Character Applications
The CTF application process is 2 steps, and involves completing your Profile and posting a Census thread.
Profile
These are split into two (2) sections: the first has basic fields about your character (name, age, location, etc.) and the second is a freeform application.
Freeforms can be formatted however you'd like, and are intended to give us a sense of who your character is. They are a minimum of 300 words.
Census
This is a thread with overviews of all of your characters in it. This 'overview' is basically a shipper, and can include a character summary, plothooks, etc. No minimum word count.
Graphics
You will need 4 graphics for each character.
Post Avatars are 220 (width) x 450 (height). This is what will show in a thread beside your post.
Profile Images are 650 (width) x 1000 (height). This is what will show in your profile (when someone clicks your name).
Profile Icons are 200 (width) x 200 (height). This is what will show on the site's homepage.
Census Images are 150 (width) x 200 (height). This is what will show next to your census/shipper info.
As long as your ratios are right, images will resize.

SITE TIMELINE
It's time for a sneak peek at CTF's site timeline! Below are all of the major events that may have impacted your characters over the last 12 years.
FEBRUARY 2023
In the early morning hours, the power goes out in Chicago. With limited ability to communicate the panic is slow to build, as most assume the blackout is a local issue that will be resolved shortly.
MARCH, 2023
A series of storms and natural disasters begin to occur worldwide. It is now clear that something larger has occurred— something that no one may be able to fix. Chicago sees a sudden and early heatwave like never before.
APRIL, 2023
A small group bands together to form a settlement in the open land where the suburb of Crete, Illinois used to exist. The Garden, as it is named, leans heavily on community participation and respect for nature. As The Garden grows, it is rumored in the greater Chicago area to be a utopia in an otherwise harsh landscape.
JANUARY, 2026
Supplies begin to dwindle in the greater Chicago area. Looking to pool and protect resources, another settlement called Fort Armour forms on the south side of Chicago. It’s led by a military commander who rules with an iron fist, and is heavily armed.
OCTOBER, 2028
Harsh weather patterns and diminishing resources continue to plague survivors, resulting in a stark increase in crime and violence. Those survivors who don’t live in a settlement, (commonly referred to as Wastelanders), frequently attempt to steal resources from established settlements.
DECEMBER, 2030
A harsh cold spell spurs a wave of sickness, and the population numbers dwindle. In a desperate attempt to find a method to communicate with established settlements and trade medications and other necessary resources, a third settlement called Wrigley Post is formed in the heart of downtown Chicago.
SEPTEMBER, 2031
Survivors in the Wrigley Post settlement succeed in finding a radio signal. They begin to put out calls to other settlements and Wastelanders, hoping to make contact. Unfortunately, they are met with static and silence.
FEBRUARY, 2032
Hearing rumors of the radio signal, the council members of The Garden manage to obtain their own working radio. They choose to hide this from the rest of the settlement, as its use is contrary to the settlement’s stated values. It’s only a matter of time before a few community members learn this secret, sparking tensions between those who are aware of the radio’s existence.
APRIL, 2035
Present day.

LORE DROP
We've dropped some new lore... our Member Groups!
After the Blackout (see more about that in our Timeline lore drop, coming soon 👀) things were bad. But, slowly, they got slightly better. People banded together and started to protect and care for one another again. Some settlements formed throughout the remains of Chicago...

Wastelanders
Wastelanders are those in the greater Chicago area who remain “unsettled”. They roam the unclaimed land in between the settlements, surviving however they can. There are no shared values or traits among the Wastelanders. Some travel alone, others in small groups of 3-5. Some want nothing to do with the settlements, while others are desperate to be taken in. It is unknown exactly how many Wastelanders exist, but the numbers continue to plummet in the wake of harsh living conditions.

Wrigley Post
TLDR: A smaller settlement with a strong leaning towards Democracy, Wrigley Post is located at the heart of downtown Chicago. They are focused on using a radio to communicate with others, and finding other methods of convincing Wastelanders and settlements to trade their resources.
Sawyer swore up and down he’d never join one of the settlements. He’d seen the lush greens peaking over the gates of The Garden, starving Wastelanders turned away at its laughably ornate gates. And he’d seen the lifeless bodies bleeding out in the dirt, littering the way to the impenetrable Fort Armour. Mankind’s corruption and greed lived on, even as the world burned around them – and he wanted no part of it.
Instead, he braved the harsh elements in the Wastelands, his young daughter by his side. Along their travels they met other Wastelanders, some of whom they learned to trust, albeit at a distance. It could be lonely, but it was enough to get by.
That was, until the Sickness caught up to them. He tried to protect them, but by the start of December 2030 his daughter was too weak to travel by foot, the way they’d always done. She faded fast, and Sawyer was desperate to save her – desperate to get his hands on the medicine the settlements were hoarding.
Sawyer and his allies from the Wastelands banded together in the heart of Chicago. Here they tended to their sick while attempting to safely contact the other settlements. Their home base was soon named Wrigley Post -- a humble settlement where residents would do their best to look after one another, not unlike a pre-apocalypse neighborhood.
It took some time, but by September 2031, Sawyer managed to get an old radio they found on their travels to work. Unfortunately, no one answered their pleas.
By 2035 Wrigley Post has grown to 70 residents. Sawyer is often begrudgingly thrust into a leadership position within the settlement, however it operates as a democracy where decisions are made as a group. With some residents still experiencing residual complications of the Sickness (Sawyer’s daughter included), the settlement is faced with the task of convincing Wastelanders and Settlements to openly trade their precious resources.
WRIGLEY POST'S CORE VALUES:
Democracy: Although some residents are viewed as leaders, all major decisions are made by group vote. Pro-Trade: Wrigley Post wants to communicate with other settlements and Wastelanders alike, in an attempt to build a safe method of trading between people.

Fort Armour
TLDR: A militaristic settlement with a strong leaning towards being a Dictatorship, led with an iron fist by The Commander and his circle of Lieutenants. Fort Armour is all about survival, by any means necessary.
After another long and brutal winter in 2026, several years post-Blackout, supplies were dwindling fast. A Wastelander known as Steele had already made a name for himself as a skilled looter over the years. Capitalizing on his reputation, he decided to form a settlement with the express purpose of increasing his manpower and hoarding more resources.
He named his settlement Fort Armour, the compound’s jagged fences piercing the frozen dirt in Chicago’s south side. Fort Armour had humble beginnings – but as the settlement successfully raided Wastelanders and other settlements alike, its ranks began to grow.
In 2035, Commander Steele leads his settlement of 100 with an iron fist, inspiring his subjects through fear and intimidation. He holds close an inner circle of 5 lieutenants, their families among the few who are treated with dignity in the settlement, in exchange for their unwavering loyalty. The settlement’s Militia is extensive and heavily armed, consisting of 40 soldiers whose sole job it is to protect the settlement and steal resources from outside its boundaries, by whatever means necessary.
The other residents are left to pick up jobs and tasks around the settlement in exchange for their rations. It’s a first-come-first-served, dog-eat-dog society.
Life is difficult for residents of Fort Armour, especially as they face blatant nepotism and resource inequality within their own settlement. However for many residents, life within the settlement’s confines is far superior to the lawlessness and danger of the Wastelands.
FORT ARMOUR'S CORE VALUES:
I before We: People tend to look out for themselves and their families first. There’s a lot of distrust within the settlement, especially given the obvious nepotism and inequality. Finders Keepers: Life isn’t about what’s fair anymore, it’s about doing what is needed to survive. Fort Armour fights for its resources, and fights harder to protect them from the grasps of Wastelanders and other settlements alike. Ends Justify Means: Violence and force aren’t looked down upon, but rather seen as necessary to navigate this new world.

The Garden
TLDR: A secular, utopian settlement with a strong leaning towards Communism, led by a Council of seven leaders. Everyone is given a role to play in furthering the community as a whole. Secretive and restrictive in the name of “the greater good”.
In April of 2023, a group of climate activists decided it was time to form a safe community in the face of the recent Blackout and natural disasters plaguing the planet. They made the trek from the heart of Chicago to Crete, Illinois – a suburb of the city boasting expansive farmland and room to grow. They named their settlement The Garden, an ode to the Garden of Eden.
Although The Garden’s population was once small, by 2035 it’s expanded to include 150 residents. The settlement is structured like a commune, wherein each resident holds a pivotal role in keeping the community functioning. At the head of the commune is The Council – a group of seven residents who make all major decisions for the settlement, including assigning each resident to their job at age sixteen.
RESIDENTS ARE ASSIGNED ONE OF THE FOLLOWING JOBS:
Enforcers: Carry out the law within the settlement and protect The Garden from other settlements and Wastelanders. They are assigned to a specific post (gate guard, external patrol, etc.), usually for life. Farmers: Responsible for tending to the expansive farmland, which produces food, medicine, and essential ingredients for many other goods used in the settlement. Makers: Create the necessary goods (such as clothing, soap, etc.) to keep The Garden functioning. Transporters: Deliver all supplies and goods to peoples’ homes and coordinate expeditions to bring in new supplies. Medics: Responsible for treating all physical ailments in the settlement, from minor to life-threatening. This is the smallest job group. Teachers: Some educate the residents who are under 16, while others specifically train residents for their assigned jobs once they reach age 16. Laborer: Build and maintain the infrastructure and essential systems in the settlement. This is the largest job group.
Adults are expected to work a shift of five days on, with two days off per week. Days off are staggered so that each job is tended to throughout the week with full coverage.
The structure of the settlement has yielded impressive results – The Garden has managed to sustain a small surplus of goods, meaning most of its residents are in good health and are protected from the dangers beyond the settlement’s gates. However, not all residents can turn a blind eye to the lack of freedom within The Garden’s confines.
Despite its insular nature, The Garden has gained a reputation as a utopia in a post-apocalyptic world – a reputation that may put its safety at risk. Perhaps this is why The Council has secretly obtained its own working radio, to listen for outside communications about their sacred oasis. As of 2035, only The Council and a select few others in The Garden know of the radio’s existence, though it’s unclear how long this secret can be kept.
THE GARDEN'S CORE VALUES:
No Waste: Strictly enforced, which is why all food is delivered directly to households daily, and other goods are delivered on a weekly basis. Any surplus is collected and redistributed or reused/recycled. Community above Person: The community is able to thrive only because everyone contributes in their daily work. There is no form of currency in the settlement, but instead people benefit from the contributions of others. Respect for Nature: The council looks down on the use of technology or attempts to return to the way society used to be, despite their secrecy surrounding the use of radio. They believe the current state of the world is an intentional “reset” by Nature itself. Privacy: The Garden Council keeps communications with other settlements minimal, and tries not to disclose much about how they operate with other settlements or Wastelanders. Citizens are forbidden from communicating with those outside The Garden.

PLOT
Early in the morning on February 16, 2023 the power went out. Everywhere, all around the globe, all at once. It’s been twelve years since that day, and the whole world has changed.
Nobody knows how or why the Blackout happened, but it’s completely changed everything and everyone. Soon after the Blackout came the extreme weather patterns, then the sickness, and then the waiting. Waiting for the other shoe to drop, for the power to come back on, for things to go back to normal.
We’re still waiting.
PREMISE
CARRY THE FIRE is a mature, post-apocalyptic roleplay set in the year 2035, based around the remains of what was once Chicago, Illinois. Humanity has been shattered, and the remaining survivors have been left to put the pieces back together again. They have come together to form settlements, bastions of hope in an otherwise bleak period of darkness. Some want to return to the way things were, and others have opted to take advantage of the chaos to rebuild the world in their image.
How have you changed, when forced to face this new world? What compromises do you make, when given the choice between feeding your family and starving? Who would you be, if given the opportunity to remake yourself, to start from scratch?
