I think it’s so interesting and fun how Cas’ choice of aliases inform so much of his fandom characterization. Like the fact that he listens to “pop girls” or just Pop music is referenced so frequently in art and fics. And that’s bc it’s fun!! That’s a fun part of his personality! And I love that! I love it so much! But sometimes I wonder why the fandom characterization of that leans so heavy towards white Pop artists like Taylor Swift and “teen pop girls”.
Bc In Canon, Cas gives himself the aliases Agent Beyonce, Agent Solange, and Agent Lizzo. All three of those (Black!) women could be considered Pop/R&B , Pop/Soul , Pop/Funk artists even. Based on that, I would assume that Cas enjoyed those genres and would probably listen to more prominent artists within those Genres.
So it’s interesting to me that the fandom interpretation of Cas’ music preferences frequently drops the R&B, Soul, and Funk aspect of it and waters it down to “oh yeah Cas just likes basic Pop Girl Music!” and then follows that rabbit hole down a playlist of predominantly white Pop women.
Because honestly, no! That’s erasing a giant aspect of it. They are not just Pop Girls- The R&B, Soul, and Funk are an important part of their art and who they are as artists, especially as Black women! That’s history and community. A history and community Cas is obviously a fan of! So to repeatedly ignore that aspect? It’s completely erasing the Blackness of it all!
Like it’s honestly crazy to me that Cas called himself Agent Beyoncé -again AGENT BEYONCÉ- confirming himself as a Beyoncé stan!! but for some reason the artist he is most frequently associated with is ... Taylor Swift??? Like this isn’t even anything against Taylor but how has she become Fanon Cas’ favorite artist over BEYONCE? A woman he canonically named himself after?? The original Pop Girl that let y’all know Cas listened to Pop girls???
